Mary Janes & Squirrel Nut Zippers

Someone at work brought in a bunch of candy and among the items were Mary Janes and Squirrel Nut Zippers.

I haven't had either one of these in a long time and it was a nice surprise treat.  I think I like the peanutty Mary Janes a bit more than the molassas Zippers.

Squirrel Nut Zippers were one of my FAVORITE candies when I was a kid. I used to buy them from the concession stand at Warwick Pony League (baseball) in my hometown of Newport News (Va.). I seriously doubt that my teeth could hold up eating them nowadays!...

Ah.....the recipients of at least one of my fillings!  I did love...and still do both of them. For the rehearsal dinner of my sons wedding I got a whole bunch of "old-time candy"(including MJ)  and put baskets on every table.  Folks kept talking about it (and lining their pockets) all night.

Squirrel nut caramels were always a favorite of mine (much better than the zippers).   Haven't seen them in many years.

I must wave my flag yet again for Vermont Country Store. You can order a lot of great snacks and candies from them. I know I've seen Mary Janes and Squirrel Zippers on the site.

Vermont Country Store does offer a lot of unique and hard-to-find items, but face it, their prices are exorbitant. I've found that the best place to get nostalgic candies is at Old Time Candy. As an example of price difference, a 1.5 pound bag of Mary Janes is $12.95 at VCS.  At Old Time Candy two pounds will cost you $9.95.

Second Old Time as a good mail-order source - decent pricing and fresh product.  They are my source for Walnettos (second favorite only to Squirrel nut caramels, but they are no longer available) .  I get zippers & Mary Janes locally for about $4/lb.

Thanks for the info. I think I will continue to wave my flag but it's always good to know a second source. VCS has a lifetime guarantee on all their products which means a lot to me.

Fortunately Old Time candy has a 30-lb bag of Walnettos - a few weeks supply.
