When we're easting out, we notice more and more restaurants adding stuff to mashed potatoes:Cheese, garlic, sour cream etc.
When you make mashed potatoes, do you doctor them up a bit with add ins...or mix ins. I meam, I even when eating them on my plate like to blend in my corn niblets or peas into the potatoes..it's just tasty fun! But we've been adding lots of garlic and pepper lately...adds flavor!

    Sauteed/fried onions, with butter and cream. Like peas sometimes too.

      While makeing mashed potatoes years ago, I ran out of milk, and substituted sour cream, which husband doesn't like. We both loved the potatoes, and from then on I use sour cream AND milk, plus butter, of course. You can't taste the sour cream, but I think it tastes a little richer. If I have cream around, I will use that instead of milk. Mashed potatoes are an indulgence after all.

          A favorite of mine when I was a kid, was mashed potatoes with creamed tomatoes mixed in, like a gravy. Still love that but never do it because I never make creamed tomatoes, which Mom used to do frequently.

          I also love sourkraut mixed in with the mashed potatoes when we have pork and kraut.

            Sometimes we prepare them with roasted garlic. For "after market", I'm like Lee, if there are peas on the plate they're shoveled in with the spuds and gravy.

                I like roasted garlic and horseradish in my mashed! I always use real unsalted butter and cream heated up and added gently.

                    The #1 thing I add to mashed potatoes is some type of hot sauce-Tobasco, Franks, etc. Just a little bit will enhance the flavor of the potatoes. The I add cheese (from Califoria of course or maybe the Rogue Creamery in Central Point, Oregon) or vegis or whatever.

                      I only add one thing - I make an indention on top of potatoes and put butter in it. When it melts and I start eating I get little rivers of butter.

                          I had this in Newfoundland years ago and fell in love with it. Sometimes (depending on the rest of the meal) I make mustard mashed potatoes and they are terrifc. My rule of thumb is to add one tablespoon of whole grain or Dijon mustard for each pound of potatoes that you cook. Mash the potatoes with your butter, and then add milk (or cream) and the mustard.                                       Once was down South for Thanksgiving, where I watched the host dump a whole bottle of ranch dressing into the mashed potatoes! It was quite disturbing and I lost my appetite, but was informed it was quite common practice!

                                          Often times roasted garlic. Last night I added boursin (sp?) cheese..it was the pepper seasoned one. I usually use the garlic-herb..

                                              Kam , I'm from Dothan,Al and putting Ranch Dressing into mashed potatoes is a new one on me ... I don't know of anyone from this area who does add that to their mashed potatoes... As for me , I just use hot riced potatoes , hot heavy cream , softened butter and salt and freshly ground black pepper in my mashed potatoes ...

                                                I enjoy adding some butter, s&p and finely diced raw onion. Leftovers are terrific fried in patties for breakfast. One pet peeve I should mention: I don't even regard a soupy goopy dish as mashed potatoes. To my taste, barely mash it enough to mix in your additions and that's it. Still a little chunky and potatoey (a new word! ). To each their own though ... have them as you enjoy them! Oh also, I love sour cream and cheese but to me that's more of a baked potato thing.

                                                  Wookman,try adding cream cheese,sour cream , some sharp Cheddar, crumbled fried bacon and sliced green onions and salt and pepper to chunky mashed red potatoes with the skins left on... Put in a buttered casserole dish ... Top with more shredded Cheddar and bake in a pre-heated 350 degree oven about 30 minutes or so until the cheese topping is melted,bubbly and browned and the potatoes are hot through and through ...                                                     If making them for company, I will add; garlic, bacon, cheese, sour cream, or green onions, and I always make them with mayo AND butter.. if making them for myself..
