And at Van Gogh's real Dutch BBQ, they trowel on the sauce an inch thick! So just how far are we going to go with this? Braque's Bar-B-"Cubist" Ribs? Duchamp's Dada 'Que; an empty plate served by a nude waitress descending a staircase? Your turn. This could be fun. Enjoying the wide canvas that is Barbecue, Buddy

I plan to place an order for his pulled pork, via the net. I am not a religious person, but I am a true southerner. The man has some stones to air his convictions, no matter our current sheepish, PC society. In the 70's we had a chain called "Johnny Reb's." It was as southern as southern got, and no one marched, whined, or complained. They just ate their fried chicken, okra, chicken & dumplings, and drank their sweet tea.

Had to go to Columbia the other day, and while there, saw a Maurices. Check this out. I got a pound of ribs. It was the real deal, not babies. BUT........ Cost me $15.75 for the pound and a 22 oz iced tea. It was 5 bones, and to be honest? They can keep them. I ate 2 and threw the rest away. They slathered them with their mustard sauce, which IMHO, isnt very good. I guess I shoulda got the 4 dollar pork sandwich instead. Learned my lesson, wont be going back there anytime soon.

Maurices use to make a killer frozen dinner. Big side of bbq, small side of hash over rice, and a side of baked beans. In a tear open box like Michelina's but bigger. These were fantastic!!! When the media started promoting Maurice's racism, grocery stores started dropping the line- until they were unavailable. Kinda sucked imo.

Over sauced, over hyped, over priced. And propaganda-filled, counter to my beliefs. I live in Columbia, adore good barbeque, and haven't given Maurice a nickle since he made a mockery of the American flag some years back. Yes it is his right. Fine. My right is to choose to dine elsewhere. Better Columbia 'q is found at Hudson's, Boar's Nest, Little Pigs. Better yet is Sweatman's in Holly Hill.

Try the hash next time but if headed east and it is the end of the week, go into Watford's in Bishopville (30-40 mnutes east of Columbia on I-26). Try the combo of chopped and hash. Get a bag of skins for the rest of the ride.

Wow,you don't find that sort of stuff in thelittle mom and pop cafes and BBQ joints here in Texas. At least not in the San Antonio -Austin area.I prefer my meat without sauce,if it's cooked right.Don't think I would care for mustard based sauces. It maybe the reason there aren't mustard based BBQ sauce amongst the Texas Germans and Slavs might depend on what part of the old country they came from.

that's a heckuva observation...Germans are all over the mid SC area, and also in Texas (ie the sausage). Wonder why SC took up the mustard style and not Tejas?

Don't know why mustard sauce never caught on with the Germans who settled Texas. As for how and why it got started with the Carolina Germans, Ort. Carlton. provides a fine history on page two of this very thread, about a third of the way down from the top of the page. Buddy

It just struck me that sausage is very popular around mid SC but difficult to find in great variety in mid NC. We Prebyterians must have been real PIA's two hundred years ago. In Texas sausage is on the menu of every Q place but I have never seen it in NC or SC. Grocery stores have a pretty good selection in SC but basically only Johnsonville or the store brands brats in NC.

Been to Melvin's in Mt Pleasant many times on the way to the papermill in Georgetown.....being from lower Alabama I did not try to mustard sauce....Melvin's had an OK red sauce and the food was pretty good for a starving guy who just got off a plane from Mobile via Atlanta to Charleston and all that Delta saw fit to offer after a 0700 liftoff was a tiny biscuit and diet Coke..........

What does his sauce taste like? I won't buy it because of his views. I know that may sound crazy to some but he is over the top for my tastes. I tried a yellow, somewhat sweet, tangy mustard sauce at a place down the street (it's called Rocklands, and sometimes I can smell it from my balcony here in DC) and I liked it a lot. In fact, I think it's one of my favorite sauces. As a side note, this is a bbq place that has a ton of hot sauces and bbq sauces people can try. A woman was chatting with her friends and she grabbed a bottle of "Sudden Death" without looking at the bottle. She kept chatting with her friends as she emptied 1/2 of the bottle on her sandwich. I wonder if she knew what it was - I saw someone do this another time as well. I guess I'm not much of a chili head. Barry

But like I say, I've seen it happen there before. About a month ago they created a little section in their "wall" of hot sauces and partitioned off all of the hotter sauces. I'm guessing that someone complained. I might go back today to find out what that mustard sauce was, it sure was good. Barry

Some time back we were having tacos at home and one of my kids didn't read the label on the sauce bottle she picked up; I always put out mild/medium and hot. Needless to say she got quite a surprise; I laughed at her and told her that's what happens when you don't pay attention. Brad

Years ago, when I and the internet were young, Maurice's offered a free bottle of their sauce online. I liked it well enough that I ordered a half case and used it occasionally. Still have one bottle unopened. But over the years, mustard BBQ sauces have grown more common. The one that I like best is a jalapeno mustard sauce from the Extra Innings BBQ in Lincoln, Kansas. It is more sweet than hot and it is great on smoked sausage. I now pick up a half dozen bottles when I get near there. Keith
