To me, there are two difference products that may look the same, but taste different and with different scents, mouth feel, and such.

How can one be better; when it is really just a matter of preference.

Speaking of Hellmann's, compare these original ingredients with the current label, and note how far they've strayed from Richard Hellmann's recipe.  I'm having trouble determining the last ingredient from the pictured label.  I don't think it would be the preservative EDTA, because it may not have been available back then.  But it could be.  Can anyone help me?  Thank you!

Notice there is no water, yet today water is the #2 ingredient behind soybean oil.

I have been a Hellman's user all my life, but when I can get it, I now use Dukes. My cousin has to mail it to me from N.C. Sorry, Mellow, I cant even read that!

annpeeples:  Thank you for trying.  By the way, I didn't know where to post the question.  There are so many mayonnaise threads!

Ann, I used Hellmann's (Best Foods) for years, too, until they changed the recipe early this decade.  Why can't they leave a good product alone?

I am so disappointed in Hellmans-especially now that I have found Dukes. Unfortunately, I have to mail order Dukes from my cousin, so it is an expensive condiment!I have heard JPG is good, also, but that, too is not available in Wisconsin. I learned how to make my own mayo in home ec in high school, and the ingredients were just as Mr. Hellman started with. Mellow-what brand do you use down in 'nooga?

I think that Best Foods/Hellman's went downhill when they started using plastic jars.  They're just wrong!

I also like Duke's when I can find it.  Once in awhile I find small jars of Dukes at Cost Plus World Market.

annpeeples: I use both JFG and Duke's, interchangeably, but JFG particularly on sandwiches, because it's so zesty.  I've been using Duke's in my pimento cheese recently, though.  Has your cousin found JFG on the mayo aisle?

Tip: I can't buy it in the South, but I was lucky enough to snag a jar of Cains Naturally Delicious® All Natural Mayonnaise (18-oz).   No corn syrup, no EDTA.  It was EXCELLENT, in spite of the fact that it comes in a squeeze jar.  It, too, has my highest recommendation.   Both flavor and consistency (thickness) were excellent, and I'd buy it regularly if I could get it.
mar52: Agree on the glass jars!

Ann, according to Duke's website the mayo can be found at Schnuck's stores in Illinois.  There are 4 in the stateline area (Rockford (2), Loves Park, Rockton) and also a store in Janesville.  I don't know if you get over this way very often but it might be something to keep in mind.

I go to Janesville fairly often and will have to remember to stop in at Schnuck's to see if Duke's is sold there.  I've never tried it but based on the comments here I think maybe I should!

I would go into their recipe section and get ideas.
Not their recipes but have made Cole Slaw, sandwiches of every type, potato salad and one of my favorites is egg salad sandwich. Even put it on Toast and had with eggs in the morning.LOL
Other half is joking me about dipping pork rinds in it.

I was raised on Miracle Whip and prefer it over mayo anytime.  Mayo is too oily.   And never mayo on a burger.

Mom was a Miracle Whip fan, too, didn't like mayo at all, and would use it in family dishes like chicken salad, potato salad, slaw, etc.  Dad would make sure there was a jar of JFG in the fridge for the rest of us to use for our own snacking.  It was a hoot.

Hellman's reduced fat mayo. I have tried non fat mayos..YUCK.
I like Miracle Whip (sounds kinda kinky), but anyway, i find it add too much tanginess to certain dishes and overwhelms the other flavours.

Seems to me that there are two kinds of folks in the world--those who use mayo----and those that use that other wierd stuff!!! Guess which one i am! So----what brightens up YOUR sandwhiches?

Neither one.    Mayo (or Miracle Whip) are among my least favorite foods.  Not just least favorite.....  I really can't stand them.    When a burger order arrives wrong and has mayo (or miricle whip)  on it, I just can't eat it.

One of my biggest pet peeves is restaurants that don't list the mayo in the menu when a dish or sandwich has it.   The menu will say something the "Turkey Lurkey Sandwich", and just below it lists that it has turkey, cheese, onion, pickles, and lettuce.   Okay, so I expect it to have turkey, cheese, onion, pickles, and lettuce, .... right?     So, I ask for a "turkey Lurkey Sandwich".    Then,  it arrives with the above ingredients PLUS it has mayo on it.    What the %#%@!!  Why do restaurants do that?

Do they expect us to be mind readers?   I can't count how many sandwiches I have sent back because they were ruined with mayo.  I'm sure the restaurant doesn't enjoy losing money on sent back food, either.   Is it so tough for them to list what is actually on the sandwich?  They bothered to list all that other stuff (onions, lettuce, pickles, etc.) .  They can't put in one more word: "mayo" ??    What if someone had a an allergy to mayo for some reason, and bit right in without looking?

The restaurants seem good about listing other sandwich ingredients like lettuce, or tomato, or onion, etc.,   but for some reason, many don't list the mayo they put on the sandwich.  Why is this?     Any restauranteurs here who can shed some light on this?

I am now in the habit of always asking for NO mayo, whether it is listed or not, if it's  a new restaurant for me.   But, still....it's frustrating that they don't list what's actually on the sandwich ... ... everything that's on it.

Sorry for the rant...and sorry if this has already been addressed in an earlier post.   I just saw this topic and didn't read through all 300+ replies.

                                              Thanks.

Hellman's reduced fat mayo. I have tried non fat mayos..YUCK.
I like Miracle Whip (sounds kinda kinky), but anyway, i find it add too much tanginess to certain dishes and overwhelms the other flavours.

Now that you mention it, I guess that applies to Cool Whip, as well!

                                                  I LOVE Mayo.

Fond memories of the early Sixties when my Dad (he was a restaurant executive) made sandwiches at home with wonder white bread, Miracle Whip, tomato, slice of American cheese, and some kind of meat sliced (bologna or Buddig?).
As an adult I never ate Miracle Whip, yuck, all the sugar.
Growing up we never even considered making food from scratch, packaged food was NEW and meant PROGRESS! It was the age of Tang, packaged cake mixes, packaged pudding mix, etc., But now I see how easy it is to make food from fresh organic ingredients from scratch, so WHY NOT?????

I am looking for the perfect mayonaisse recipe. There was a good recipe on MasterChef Australia 2nd season aprox episode 25ish. I made a James Beard version in the blender and it was good although not like the jarred kind. And Gordon Ramsay has recipes on youtube. I'm sure if I scroll through this LONG thread I might find a good recipe!

Recently bought a jar of Hellman's  new Mayonesa mayonnaise. Lime instead of lemon juice. Should have  realized a Mexican style mayo made in Canada wasn't going to cut it. Stick with McCormicks Mayonesa, it's the real thing .
