quote:Originally posted by lamertz Raised on Miracle Whip and, fortunately found Helman's early on. I've been buying Helman's Lite but it's just not the same. Blue Bell is indeed a superior product and hard to find. When I do find it,how much is safe to buy at one time? When I travel and find Blue Bell, I look at the dates and choose the most recent jars. But I only buy two quarts as I live alone and don't use much mayo. As you know, canned products can last a long time, but the longer foodstuff sits on a shelf, the less fresh it will taste. With locally available mayo, I buy one quart jar at a time. Two years ago, the friend who has shipped Blue Plate to me suggested I check the local WalMart. I did and found a full line of Blue Plate products. A few months later when I returned for more, this WM was no longer selling Blue Plate mayo, but was carrying Duke's instead. Blue Plate is made in Louisiana.

Good to see so many sensible folks! I am going to have try Hellmans Lite if so many like it. In the past i have avoided anything with the word "Lite" in it like the plague. ........BTW...anyone got any idea why its Hellmans east of the Rockies and Best Foods west???...and i should be able to get Blue Plate here in OK if its from LA and try it too..and another thing--does anyone agree that mayo taste better at room temp then it does out of the fridge??--i know , i know, its supposed to be refridgerated, but im like it warmer so i have gotten into the habit of buy small jars so i can have it at room temp if i want---not always a big deal on a well stuffed sandwich but a world of difference with a plate of sun ripe tomato slices with salt and fresh cracked pepper!!!

A couple of comments about Mayo. The bad rap mayo always got about food poisoning is wrong. Having mayo on or in a sandwich will help keep it from spoiling due to the lemon juice. I do not use Hellmans Lite when I make sandwiches, I'm a snob. My wife has been a big fan of ranch dressing for years. She always bought the seasoning packets and made her own. The price kept going up and they became hard to find so I turned to the internet. I found a recipe that resembled Hidden Vally and tweaked it a little. I use half real Hellmans and half Lite. If anyone is a ranch dressing fan I can post the recipe. Monday. We are leaving to go to Daytona today. Cakes

Love Hellmans. Use Kraft only in mayo emergencies. Miracle whip is not allowed in the house.

I grew up in a MIracle Whip family and unknowingly married a Miracle Whip wife. I became a Hellman's convert many years ago, due to a roommate who introduced me to the glories of an avocado topped with Hellman's. I now hate Miracle Whip, though I cannot go to the lengths redtressed espouses. Like JiminKy, I also abhor Dukes.

I agree with GordonW above that the hand-made fresh mayo is really the best. However, when we're camping or out on the boat and everyone is hungry and wants that sandwich NOW I gotta reach for the Hellmann's Lite. redtressed, even tho The Big Guy is a MW eater he took me out last night for drinks and dinner so I had to give him a smooch. Sorry.

quote:originally posted by JiminKY: There is one mayo I truly abhor, and I can taste it in things. It's Duke's which is made in Richmond, Virginia. Duke's uses vinegar, and to me, has a stale taste. It seems to be the mayo that chains use for tartar sauce. I just hate its dull, off-flavor. Duke's is usually the cheapest mayo on the supermarket shelf. Sorry Jim, but I beg to differ on this one. A lot of us who are partial to Duke's grew up believing that mayonaisse should not have a sweet taste, and any of them that do are totally unacceptable. When I make potato salad, or a BLT or ham sandwich, I don't want it to taste as though I've added sugar. I find I'm agreeing with Ort quite a bit lately. Scary.

We are leaving to go to Daytona today. Cakes Cakes, you might want to reconsider your recommendation. Due to addition of egg portions, it makes it a perfect medium for Salmonella to incubate, reproduce and create a toxin that can be fatal and certainly will make you sick. There is not enough citric acid present to inhibit bacterial growwth. Under no circumstances should you let any product that contains any of the above stay at room temp very long. My experience as a bacteriologist and immunohematologist has taught me what grows in what. Paul E. Smith Knoxville, TN

I think a lot of your food habits have to do with how you are brought up. I can only ever remember my mother using Miracle Whip when I was growing up. I still use MW but I also use Duke's for certain things such as my potato salad. John
