Always mayo rather than Miracle Whip -- but usually mustard rather than mayo. (Hope that doesn't qualify as hijacking the topic.)

I must add to this...my husband lives and breathes Miracle Whip(but then he puts sugar in his grits..says that's the way they do it in Tennessee...Sundancer?), and he's starting our son in the same direction. Power struggle I guess, I prefer our son eats Kraft, but I guess it's what he likes not us. Now if I use Kraft in say potato salad, my husband will eat it.
The ONLY way I do like Miracle Whip is in the makings of a salad dressing(I know that's what it is)our local Pizza Inn(long gone)use to make. I asked the manager how to make the dressing. It was Miracle Whip, a little garlic powder, the juice from black olives and celery seed. On a fresh ice cold salad this is really good.

This is one that I could have included on the "hated it as a kid, but love it now" thread. When I was younger, I would only eat Miracle Whip on sandwiches. I would eat mayo in potato salad, but that was about it. Now, I am about 50-50. I still think that Miracle Whip goes better with some things like bologna which I rarely even eat anymore. But I will eat mayo on anything and I really prefer it on hamburgers and BLTs.

My mother would never use Miracle Whip and my wife wouldn't think of anything BUT Hellman's.

My friend says that his father used to say "You know, given enough mayonaise, I could eat a dead horse". That's kind of my feeling too.

Miracle Whip is an abomination, fit only to lubricate bolt holes and moisten lickable postage stamps. I cannot understand how there can be any mention of this, this, whatever it is, on a website that has the word food in it's title. The only thing miraculous about this stuff is the fact that anyone would willingly put it in his or her mouth.

The more I think about it, the more I think I might let someone know how I really feel about this product.

Now we have really stuck a chord that sets me right into orbit. While I love The Big Guy (SO) with all my heart.....he eats.....Miracle Whip. On everything that's not covered in ketchup. Makes me nauseous. Of course this is mainly limited to sandwiches, quesadillas, wraps and the such. I was properly raised on Hellmann's Mayo and now love Hellmann's Lite and a team of wild horses could not drag me far enough to put Miracle Whip on a sandwich.

It seems to me that the comparison between the two is like comparing apples to oranges. They have totally different taste and it seems to me that they have different uses.

I like both and just use them for different purposes.

Miracle Whip seems to have a hint of lemon in it? I do not know it just taste that way. Mayo seems to be a different animal and equally good in its own way.

You may like one more than the other and I appreciate that. It seems to me it is like comparing steak sauces which most are different in taste.

I will agree that Hellman's has the best Mayo and Kraft has the best Miracle Whip, perhaps that is their brand name?

I never used to have mayo on anything, but before I get jumped on let me quickly state that it's not my fault -- I was raised in a Miracle Whip household! Of late, however, I've found that mayo's better in most things.

My brother and his family came visiting during Oktoberfest this fall. My brother's been living in North Carolina for thirty years and by now is more Southern than my sister-in-law, who's a native! They ordered brats on the fest grounds and politely requested mayo to put on them. They got some disbelieving looks, but those polite Midwesterners working behind the counter were too nice to say anything and actually unearthed some little packages of Hellman's for them.

I like a good mayonnaise and I want it fresh. I buy one quart bottle at a time.

Mayo has been a big deal around here when I've tried to fine tune some recipes heavily dependent on it, mostly slaws.

Some brands of mayonnaise contain lemon juice and some only have vinegar. Several brands use a bit of sugar.

My very favorite mayo is Blue Bell, which I can't buy here. Folks get it for me in the Deep South, or I stop for it when I travel.

For my taste buds, Hellman's is oily. I suspect Hellman's is the most popular commercial choice, but I just don't love it.

After Blue Bell, I like the Kroger brand. In fact I like it very much. I also like Kraft's mayo.

There is one mayo I truly abhor, and I can taste it in things. It's Duke's which is made in Richmond, Virginia. Duke's uses vinegar, and to me, has a stale taste. It seems to be the mayo that chains use for tartar sauce. I just hate its dull, off-flavor. Duke's is usually the cheapest mayo on the supermarket shelf.

I really like Hellmans on my french fries. Sometimes I add some chopped pickles and chopped onions with it.

Raised on Miracle Whip and, fortunately found Helman's early on. I've been buying Helman's Lite but it's just not the same. Blue Bell is indeed a superior product and hard to find. When I do find it,how much is safe to buy at one time?

                                              Dearfolk,
I've always been partial (even if JimInKy isn't!) to Duke's Mayonnaise. The same company makes Sauer's, which is an entirely different recipe!
My two favorite things to do with Duke's are to eat a vine-ripened, homegrown tomato, fresh-cut off the vine, with a dollop of it and a sprinkle of salt (paradise!) - and to put on french fries, believe it or not. I like the vinegar-y flavor that's in there, although I admit it isn't to some people's tastes. But then again, neither is livermush! By extension, it also makes luscious BLT's.
Can anyone report on Mrs. Clark's Salad Dressing from Iowa? I've never tried it; apparently it's THE key ingredient in prize-winning pea salad... without it, no prize. A friend of mine just went home to a small town in Western Illinois and couldn't find it there ("Ya gotta go to Iowa to get that, ya do," she was told.). It must be truly local....

Just a youth thing but I love ham salad with Miracle Whip. All other needs are covered by mayo usually made by myself.

Hellman's mayo is the only thing I keep around the house. I adopted my son 20 years ago at age 13, and all he had ever had was Miracle Whip. Now all he will eat is Hellman's mayo (not Kraft or any other brand). And worst of all, he will put it on just about everything including pizza, french fries, potato chips, mix it into sauces when he cooks, etc.

I can only report on Mrs. Clark's Salad Dressing half heartedly. The Big Guy (SO) is from Iowa and I just got back from Iowa and parents-in-law live in Iowa (only during the months where the weather is tolerable, so not NOW.) Apparently the company was started by one Bertha Clark around 1926 in Ankeny, Iowa. Since there was nothing for Bertha Clark to do all day in Ankeny, Iowa she decided to whip up some salad dressings to amuse herself. Pea salad will never be the same. I'm told she also whipped up a mean Thousand Island dressing, as adversized on the sides of her trucks at:

One more in the Mayo column. I grew up on homemade mayo. Nothing else like it.

Oh Boy... Ya, Mayo by choice... BUT, Miracle Whip works really good in my potato salads when mixed with Dijon mustard... But for overall use - MAYO... I was brought up on Miracle Whip, but when I passed the age of 30 (Several, several Years Ago) my taste buds came in alignment! Yup MAYO!

Just as an indication of the respect Miracle Whip gets, do a Google search. Half of the first page talks about radio antennas. . . .

You can't beat real, fresh-made mayo. I served it one time as a dip for raw vegs, and the people said, "What is this stuff. It's great." O.k. . . raw egg yolks. Then go for the high-quality stuff in the store.

My curiousity got the better of me and I decided to call MomZ and find out the REAL scoop (for Ort. of course) about Mrs. Clark's Salad Dressing. MomZ remembered Mrs. Clarks, but said, "oh, the REAL good Salad Dressing was made by Dorothy Lynch!" Now, Dorothy Lynch was another chick that had nothing but time and dressing on her hands in Nebraska. Hmmmmm. There's a pattern here. So we chatted awhile and The Big Guy and I looked up Dorothy Lynch on the Web and here are some Interesting Ways To Use Dorothy Lynch Dressings While Keeping Your Family Happy:
                                                            www.dorothylynch.com/recipes/index.cfm
She could've contributed to the Snappy Mackerel Casserole collection. So there you have it folks, two long distance calls to CA and precious time spent researching only to find out about.......TA DA! DOROTHY LYNCH!
