Mazatlan Part 2: Tequila Sun, 12/14/08 4:28 AM (permalink)
We start the morning off sensibly enough with chilaquiles from room service. Do I even need to tell you that they totally kick ass?

Even American breakfast came with chilaquiles and magic tortilla cups.

From the minute we stepped on the tour bus there was screaming from the ugly Americans – Cranky Guy was hollering that they were just gonna get off the bus and screw the whole thing if they were going to cram 2 more people in there.

I do not have good luck with tour buses.

We were driven for an hour along deserted dirt roads populated with black buzzards, vultures, crosses marking deaths in the road and homes with private backyard cemeteries.

Then it was all blue agave until we hit the Los Osunas Factory

After the agave is hacked up, you are left with the pina.

(The sound you hear is my spitting out butterflies)

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=yXOk5-WgYpM

The pina is cooked in underground kilns.

At this point you can chew on it and extract the agave juice which is seriously addicting. Seriously. And maybe a hallucinogen. The jury is still out. But later that night this is what I wrote while chewing it:

It kind of looks like horses hooves made out of beef jerky. You chew and suck on the fibers and they release their sweet nectar. There is something light and sweet molaases and honey, masking something darker, a slight sensation of alcohol and sex in a smoky room. I wasn;t paying too much attention to what the tour guide was saying at this point, but it wasn't raw agave pina. Later I asked if I could take some with me, which appeared to be an unusual request. They said to be careful with it so it wouldn’t spoil or ferment. So what I have is definitely not fermented. I wonder if I can get it through customs, or if the bees trailing my bags will be a dead giveaway.

At the tequila factory I tried to take pictures following the pipes so my friends back home could follow the process, but I kept getting distracted by scary machinery and things on fire.

At first I thought this was some kind of torture device. But then my brother explained to me that it was part of a pulley system to power this torture device with teeth that you can see in the videos.

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=l1aGE6r5fz0

I liked this cog for no special reason.

I still don't know what this is

I got kind of bored while he discussed the fermentation process

135 proof straight from the bucket

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=EbUhOBDF4qk

Production:

The alcohol has to be mixed with distilled water because its natural liquor content is too high.

And what happens in this room?

Oh, sorry, mister

Then it was time to drink

The horses had big dents in their heads that kind of freaked me out

The factory owner stuck his thumb in it to show me it was OK

Now there goes a real cowboy

Back through the agave fields. On the trip there, the guide told us about the local flora and fauna, and how the state of Jalisco had a copyright on the word tequila, so it's kind of like Champagne. But on the way back, maybe the tequila had gotten to him. He started telling long stories about cannibals and brujas. This is a plant brujas use to dry up your brain.

Woman on tour to husband: what's a brujas?
Husand: You know honey, like those German places where they sell beer.

ET You make such a good translator for the Counterculture of all the places you visit, and even when obviously under the influence () of the stimulents you are watching being made, you manage to keep your photos in focus. How about passing that skill along to others in the group!

            XLNT!

What an interesting report. To think I always thought it was the leaves that were used. Why would I even think it was the core? Those poor leaves, what a waste! That great core, what a taste!

There were bees? I could never have stayed for the tour. Lock me up in the bus!

So tell me about those sample belts. Did anyone wear them? Did you down one or did you sip?

Really, Elise your report was very interesting. The only thing missing was the fixins for a margarita.

That's funny. Don't lie, you really do love riding round with your fellow countrymen. You could not find better material if you tried.
You have one of the best traveling attitudes of anyone here.

Agave is showing up in some of those 'energy' drinks with 3Xcaffiene and other jungle drugs. I think they are shooting for the old Coke with cocaine type idea.

Don't mean to be a spoil sport here but....

Gotta be careful in Mexico, if the water doen't get you ... the kidnappers might. I say stay away until the country gets it's act together.

                          I plead the fifth.

"There were bees? I could never have stayed for the tour. Lock me up in the bus!

So tell me about those sample belts. Did anyone wear them? Did you down one or did you sip?"

There SO many bees and hornets that eventually you just swat them away. And butterflies, one of which flew right in my mouth. They love the sweet nectar.

No one I saw bought or wore the belt.

"That's funny. Don't lie, you really do love riding round with your fellow countrymen. You could not find better material if you tried."

My favorite overheard tourist comment is still from Lake Louise:

I didn't realize the glacier would be covered with ice!

                            Hi Elise!

This is my first post...so hello!

I've been enjoying reading everyones trip reports so much! I'm snowed in and so thread about a warm place is so soothing! It's almost like I'm there! Well done!

Never thought my first post on a food site would be about horses, but here it goes...

I'm a horse trainer for a living, so I can answer to your concerns about the "dents" in the horses heads. They are actually very similar to the temples we have on our heads. As horses get older, they "sink". They can become sunken if a horse is suffering from sever dehydration or malnutrition, but the pics you've posted of those two cuties look like they are in fine health for Mexican horses. (They care for their animals a bit differently than those of us in the U.S. do, as do most countries). So it's very likely that the horses they were using were just "well aged and mature". And there is nothing wrong with that. And quite likely what makes them appropriate for the tourists and beginners they likely deal with often.

Again, thanks so much for the great trip reports (that goes for everyone!). I'm really enjoying the forums here. Great info, great looking food, and a great group of folks!

Don't worry about the horses, Elise. As horses age they develop those indentations. My pony, Molly, who is twenty-something has them and she is well, healthy as a horse!

yes, the horses were very well cared for, whichis more than I can say for the mules that were left in the hot sun with no water. And far better than the roosters in my next post...
