McD*nald's urban myth? Wed, 04/2/08 2:21 PM (permalink)
Bear with me . . .

I heard something on the radio the other day that I'd heard in the past and dismissed as a joke:

McD*nald's is the largest purchaser of cow anus (beef?) in the world, second only to the US military.

Anyone care to chime-in on this?

Not right on point, but this link has some interesting points, including that the McDonald's ingredients list includes "100% beef". The site claims that it can't be parts (in this case, eye balls).

So, I don't know if cow anus counts as constuting "100% beef", but that double qp I ate yesterday is sitting a little less easy in the chair of my heart...

Oops. Distracted by double qp aftertaste.

Well, I'd think you'd get at least one with every head of cattle you bought. If they buy more cattle than anyone, then I'd say what you heard is right.

That linked article didn't exactly put the rumor to rest.

I also heard there's fish in some of their chicken items . . . "100% White Meat" being somewhat open ended.

I'd believe it if McD's sold "beef" scrapple.

I'm open to ANY hard facts that prove they do or don't.

Not a "conspiracy theorist" . . . just heard it on the radio and laughed. Stranger things are true.

Can't remember the last time I ate there. It doesn't effect me either way.

Does this mean we might have an Andrew Zimmern Bizarre Foods show on McDonald's now?

Well, if you bring it to the board and say you're open to ANY hard facts that prove they....don't, that pretty much suggests that you are a "conspiracy theorist".

This one is just as nonsensical as the first urban legend that you posted.

Think about the issue of people who have food allergies, including those who suffer anaphylactic shock from eating something that they are highly allergic to. Do you REALLY think that McDonald's, or any other company that is interested in staying in business, would put fish into a food product without making the consumer aware that it contains fish?

Doing as you suggest would make them subject to so many lawsuits over the issue of major health problems and deaths that they would have gone out of business years ago.

The idea stems from a Jack-in-the-box commercial which talks about the sirloin burger and shows where the sirloin is located on the cow and someone asks Jack to "point to the angus area" since Carl Jr's are serving angus burgers. Jack responds "i'd rather not'. Thus alluding that Carl's Jr.'s Angus burgers uses anus in it's angus beef. CKE Restaurants sued Jack-in-the-box, inc over the ads. Jack-in-the-box's ad wasn't serious, it was making a joke.

There's not a smidgeon of truth Carl's Jr. or McDonalds or any other fast food chain using anus. Ground beef isn't ground cow. Anyone believing or passing on such a "theory" is a person who does not understand bad logic. Offal cannot be used in ground beef. Thems the laws in the US.

Obviously, y'all have not butchered beef. Offal gets saved , such as liver, tongue and rarely now, brains, even testicles albeit I haven't seen any one save 'em yet. I haven't seen anyone in the US ever save and process kidney either. As far as cow anus, uhmmm...no way Jose', not even in olden day descriptions of butchering. I've hel;ped out at hundreds of butchering days in my lifetime, (not by choice, trust me) and it's just not a retained item.

(By the way, have I mentioned....offal is awful?)

I have a silly question. Why does it have to be "McD*nald's"? Is it a sin to type the actual name of the restaurant or something? Sheesh.

It is because of the new Roadfood word filter. All chain restaurant names are now filtered by Roadfood, much like swear words on other sites. Except of course, Waffle House, and White Castle because... well just because.

BTW, I never said the snopes link definitively did away with the rumor about cow anus in the double qp. I'm just glad I don't eat cow eyeballs.
