McDonald's in Hospital

During our last trip to visit relatives in Miami, our niece had her baby so we went to the hospital. I was surprised to see a McDonald's on the ground floor. Isn't that sort of like an oxymoron? And business was good too.

Perhaps they are connected up with a RONALD McDONALD HOUSE. I don't know if they are or not. (If your kid is hospitalized, and you live in BFE you can stay close by, courtesy RONALD McDONALD HOUSE.)

Knoxville has a beautiful Ronald McDonald's house where parents of sick children stay for free. You can say what you wish about mcDonalds but that is a heck of a wonderful community service. It is only one block from the Presbyterian hospital and a easy walk. I do not know what other services they offer. Paul E. Smith Knoxville, TN

My daughter recently had surgery in Minneapolis and the hospital had a McDees. It was right next to the cardiac care wing. Go figure!

I work at The Ohio State University Medical Center and we have a Wendy's on the ground floor. Of course, you can't go a mile in Columbus without seeing at least one Wendy's. They do a huge business at noon and they are open until 3:00 AM. It is really the only food choice for late shifters as the cafeteria closes at 7:00.

The idea of a McDonalds in a hospital is disgusting, but I don't blame McDonalds, I blame the hospitals. As for Ronald McDonald House, it is a wonderful charity, but these houses are neither owned or operated by McDonalds. McDonalds (as well as many, many other businesses) help to fund the houses, but the vast majority of the houses operating income comes from their own local fundraising. Don't get me wrong, McDonalds has donated a lot of money to these local organizations, but I think the public perception is that McDonalds has a charitable wing of it's organization called Ronald McDonald House, and that is simply not true.

There's a Wendy's in Detroit Receiving downtown. That's a definite match (crazy food for crazy people). I don't see what's wrong with a McD in a hospital if they had Wendy's in hospitals.

After my dad's last stint in the hospital I wish there had been a Mc D's or Taco Bell or Shakey's (which is what he asked for) at Froedtert/Medical College of Wisconsin. His surgery was scheduled for early in the morning, so they told him NOT to eat after midnight. Then they called to change the surgery & he was told he could eat. When they got to the hospital they cancelled his surgery because he had eaten. Then the doctor said, no we will squeeze you in. Then, because they had cancelled the first surgery, they did not have a bed or room for him, so he sat in recovery for 4 hours. By the time I got there at 10pm he was working on his third cup of Jello & the first thing he asked me when the nurses left us alone was, "Did you bring me something to eat?" There are restaurants not far from there, but it would have been nice not to pay for parking twice.

I think the hospital administrators permit McDonalds in hospitals because it is less hassle for them: 1. Food is safe to eat in the short term; very few cases of food poisoning traced to McDonalds. Long term: forgettaboutit. 2. McDonalds keeps the quality of individual restauarants up; keeps the hospital administrators from being the boogie man. 3. McDonalds menu items are carefully tested before being sold; less complaints to administrators about "the food in your cafeteria is terrible". 4. Cost: Vistors, patients, employees can get a meal cheap. Of course, employees should not eat that stuff more than once in a blue moon. But it does help out lowly paid hospital workers the days before payday. 5. Market Development: hospital admiminstrators know prolonged consumption of McDonalds food will increase the need for their services.

My sister was telling not too long ago that she has seen a Taco Bell at a hospital in Pennsylvania. I myself can think of at least two hospitals in Virginia where both have Subways and one of those has their own Starbucks as well. Starbucks is in the VA Hospital in Martinsburg, West Virginia. I have heard its the ONLY Starbucks in that area. A few years back I seem to recall one hospital in Virginia tried to get either Sheetz or maybe 7-11 to put in a mcro-version of their store in a hospital. No gas pumps but some place where one can get a sub, pizza, hot dogs, and of course snacks. As I recall, both chains said no to the idea.

Don't know if it is still the case, but I remember that twenty some years ago, there was a McDonald's in Children's Hospital in Philadelphia (CHOP, the rather bizarre acronym!). I wonder if it represented "comfort fast food" for children who were going through medical care there.

I was in a hospital for a couple of days with kidney surgery several years ago. Anything from the worst of the worst fast food places would have been better than the slop they fed patients. Jello and seven up was it for me.
