"LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Every day inside an unassuming building on the outskirts of Oklahoma City, thousands of hamburgers are run through metal detectors on their way to becoming Big Macs and Quarter Pounders. " I wonder, if the patties get beeped at the metal dectector, do they get to empty their pockets and go through the metal detectors a second time before being being "wanded" like I do?

"Tests for bacteria like E.coli that cause food-borne illnesses are conducted before the meat is allowed to be unloaded at the plant..." Sooo..if they detect metal in the patties with a metal detector, does it stand to reason that they detect e coli with a bulls**t detector?

I'm no big fan of McD, but food safety is never a joke. As a young Marine, with less than a month in the Corps, I learned first hand how one poorly cleaned salad machine could make a whole 800 man battalion sick. Every restaurant pro that I know is very serious about sanitation.

Gee whiz, you know I'm sure their food quality (safety-wise) is as good as or better than their competitors, but I definitely feel that their "quality" in terms of attention to detail and the ablility to produce consistent, appealing meals has deteriorated over the past ten years or so. It used to be that you'd go to a McDonalds and have a good idea of what you'd get. Now, not so much (unless you're willing to accept the idea of a sloppily-assembled burger with unmelted cheese and cold, soggy fries!) Also, I think the overall cleanliness of the dining area and bathrooms has slipped quite a bit, though that may reflect today's clientele as much as the management.

I had a Big Mac a couple days ago and the hamburger patties were so thin you could almost see through them. Bland and tasteless, and I used to really like a Big Mac. MikeS.
