I had to make a emergency pit stop at McDonalds the other morning while in Texas. I had a Atkins break and bought a McGriddle. I have to admit I was dissapointed. It was a soggy pancake that was sweetened by maple syrup wrapped around a sausage. Concept was good but the concoction appeared prepared, frozen and microwaved. Sonic has got a better version. sometimes the term "Any port in a storm" does not apply. Great concept but it will never compete with their all time hit that has never been equaled is the McMuffin. They hit a home run with that one. Paul E. Smith Knoxville, TN

"Eggamuffin yeah" was a quote from a comedy album cut titled The Jazz Musician back in the late 70's. Donpt remember who did the album though. I try to avoid McDonalds, and I have to laugh at their new steak sandwich TV ad showing the employee of some "famous" steak sandwich joint having a friend deliver a Micky Dee's steak to him which he eats around the corner from the back door. Got to give McDonalds credit for trying to improve their menu and attract adult customers, but the food quality has a long way to go.

Hey clothier, I'm in Upstate NY, Rochester. Maybe the new steak sandwiches they are pushing are regional, but with a real good copy of the original item at a place called Philly Steakout nearby, I'm not about the try the McDonalds version.

I also tried one of those McGriddles. I took one bite and threw it away. It was disgusting. I'd rather go hungry.

(being from jersey i can't get enough of bagels--but can't seem to get good ones out here! -- indiana-- guess i got spoiled working at one in jersey and having an unlimited supply of freshly made bagles and bialies!!!! yummmm.... anyway-- down with mc griddles and up with mc muffins!!!

It is funny (well, not in a ha-ha way) how McGriddles have become kind of a fad around here. I see people eating them, bragging about eating them, and bumming when not having had a chance to stop for one. Myself, I am not that brave. I do think it is funny that you see McDonald's go through phases in what it offers -- similar to the above post about the way they test market regionally. Seems like years ago they tried to market themselves as offering more healthy options -- now, they roll out McGriddles and a Philly Cheesesteak! Would you like to supersize your gastric bypass? Steve

that's right-- they did try to offer more 'healthy options' --- does anyone remember the Mc D L T?? that was the one that was served in a container (styrofoam plate like thingie) with the burger on one side and the lettuce and tomato on the other? that was supposed to be healthier -- and look how long they lasted??? NOT...... haven't seen the steak ads for mickey-d's yet but- i think maybe they should stick to burgers.. that's what they know best! :)

clothier asked quote:Is Don and Bob's still open? Ate there about 15 years or so ago. clothier, sorry I missed the second question until I was checking the forums today. After several decades of business, Don and Bob's closed a few years ago. There is a new Don's Original a few miles further East on Monroe Avenue that has the same basic menu. The old Don and Bob's was near 12 corners in the Town of Brighton, named for the three streets which intersected there. They were always busy, but especially crowded on Saturday nights, as many older people would get together with friends and go out for a late snack after they finished watching whatever on TV at 11 PM. That crowd met with the younger dating crowd just getting out of the movies. Don and Bob's specialized in ground rounds and Texas (red) or porker (white) hots, with their own blend of meat based hot sauce. They were known for the way the order taker would yell out your order to the grill cooks behind them "Three grounds, one red, one white". With about 10 registers going on a long counter, it made for an interesting wait until your food was ready. Another specialty was their chocolate almond custard. Luckily with Don's Original and several similar burger joints, not to forget Nick Tahoe's, we're still set for tasty heartburn creation here in Rochacha.

I somehow talked myself into trying one of the new Philly Cheesesteaks at McD's today - big mistake....or misteak.... It was teeny tiny, did not look like the picture, and generally a disappointment. I thought I would save others the trouble of trying one...

Got to give McDonalds credit for trying to improve their menu and attract adult customers, but the food quality has a long way to go. I remember that jazz musician bit on the old National Lampoon radio show - I'm pretty sure Bill Murray played the musician, being interviewed by Mister Rogers (played by I don't know who): 'Y'think someone could get me a cup'a coffee or sumthin'?' "You're not used to getting up this early, are ya?" 'I'm not here yet.' I remember ordering a rib sandwich at a NW Georgia bbq joint off I-75 and being warned 'it's not like a McRib'. Guess they had a lot of tourist traffic...a real rib sandwich does indeed have bones and is on soft white bread that's mostly there to soak up the sauce.

Looks like I'm the only one here that actually *enjoyed* my McGriddle experience. We had been driving from Baltimore to the Outer Banks and stopped for a much-needed breakfast break. I would normally go for an Egg McMuffin but opted for the McGriddle. I wasn't expecting a whole lot and thought it was decent for what it was. My biggest complaint? If you're going to push the envelope, figure a way to get those Hash Browns on there, too! I have not worked up the courage to try the McPhilly McCheesesteak Sandwich yet. I grew up in the Philly area, so it seems a bit blasphemous to me. And what's with that item and Domino's Philly Cheese Steak Pizza? Speaking of disappointing fast food items, has anybody else tried one of those Burger King chicken baguette sandwiches? The thing was so small that when I looked in the bag I thought they'd forgotten it! As for McDonald's, I was glad that they went back to the old school Filet O Fish and ditched the lettuce and that chewy roll. Yuck. Gimme that spongy bun anyday!

Vince, I stand corrected. National Lampoon it was, with Christopher Guest and Bill Murray. Kudos! On McDonald's: I went to try the McVeggie the other day (I was wondering how long it would take them to follow the BK Veggie) and was thoroughly disgusted. Apparently, the flak from the Hindus over the beef in the french fries (it's still in there, BTW) has made them especially paranoid. There were signs all over the place announcing that the McVeggie "may come in contact with animal products during the preparation process". I had assumed as much, but that really made it gross to me. I was going to just get a salad, but they all have chicken on them! When I asked the young lady (make that "middle-aged, illiterate, heavily-medicated lady") for a salad with "no meat", she stared at me as if I'd asked her to hand me a piano. Needless to say, I went elsewhere. On BK baguettes: Those "fresh baked" baguettes are delivered semi-baked and finished in a proofing oven, just like Subway. Nasty. I'd rather eat cat food.

I really don't enjoy McD's--McGriddle or anything else. It's like Trix--they're for kids. I do admit to going in for pit stops while traveling-my husband gets their cheap senior coffee. I had a biscuit once in the early a.m. and it was hot. I really just wanted to respond to a thread mentioning one of my all time favs--The FireSign Theatre We're all bozos on this bus!!!!!!!!!!

quote:Originally posted by JimInKy Does anyone know how McDonald's restaurants came to be called "Mickey D's"? My original guess was that it was tied to the "urban contemporary" trend of the mid-eighties, but I rethought that and developed the following thesis: It's all part of the movement that led to BK, KFC and other chain simplifications (I believe HoJo's was among the earliest). I think an apex was reached when Taco Bell was no longer even a name but a concept (Run for the Border). This trend is currently reversing itself in an odd way with "Kitchen Fresh Chicken". Kentucky Fried Chicken has imploded and reemerged, Phoenix-like as a completely different entity! Is there a food physicist out there who could explain this to a layman?

Compared to the McDonalds hamburger restaurants of the 50's, 60's, and 70's, when you really did know what you were getting when you went there (same with HoJo's and maybe a couple others), today's McD's is a chain that doesn't know who it is. Just about all of their food is different and not very good anymore. Who cares if it's more healthy than before if you can't stand to eat it? Even the Egg McMuffin, as mentioned above, has changed for the worse: they make their own english muffin in their own factory and it's way too chewy(read:tough as shoe leather) and completely tasteless. The company is reeling from criticism about everything from unhealthy ingredients and environmental irresponsibility to trying to satisfy every ethnic and regional demand on them. They've just lost it. They need to get it back...maybe by going back to basics. If they can. Frank

I agree about the taste. Hate to use this expression, but it's all been "dumbed down" in the sense that the "taste" of almost all of McD's items is essentially zero. Frank

I tried the McGriddle TWICE.. YIKES!!! The first time on a whim when they first came out and it was pretty good. The second time it tasted worse than dog food. It's like just about every other new FF item, it is "fair" when it comes out and goes quickly downhill once the newness wears off. I will admit a weakness for McDonald's plain old cheeseburger... something about those freeze dried onions I guess. BTW, does anyone up here have any feedback on a regional chain we have called Cook-Out? We prefer them over all the other chains we have tried. Dennis
