Meatball Grinder

Nothing like an Italian Meatball Sub "Grinder" if your in the hallway between Bridgeport and New Haven Ct, Hoagie to the rest. Some of the best meal and Grinders have been sitting at the kitchen table of a friends house, with his Mom saying "Come on Manga, Manga" your getting to thin. I have had the best Eggplant Parm, Homemade meatball, Sausage and pepper grinders. When I miss the old days, I get to making my own subs at home. This is a Meatball Grinder I made last week for lunch, it tasted as good as my buddy Rocco's mom made............

    Why is it that in Bridgeport they call hot subs grinders? I had to correct my West Taft Avenue wife all the time.
     
    But despite your Bridgeport name for that meatball sub, it looks amazingly delicious.

    Michael, There was a Bakery not to far from Jerry's Apizza, up Madison Ave behind the jail, that made and sold Grinder rolls. They were small Italian crusty rolls about the same size as a Mexican Bolillo roll. These rolls were to die for, crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. WE used them for all the hot grinders sandwiches and for a good Italian Salami and provolone sandwich.......................I know for sure you lost the fight about the Grinder rolls to the gal from West Taft Ave, she would have kicked your butt, when she knew she was right...........The Bridgeport gal's would never take that from a Milford Preppy eating a Frisbie Pie.............................pnwc

    I actually clicked on this thread because I thought there was now a new piece of equipment specifically for grinding meatballs. Great looking sandwich Chef!

In Pennsylvania, the term grinder refers to a sandwich that has been heated. In eastern Massachusetts a grinder is a toasted sub, for example the sub is toasted in a pizza oven.
     
    Michael. The East Coast is all about bread, I wish I still had access to these Bakeries. I remember walking up a block from my home to pick up fresh baked Rye Bread "to hot to slice" Italian bread hot out of the oven. We knew what time the bread came out of the oven, doesn't get any better than that. Hard rolls are another item that the bakery sold in the hundreds.

    I was watching a video on youtube on the preparation of meatball & Steak subs from Sonny's Famous Hoagies in Hollywood, Fl. yesterday. What interested me in the preparation was the raw vegetable ingredients that appear to include onions, celery with leaves,carrots was pureed with the tomato sauce using what would appear to be an inudustrial food mill into a raw sauce that's cooked afterwards. Not what I expected or the carrots & celery. This vid is worth watching for the entire process including making the meatballs.

    PNW Chef-- I sure wish I could get the great Italian bread available around New Haven. And the rye and corn rye, too. And then there are those fantastic hard rolls. Sheesh!
