Mellow Mushroom?

Can anyone in the know share your opinions of the Mellow Mushroom pizza chain? We have one coming to our area and I was just looking for some feedback. Thanks.

haven't been to one in a few years, but always liked them. they get a thumbs up from me for having more than the usual toppings (artichoke hearts, spinach, fresh basil, avocado, fresh garlic...) and somewhat funky one-of-a-kind spaces (no corporate stamp).

I've been to the one in C-ville, VA several times.  Decent atmosphere, a lot of funky toppings, and better than average pizza.  Good, but nothing earthshaking.

QCrazy, I grew up in Rock Hill, and MM is the best chain in the state.  We used to eat it on trips to Atlanta when we were little kids, and though it's not as good as it was back then, it's still a worthy pie.    Chris

I started going to the very first MM back in the 70s when it was just one fun store. There were only 5-6 tables and employee watching was 1/2 the fun. Back then we didn't really have anything besides Pizza Hut, Village Inn, etc (can't even remember if there was Dominos) and here was a fun place that made pizza 1000X better than anywhere else.

Even after opening a few stores locally it stayed good. Maybe not AS good but good.

Then more folks started paying attention to making good pizza elsewhere and MM expanded more than they should have. I eat at one maybe 2X a year now, the most recent a couple of weeks ago. It's better than the other chains but still a tiny ghost of its former self.

Pretty much the response I expected but I thought I would ask. The sad thing is independent pizza is a rare thing where I live. As much as I love my regional fare I really wish I had more variety. Hey we do have a well established Greek community and the local independents are what make the chains bearable. Hey at least MM will be better than most else. The only independents I know of close to me are Stefano's Italian and Primo's Pizza in Florence. Primo's is pretty good but I haven't tried Stefano's but hear it's great. Thanks for the feedback folks.

The Mellow Mushroo here is heavily advertising a gluten free pizza. I tried it. Evidently the crusts come in frozen, as only one size is available. Each topping for the about 12 inch pie is $1.88. For that price I got three pieces of bell pepper. For another $1.88 I got  six tiny slices of pepperroni  Aside from the expense, it was awful.
My husband's (not gluten free) was just as bad. We won't go back.

It really is a shadow of its former self.  I enjoyed eating there in the late '80s.  I give them points for being fun, at least, and having stores that don't look like they were all built in the same factory.

In my opinion it is mediocre. I lived in Savannah Georgia for two and a half years from 2006 through the middle of 2008. Ate there probable a few dozen times. Ok pizza. Ok sandwiches. Nothing special. In Savannah Screaming Mimis has far superior pizza and sandwiches.

I've eaten at Mellow Mushrooms all over the south and I can vouch for the quality of the crust and the variety of the toppings. The calzones are absolutely glorious and the salads are very fresh. It may not be your local mom & pop, but it's still good food and a fun atmosphere.

I agree with the variety of toppings. The quality of crust? Not so much.  pb

They've been here in Atlanta longer than I have (and I've been here nearly 30 years now) and I've always enjoyed it - I'd say compare it to whatever local places you have at least.
I gave them points for putting up a framed copy of a Zagat review in one store that mentions the "hippie wannabe" staff who "act like they're doing you a favor." Funnier if you picture the old SNL sketch with Chris Farley as a housewife reading their reviews.

it started out as a hippe pizza place but you cant find hippes any more so it changed to a establishment type place that was in biz to
make money not make people happy.

Mellow Mushroom is the nearest pizza to where we live and we go occasionally.  The hand tossed crust alone makes it better than the large chains.  When we want quick filling comfort food, we often go to Mellow Mushroom.  This location has been open as a Mellow Mushroom (they acquired an existing pizza place) for nearly twenty years so they are pleasing enough customers.

First ran across MM last year when we were heading to NOLA. Stopped at the one in Tuscaloosa, AL and was impressed. They make a pretty good pie. When we got back, we found that they had opened one in our area, (Carmel, IN) and we've been there a number of time now. I like their products. Especially, the Kosmic Karma. And they have some decent pizza dough pretzels. They're certainly better than many chains and they do change up their menu on a decent time scale.

I can't speak about how they were when they first opened because we didn't have one then, but we've recently had two pizzas from their LEX, KY, location and were not disappointed.  We really liked the crust and choice of toppings.

I would much prefer the Mellow Mushroom.  It has always been a decent pizza and yes the combination of toppings can be kind of funky.

I like a combo of:  BBQ sauce, provolone, mushrooms, portobello, sun dried tomatoes, jalapenos, and either the turkey or jerk chicken or both

We don't have much to choose from here, and since we've discovered Mellow Mushroom we find it better than the local mom and pop in LEX re pizza.  It beats the other chains hands down.  Just my opinion.  We don't have much to choose from, and even if we did I think they make a very decent pizza.
