Many, many excellent places on my list.
Coletta's-their italian food is really good but go for the BBQ pizza and toasted ravioli! (Bartlett and N. Parkway locations)
Germantown Commissary-for BBQ ribs (in Germantown)
    Gridley's-for BBQ shrimp (several stores)
Rendezvous-for atmosphere and the loin (downtown)
Huey's-Burgers and fries (multiple locations, I like the midtown site best)
Gus Famous Chicken-spicy, crunchy and superior fried chicken. Be like a local and get a 40 to go with it! (again multiple locations but I like the riverside location best)
    Barksdale restaraunt-breakfast joint. Classic (Midtown)
Brother Juniper's-another breakfast joint (University of Memphis)
The Chinese Sub place, Super Sub Shop-near University of Memphis on Highland. Giant, cheap and tasty subs.
Automatic Slim's Tonga Club-finer dining, awesome. (downtown)
    Topps-for bbq sandwiches (several locations0
Cafe Ole-try the bcaon wrapped shrimp with spicy bbq sauce. Fantastic (mid-town)
    Memphis Pizza Cafe-great pizza
Boscoe's-brewpub with excellent food. Beer is very good.
Flying Fish (downtown)- fun and fried
Flying Saucer-beer, beer and more beer! (downtown)

I agree with Play 27's list and would add a few more suggestions. Fino's Italian Deli is on Madison and it will be an enjoyable experience. They have great sandwiches, soups and Italian dishes. It is informal and inexpensive. Also, if you are traveling on 1-40 through Jackson, TN. I would go to Latham's Barbecue off exit 83 north. The food is authentic and cooked over real wood not some machine. It is known as the best in west TN. It also is informal and inexpensive. I do not understand why the Stern's have not visited both of these establishments.

Are you interested in fine dining  or cauals country dining.  Do you like BBQ.  Where are you staying.  Do you have a car.  If not are you willing to take a cab.  If you are staying downtown here's a few suggestions.
I know you are interested in trying good Memphis BBQ. Here are the top choices.
        A & R Bar B Que @ 1802 Elvis Presley Blvd., Memphis, TN. 901 - 774 - 7444.
        http://www.aandrbbq.com/
        BBQ Shop @ 1782 Madison Ave., Memphis, TN. 901 - 272 - 1277.
        http://www.dancingpigs.com/
        Central BBQ @ 2249 Central Ave., Memphis, TN. 901 - 272 - 9377.
        Charlie Vergo's Rendezvous @ 52 S. Second St., Memphis, TN. 901 - 523 - 2746.
        http://www.hogsfly.com/
        Cozy Corner @ 745 N. Parkway, Memphis, TN. 901 - 527 - 9158.
        http://www.cozycornerbbq.com/
        Interstate BBQ @ 2265 S. Third St., Memphis, TN. 901 - 775 - 2304.
        http://www.interstatebarbecue.com/
        Neely's BBQ @ 670 Jefferson St., Memphis, TN. 901 - 521 - 9798.
        http://www.neelysbbq.com/
        One and Only BBQ @ 1779 Kirby Pkwy., Memphis, TN 901 - 751 - 3615.
        http://www.oneandonlybbq.com/
        Paynes BBQ @ 1762 Lamar Ave., Memphis, TN. 901 - 272 - 1523.
The BBQ Shop and One and Only are my favorites but Payne's is famous for their pulled pork sandwich.
If you stay on Highway 78 when you get to Memphis, TN Highway 78 will become Lamar Avenue. Payne's is on Lamar.
Go to Arcade for outstanding breakfast. Go to Uncle Lou's for good fried chicken. Try some Memphis tamales at Mallory's or Hattie's. Fino's is good southern Italian. Go to Dino's for good breakfast, lunch or dinner.
        Arcade Restaurant @ 540 South Main St., Memphis, TN 901 - 405 - 4058.
        http://www.arcaderestaurant.com/
        Uncle Lou's Fried Chicken @ 3633 Millbranch Road, Memphis, TN 901 - 332 - 2367.

        Mallory South Memphis Grocery @ 9 W Mallory Avenue, Memphis, TN 901 - 775 - 2135.

Really the only place left in town that hasn't been completely overrun by tourists and people on this forum is the Orange Mound Grill http://www.commercialappeal.com/news/2003/nov/07/orange-mound-grill-has-half-century-of-tradition/
And a second location recently opened http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z9x_MCKxSAM

Walk around Beale Street in downtown Memphis, TN and visit the joints. Go in B B King's and Dyer's Burgers. Walk around inside The Peabody Hotel for a drink maybe and then The Rendevous for some BBQ across the street from The PB. There are some nice restaurants in the area including Felicia Suzanne's for fine dining at dinner, McEwen's for fine dining, Restaurant Iris for fine dining at dinner only, Automatic Slims for drinks and bar food, Gus' World Famous Fried Chicken and South of Beale for good bar dining.
            Felicia Suzzane's @ 80 Monroe Ave., Memphis, TN 901 - 523 - 0877.
            http://www.feliciasuzanne.com/
            McEwen's on Monroe @ 122 Monroe Ave., Memphis, TN 901 - 527 - 7085.

            Restaurant Iris @ 2146 Monroe Ave., Memphis, TN 901 - 590 - 2828.
            http://www.restaurantiris.com/
            Automatic Slim's @ 83 South 2nd St., Memphis, TN 901 - 525 - 7948.

I really do like Rendevous despite many tourists.  I also like The Butcher Shop (downtown location more than Germantown) for a reasonably priced steak.

Great suggestions!!! Thanks so much!  We are staying at the Memphis Marriot on Thousand Oaks BLVD. and we will be in our vehicle. We are mainly looking for great BBQ in a safe area. Never been to Memphis so we have absolutely no idea. I have Dyers and the Arcade on my list of definites.

Just ate at Four Way Grill in December.

Still very friendly and the food is good.  Here is my plate of smothered chicken, cabbage and mac & cheese.

                          Okay, we have decided on:
                          Neeley's BBQ (East)
                          The Arcade
                          Kooky Canuck
                          Bob's Barksdale
                          and last but not least.....
                          Dyer's : )
Thanks again for all the great suggestions!
