quote: Great Article... Labor Day week I intend to visit 6 or 7 coney shops in the Detroit area over a two day period and try one at each shop and determine which is the best.

Be prepared, wanderingjew. Be very prepared! American, Lafayette, National Coney Island are just the "tip of the iceberg" as far as metro Detroit Coney Island restaurants go. There are a couple of dozen other, local, coney places that have their own special ambiance; and passionate boosters, too. Bring your appetite!

I'm surprised Jane, Michael, Sue, Bruce, Stephen or Billyboy haven't made tracks thru some of the authentic coney stands in Detroit... But, I'm a patient man, I can wait for their awesome reports! Yup.. Sitting here waiting...

Boy, do I know that, I probably won't be going to National (been there before) and I've been to Lafayette but do plan to return there, I also intend to try American, Senate, Kerby, Athens, Leo's and I think the other place is George's? I can't see myself doing more than 3 or 4 coneys at a time.

It's funny how some locales end up choosing another to name their dogs. In Detroit they sell Coneys - in NE upstate NY, especially around Plattsburg, they sell Michigans - Clare & Carl's being my favorite.

Besides the coney hot dogs, try the loose hamburger..it's definitely different than anything you've tried anywhere else. Another winner is what Leo's calls a "Coney Special"....it's a hot dog covered with loose hamburger AND coney island chili, as well as the usual mustard and onions. Other Coney's have it but it goes by different names at each one.

I was just up to visit the kids and I stopped at Leo's in Brighton and found their coney's and sauce to my liking. Good snap to the dogs, sauce held up, not runny and had a nice spiciness to it. I'll definately add it to my list. Is the George's the one that is Aubrun Hills?

This is a coincidence.....I will be in Detroit next weekend. I was planning on stopping in at Lafayette and American for coneys. Maybe I will take some pictures and write a review or two.

I think the one on Opdyke in Auburn Hills is a single branch, independant place. It's in a small strip mall that also houses Fran O'Briens Maryland Crab House (across from the Auburn Pontiac dealership).

This time it's gonne be pure Coneys- Kind of a "Coney Smackdown" to see which one is the best.

UncleVic- Just wanted to let you know I'm not going to Detroit this weekend afterall. With my team (Penguins) being in the NHL conference finals, I would have missed two games had I went. I have suffered through too many losing years to miss games now! I do plan on getting to Detroit later this Spring and eating some Coneys.
