Mickey Rooney's Star-B-Q Mon, 02/26/07 9:53 AM (permalink)
A photo in one of my barbecue books ("BBQ USA", page 375) shows the actor Mickey Rooney wearing an apron and chef's hat featuring a "Mickey Rooney's Star-B-Q" logo. He looks like he could be anywhere from his 40s to his late 50s, which would put the timeframe somewhere in the '60s or '70s.

I did a little online research but all I could find was a single mention that "barbecue eateries" were one of the business ventures he's dabbled in over the years. Does anyone remember this restaurant? If I had to guess at a location I'd say California because of Hollywood, but I have no way of knowing that for sure. Thanks!

Pretty sure he lived in Florida in the early 70's. I played Little League with his son. I remember him being at a few games. I do not recall the restaurant though.

        Mickey Rooney's Star-B-Cue? 60s/70s?

Would make sense, he had ready access to all the washed-out stars you could Cue back then.

When I was a kid (mid 1970's), there was a "Mickey Rooney's Weenie World" In Massapequa, Long Island. It was in a strange flying saucer shaped building. It didn't last long, and was replaced by several restaurants, one of which was a pretty good gyro shop. Anyone know if this weird building is still there?

There was a Mickey Rooney's STAR-B-Q on Wilcox near Selma Avenue across from the main Hollywood 90028 post office back in the 70's, I think it later turned into a Houston's, but not the Houston's that are around now. Looking at google maps, it appears it is either now an empty lot or a place on the corner called Shin's.
I don't remember it being that name for a long time, and I don't think I ever ate there, even though it was very close to where I worked back then.

That Houston's was my favorite place to eat during 1978 - 1979 when I worked on Highland Ave just south of Willoughby.
