Military Chow UPDATED, How do our troops survive on this? Sat, 07/14/12 11:33 AM (permalink)

I have been swapping stories of the "Old Army" with my 1st LT son who is now deployed to Afghanistan. He had never heard of "C-Rations" the packaged food we endured when we were "out-in-the-field" back in my service time (early 1960's) I had never seen an MRE until I bought some for emergency camping type food some years ago, and found them to be a major improvement over the old canned "C-Rats".
However apparently today's Soldier has more finely tuned tastes than we did. He says the MRE's are not in use except when out in the boonies, that regular Mess Hall service is the normal activity, even at his "FOB" (Forward Operating Base) where he oversees a Pakistani Border Checkpoint.
Here is yesterdays (Saturday's) dinner of Afghani Surf & Turf.

Hope he can get more than one plate, Al.  That does not look like enough food for a soldier.

Here's best wishes for a safe and happy return home.

The photo and back story remind me of an old M*A*S*H episode where one of the patients turns out to be a skilled chef who takes the mess hall to heights it had never before seen, only to be commandeered as the personal chef to a general who happened to stop by at mealtime.

Once on a port call to Kodiak the ship got a deal on some of those Snow Crab legs. I can't believe there were guys who turned their nose up at it.
