Milwaukee Burger at 157 Water from the 80's? Sat, 04/26/08 2:54 PM (permalink)
Does anyone remember a place back in the 80's at 157 Water in Milwaukee that had a great burger? I can't remember the name though the tall skinny building is there; you walked up about four steps to the front door and the bar was on the right after entering with booths on the left.

First Street Wharf? An unusual item was that the floor sloped, so at one end of the bar you sat at a normal height, but you gradually were shifted downward the farther away from the door you sat. I'd never heard of cajun, creole or New Orleans cooking before heading into this former lesbian bar. Their French Quarter Tea was a forerunner to today's more common Long Island tea. It became an antique shop and then was razed for the condo's that occupy the entire block now.

A bit closer to Wisconsin Ave. on Water was Someplace Else. They had great burgers and entertainment and was one of Milwaukee's premier bars until a 5 alarm fire burned it completely down. It had relocated, along with the River Queen from a location a few blocks south when the freeway was elongated, just a block away from Milwaukee's Public Market. Never rebuilt, it is now a parking lot.

First Street Wharf might be it as that name rings a bell. Milwaukee food is turning cookie cutter including burgers.

The Hideaway, Solly's, Mazo's, Night Owl, Sobelmans, Slim's, McBob's, Elsa's, Beer Belly's, Grainger's and The Harp are just a few good burger choices, plus Kewpee Lunch is just a short drive away.
