Mineral Point, Wisconsin - Sat, 07/25/09 2:47 PM ( #1 )
My mother and I are considering a day trip from Chicago sometime in the next 2 weeks.  Mineral Point, WI intrigues me.  I've been looking at the Mineral Point website http://www.mineralpoint.com/lodging_dining/restaurants.html , and there are several restaurants that interest me.

Has anyone eaten at any of these restaurants?

Where is the best place to get a Cornish pasty?  I've heard Red Rooster Cafe mentioned, but I've also read some mixed reviews on TripAdvisor.  Are there any other places not listed above that anyone would recommend?

Also, what's the name of that wonderful cheese store/tavern on the square in Monroe, just in case we decide to head back via Monroe?

Thank you in advance for your help!

Great burger at the Midway, but it's just an old fashioned tavern.

Here's the place in Monroe...http://www.baumgartnercheese.com/  Also, I would check out New Glarus which is down that way. There is a great Swiss place called the Glarner Stube. Here you go...I think there is better eating in New Glarus.  http://www.glarnerstube.com/

Cornish pasties are tasty, sort of like a hot pocket. Just don't expect to fall in love with them and crave them. That might be true if you grew up where they are the norm and moved away. They are good but just a wee bland. It's been several years since I've been to Mineral Point and I don't remember any of your restaurants. I do agree with Pancho about the Glarner Stube. You may also want to have a beer at Tofflers in New Glarus, the tavern run by our Roadfooder Kirsby.

Thanks for the tips.  I have nothing against New Glarus, but, as they say, I've "been there-done that."  Thanks for the link to Baumgartner's Cheese Store.

Any more input on, specifically, Mineral Point eats?

m2violin -

I'm no help on Mineral Point, but I just happened to have pasties for lunch today after a trip to Madison's farmer's market.

Myles Teddy Wedgers is a Madison institution, since 1976 according to the window.  I grabbed lunch there for my family.  My wife had the Chicken Pie, which was like a chicken pot pie in a pasty pastry.  My son and I had the Top Layer Steak pasty.

I found them both to be rather bland, they really needed salt and pepper.  We were eating on a park bench, so didn't have seasoning handy.  I was disappointed that the beef pasty did not include rutabaga.  I think rutabaga is mandatory in an authentic pasty.  I also like to top them with gravy, which wasn't available at Miles T's.

Good luck with your Mineral Point trip.  We all look forward to finding out about your Roadfood discoveries.

I've also wanted to go to Mineral Point for a while -- the whole miner history of Wisconsin (I think that's why they're called Badgers), is very interesting to me. Bummer that everyone is saying that pasties are bland--they really look like they'd be good. Please report back!

We stayed at the Brewery Creek B&B and had dinner there last summer during a 24 hour quickie getaway.
The dinner we had was quite nice. We had the coffe crusted steak, and the bourbon galzed steak(which was the better choice).  The coffe steak, while it sounded nice, was actually too much "grounds".  To do this preparation correctly one should use instant coffee (IMHO) so that it dissolves, or turkish coffee so it's more of a flour...
But the steaks were tender, and cooked to our order correctly and the frites were wonderful.
The home brewed beers were amazing!
The B&B itself was very romantic and cozy altho the breakfast part was more of a continental breakfast, and not very impressive.
The night prior we had gone to The American players theatre for a show outdoors which was awesome.
The next morning we drove up to Frank Lloyd Wrights Taliesin which was beyond amazing, and truly worthwhile.
After that we stopped in Spring Green at the General Store for lunch, which was very tasty and lots of fun fun shopping with interesting things that you don't often see. I recco it very strongly.

If you are really in the mood for something completely different, you will also be around the corner from the House on the Rock which is very very fun, but be sure to leave yourself PLENTY of time, because it truly is a  wonderful time sink.

Cafe Four for pizza!  I'm addicted to this place and so is everyone I've taken here.  They have an awesome patio and a good wine/beer list too.
