At most Chicago cafes that meant free dessert. Happy Birthday was sung to our table in the forest Caf, with mechanical animals hooting, or waving their arms behind us. And in the Smith & Wollensky Steakhouse the German boys took it on themselves to sing. In the Hard Rock caf, Kristy, a Chinese exchange student, stood on a table and was sung to by the complete Chicago eaterie with Jimi Hendrix's Les Paul some feet behind her.
