Local Woman Envisions Mobile Breastfeeding Truck
July 6, 2011 11:23 PM
Reporting David Highfield

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — A local artist and teacher at Carnegie Mellon University has come up with an idea to support mothers who are harassed for nursing in public.

Jill Miller envisions something she calls “The Milk Truck.” She wants to buy an ice cream truck and outfit it with a giant breast on the roof.
When a woman is made to feel uncomfortable or told to leave a public place for breastfeeding, she could contact “The Milk Truck.” The truck would respond and park in front of the restaurant or other establishment, along with followers of the program through Twitter and Facebook.
Project manager Tara McElfresh says they will lay down a rug, set up chairs under an awning on the side of the truck, and if the mother still needs to, she can nurse outside in an environment of support.

McElfresh says she’s heard stories of women who have encountered problems breastfeeding in public in Pittsburgh, including a woman who says she was told to leave a restaurant in Squirrel Hill.
Miller is trying to raise $10,000 to make the project a reality through pledges at a site called Kickstarter.com. She’s already raised $4,300 and gotten responses from around the world.
Once completed, the truck is scheduled to be part of an exhibit starting in September at the Andy Warhol Museum.

McElfresh says the truck will also make appearances at events.

Miller says the truck is supposed to be an attention-grabber when it responds to a call for help.
“Thought the nursing mother created a spectacle? Meet ‘The Milk Truck!’” she said.

Im all for being a woman and a mother, as i am one. But theres no reason you cant take 20 minutes out of your time to go in the restroom or the car. Especially at a restuarant, i dont want to be out with my husband and kids eating and see that. And really a truck with a gaint breast? It raises another point, is a womans body not sacred? Its as bad as the movies with nudity every other sence. Some people just dont want to see that.

You go eat in some dirty a$$ bathroom next time you are hungry. Or a car when the weather is in an extreme. You dont want to see it? Simply avert your eyes to another direction. People like you make breastfeeding a big deal. There is NOTHING to see. I see more boobs at Kennywood, Sandcastle and the simply going to the mall. Ever hear of a bikini? I see more boobs in a bikini then I do from a breastfeeding mother.

leave it to a teacher/artist to come up with a dumba$$ idea like that.  She will open up and realize there is no market and then petition the government so subsidise this idea

Some ramblings of an old codger:

Why is it that the younger generations seem no longer to value privacy, but instead feel they must publicize, broadcast or flaunt to the whole world every little thing they do, when the whole world really doesn't care to hear or see what they are doing.

The best example of this are the people who use Twitter to relate every moment of their lives, as if these moments are of world-shaking importance.  Most of us don't even care to hear about or see the antics of celebrities, unless it is something we can laugh about or make fun of.  Are all these people so insecure that they must now get the approval (or disapproval) of everything they do?

I have a friend on FB that is a stay at home mom, hubby works TWO full time jobs so she can stay up til 3-4 am chit chatting on FB, publicizing every thing that goes on in her life and her childrens lives, constant pics of the kids at Wal Mart, the park, picking their noses, being stalked by someone, blabbing about her adult sons baby mama drama, update, I'm at the Dr for female problems, I'm headed to get some beer, I took a ****..... ect. Seems that allot of people these days just don't know how to censor what comes out of their mouth, or weather anyone else gives a phuck!....I read because it's like watching a train wreck, and I can't look away!

This is exactly what happens when an individual is not breast fed. The desire to help other breast feed is so overwhelming they want to "build" a big milker and travel around the USA screaming "Breast Milk Here"...kinda of like the ballpark vendors scream "Beer Here".
                     Will she stock breast milk?
Will she freeze it into Ice (milk) pops?
WHO will help her collect the breast milk should she decide to stock it?
Will there be a sign up sheet to help in this endeavor?

I have seen women discretely breast feeding their children in in public. I have also seen a woman "whip it out" in full view of everyone to breast feed her kid (and then she got pissed because my then brother-in-law asked if he could have a turn next). I support the right for mother to breast feed. But I have the right to not have to see someones boobs hanging out there... breast feeding or not. I have also learned that I have no rights as everyone else's rights supersedes mine.

I am appalled at the thought of such a business. I agree with 6 star-what happened to privacy?Certain things are just not meant to do in public. While I understand it is a natural occurance, my Mom never breast fed in public. If she was at someones home, she was invited into a different room.Plus, as a Mother, she pretty much knew our feeding schedules, and stayed home during those times. To me, that is the point-being a Mom and knowing your childrens schedule. And Lorna hit the nail on the head-our rights are superceding all others. I do not care HOW discreet they are-it is still breast feeding in public.

Hold it, will the truck still sell ice cream from it?

Obviously some one needs attention there. She will "milk" it until the cash cow is gone.

I think we're ignoring the real issue here. Did you see the comment copied from the original post from poster "Sara?" She said "Ever hear of a bikini? I see more boobs in a bikini then I do from a breastfeeding mother."
