Monical's - worth trying? Fri, 08/12/05 8:19 AM (permalink)

I'm going to be overnighting in Champaign IL in a couple of weeks and am thinking about trying Monical's pizza. I've driven past a number of their locations over the years but have never stopped, so I think it's about time. Any opinions? Thanks!

I have had Monical's a few times, though never at a location in Champaign. I like it quite a bit. The crust is thin and crisp, and they are not afraid to add a few spices into the sauce. Probably won't be the best pizza you have ever had, but in Central Illinois, you likely won't find much better.

I had Monical's many years ago and thought it was awful however I recently had one with the nephews in Peoria and thought it very good, even being generous with the extra garlic I asked for. I don't know they vary from store to store, I would imagine they use the same supplier for sauces and such.

I wouldn't bother with Monical's. There's much beter in Champaign-Urbana. My personal favorite pizza from the area is from Manzella's on First Street in Champaign. It doesn't open until 4 (IIRC) and is a sit-down Italian joint with take-out service.

Other notable pies were had at the Village Inn and Garcia's.

Manzella's...I'll have to remember that. Thanks to all for the opinions!

Living in Champaign, I just felt I had to weigh in on this. Monical's is sort of a local tradition. It's okay, but I think it used to be better. The chain mentality affected the food. iF you HAVE to try monical's, go south 10 miles on Neil Street (Rt 45), and go to the one in Tolono. It's the original, and I think the quality of the food is better, and a lot of locals think so, too. They also are the only Monical's that has Pepsi instead of Coke. Or, Ralph Monical started another restaurant called Zelma's. He is very hands-on with this place, and I think he regrets selling out twenty-some years ago. He could only go to so many Cub games. Watching the Cubs play, that would be depressing.
