Morton's coming to Brooklyn

Downtown Brooklyn, never known as a destination for chains (other than fast food) will soon become home to Morton's, which announced that it will open in a storefront location at the Marriott in late 2008. This is an interesing development. Brooklyn has a few mom-and-pop steak places, but apart from Luger's in Williamsburg, they are in the nabes like Bay Ridge. In fact, just a few blocks away is the restaurant row of Smith Street, with one storefront chef-owned place after another. Morton's will be opening just around the corner from Fulton Street location where the venerable Gage and Tollner struggled for years, before finally closing about 3 years ago, partly because people did not want to be in d/t Brooklyn after dark. A TGI Friday's, which opened in its place, did not last long. The Marriott, however, seems to do well. It gets conventions and out-of-town guests, and its own restaurant, which has a better-than-decent lunchtime buffet, seems to be thriving (although I have no idea how the dinner trade is doing). Meanwhile, new zoning has permitted construction of 40 story highrises to continue unabated, replacing derelict, but functional, 100-year-old 3 and 4 story structures with shops and small ethnic restaurants on the fringe blocks of the downtown, and foreclosing any possibility of the area's being redeveloped as an urban village. Seems like downtown Brooklyn is on the verge of being Disneyfied just like Manhattan, with consequences both good and bad.

This Morton's may wind up doing most of their business at lunch. Between Metrotech and the courts, there are many people who visit the area during the day. For dinner, they do have the advantage that there is a parking garage in the Marriott, and diners should be able to get a cab from the entrance to the Marriott. People from Brooklyn may be more liable to go to the Marriott than, say, someplace on downscale Fulton Street.

Well, lucky you! I've never had a bad meal at Morton's (D.C., Tyson's, Orlando, Dallas), something I can't say about Ruth's Chris(Arlington, VA; Scottsdale), and Smith & Wollensky(Dallas). They are consistently good and should do well on Brooklyn, the 5th. largest city in the country.

Texas Roadhouse has the best steaks/prime rib I believe.

The food is extra. And it's worth it.

You're off by about a thousand miles on both accounts, but it is a sit down restaurant. Morton's may not be the best steakhouse in any given city (in some cities, it's not even in the top 10), but it is a true steakhouse. Texas Roadhouse is a steakhouse in the way Olive Garden is Italian.

You live within 20 miles of two Morton's: Southfield and Troy. So, fatten your wallet (or make sure there is at least $200 left on a charge card), put on a jacket, and - as it is Detroit - carry an extra clip for your Glock. Enjoy!

Another earlier one opened with the sign "Welcome to Brooklyn - the fourth largest city in the country". I want to say "All in the Family", but that was set in Queens. Anyways, since that show, Houston passed Brooklyn in population.

Ah yes, the graffiti-covered subway cars. That sign seen in the clip from Welcome Back Cotter was a real sign. Welcome Back Cotter ran from 1975 to 1979.

For some reason I had it stuck in my brain that the sign was circa the Amos & Andy opening - Schlitz - the beer that made Milwaukee famous. (I better hit the Ginko Biloba; I'll be 60 January 4th.)! Thanks for the clip. Those graffitti'd trains reminded me of two summers I spent in the City teaching at Columbia, pre-Rudy. I had to go through seven doors with seven keys to get to my faculty living quarters on 119th & Amsterdam and Times Square reeked of urine.

I don't care much for Morton's. I went to the one in Baltimore once, and I much prefer the Prime Rib. If I lived in Brooklyn, I would probably want to go to Peter Luger's.

That said, the bacon-wrapped scallops and rib-eye tasted mighty good at Morton's, especially if I was a guest! Wild Turkey tastes the same at both joints, but the Prime Rib gives a more generous pour.
