Latest news for Chewing the Fat/So Can a Rat------------- Mr Lucky shed-you-alled for Aug 10th on TCM but at 2AM. How come the good ones are in the middle of the night ? And, what's with this Stephan Siegal nonsense, well I guess after a hard day's work you might be a little weak headed. Mar52 Where are You ? Oh yes Random Harvest---I remember reading the book with my back up against a bulkhead in the middle of the Pacific in 1945 heading for Okinawa-----didn't see the movie for years afterward but loved it green wore a plaid outfit and Ronald Coleman was always a favorite. Have not seen it since---gotta get it !! NC in IL ----White Christmas is the only musical you like---oy vey !!!!! (A little southern expression to make you feel at home--------------I think you must have been sniffing the white lightning again----White Christmas , WOW !!!! Inherit the wind ----Spence in a similar role to Mad, Mad, World---he sure could do anything. With a non-dancing Gene Kelly yet !!!!

To tell the truth, I've always thought that musicals are really dumb. One moment a guy's walking down the street, and the next he's jumping up on a fire hydrant and singing a song... and then the whole streetful of strangers joins in on a song that they've probably never heard before. Now THAT'S science-fiction!

Yeah musicals are dumb, but they are fun and it keeps a lot of otherwise un-employable people off the dole. Also sells a lot of tap shoes and flugelhorns. They are good for the economy. And the digestion------just relax and enjoy.

Nancypalooza Uncle Buck Red Dawn Roadhouse Unleashed (a new addition--it was on Sunday morning) An Affair to Remember North by Northwest Vacation and Christmas Vacation will think of more, of course Roadhouse- It's like looking in a tissue after you've sneezed. You know what's in there, but you look anyway. With so many better things in life to do, I can't believe I keep watching this movie whenever it comes on.

A little off topic but I hate that family comedies have become so watered down. I realized how great some of the old ones were when I finally shared a cold beer with my dad right before moving off to college. He slapped me on the back and ended the conversation with "good talk russ." haha.

Mar52--------you are too young to remember Toody and Muldoon ---two inept NY City cops ----but the name of the wacky 1/2 hour TV show was --------- -------------------"Car 54, Where Are You" and it had a musical beat-----SOOOOOO As I typed your name and said it in my mind, Mar 52 became Car 54 and the "Where Are You" just followed along right in sync. You now know the rest of the story.

Here are a few movies I ultimately wind up watching when channel surfing...this means I can cut in on the movies anywhere and watch the remainder..... 1. The Goonies 2. Independence Day 3. American President 4. 50 First Dates These aren't my favorites, but for some reason they have become my "go to flicks" bkk

the ancient mariner ... MBrooks----How could I forget The Producers and Springtime and all those old ladies ?? Hey, are you Mel Brooks ????????? ... I will never forget stumbling upon the original "The Producers" and being glued to the TV in awe of just what I was seeing! So completely politically incorrect it became funny! Classic comedy!

My list lines up with Ancient Mariner's for the most part. AM, if you like Captain Blood, how about The Seahawks? I'll add They Were Expendable. I watch it every time it comes on TCM. I guess it is because it is a war film about losing... unusual theme at the time. I second Cavandre's A Hard Day's Night too.

I just watched Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House for the umptyunth time on TCM this afternoon. It is a 1947 movie with Cary Grant and Myrna Loy. I once searched for the original book the movie was based on and could never find it. Then I had a client with little or no money wanting to renovate a small space for a used paperback bookstore in a retail/office building we were remodeling in downtown Minneapolis. I agreed to take on the assignment for the fee that she find me an original copy of the book. She, being in the field, came up with it in a day. This was in the pre-internet days circa 1980.

The 52 in mar52 is for 1952. It always bothered me that he grew up to be Herman Munster. Much better than My Mother the Car or I'm Dickens, He's Fenster.

I will never understand the enduring popularity of Gone with the Wind! I find it unbelievable that any woman could find the whimpering Ashley attractive, yet here we have two women absolutely devoted to him. And that Rhett would put up with the hell that Scarlett put him through for as long as he did makes no sense either.

I'm 2 years older than you, not much of a difference-we're both first wave baby boomers. When I was 7 and 8 years old my pops would always make me and my kid sister watch the Phil Silvers show aka Sgt Bilko with he and Mama because although we didn't always get all of the gags it was one of the few shows where one could see a Black person in the cast, although rarely having a speaking role, anywat there was Fred Gwyne before ooooh ooooh ooooooh Car 54 or the Munsters. In the early 60s, my parents would watch Car 54 with all 3 of us siblings, we were older and Car 54 made us laugh plus our heroe was none other than the poet laureate and proto type rapper Nipsy Russell whom our folks had comedy LPs of, they would look for him in all of those game shows he was on in the late 60s and 70s

Doug-----Olsen and Johnson's Hellzapopin was on Broadway for a long run before it became a movie----it was vaudeville---and great fun. And I hate Gone With The Wind also---must be NY that has jaded us. Dave ---re:Mr Blandings---I can imagine you in the part of the architect with the Harris tweed jacket with patches on the elbows, smoking a pipe and doing a great job. My favorite scene---and it helps to be in the business----has Myrna Loy explaining to the painting contractor exactly the colors she want's in all the rooms --- robin egg blue in the bedroom, a lovely yellow like a muted goldenrod, etc, etc.----he keeps nodding and saying Uh Huh---she walks away and his lead painter says what colors and the boss says---red, yellow and blue----it loses a lot in translation. Now before I forget---I have to add a few that I remembered in the middle of the night------sleeping alone causes strange thoughts to enter the mind----a vacuum attracts all sorts of things----- Dirty Dozen----seen dozens and dozens of times and enjoyed each and every one. Love the troop review by Sutherland----only time I rooted for Jimmy Brown (Giant fan here) The Magnificent 7------ great story (stolen from overseas), great cast, great music Bridge on the River Kwai----great story, great cast, great music (sounds familiar) Breaker Morant--- Boer War tragedy-----excellent The Man Who Would Be King-------Connery,Caine and Kipling ----3 winners City of Joy----just a good movie about Calcutta ------- Mr Smith Goes To Washington-----long before the Health care bill got there. March of the Wooden Soldiers----------every Christmas with the kids

Since someone chose to open that door I will say I am just a pre-baby boomer (born in first part of 1944 - hit my father on the head with a toy hammer when he came home from the war in 1945 I was told by my dad - over and over for decades!) Anyhow my earliest recollection of TV was in the early 50s - watching Amos 'n Andy, My Little Margie, Our Miss Brooks, Phil Silver, Sid Caesar, I Love Lucy, Ed Sullivan ...some others of similar ilk and nature. And when Buddy Holly came on the music scene I began my love affair with rock 'n roll music.

Pizza Nut--- Please don't segue off into the deep, dark jungles of TV. Veer back onto the "Road to Morocco" and "Utopia" with Bing and Bob and the Sarong Lady Dorothy Lamour------we don't need no stinkin' TV shows. Just came back from the library where I was told I am 200th on line for WEB Griffin's new book-----fikkerin out with paper, pencil and calculator 200 x 2 weeks is 400 weeks which is the same as 8 years ----so I will be looking at all these movies again and again. And liking them again and again.

As I grow older I watch less movies and TV and listen to more music and actually participate in real life somewhat more than I had back when I was working and had a normal schedule. When you have to work you do not have a whole lot of free time to do what you damn well please. Since the Internet came along though it has become almost as intoxicating as TV for so many, myself along with the hordes of others frolicking here frequently. I will say this - I never thought I would be buying so much stuff on the Internet worldwide - and saving myself lots of time and money and energy. But you better know what exactly you are buying when you buy stuff from another part of the world. I just got me a casette in the mail when I was certain I had ordered a CD from Austria, of some Swiss yodeling music. Doggone it! Back to the movies...............

Nancypalooza You know what makes 'An Affair to Remember' really great? Deborah Kerr. Because I tried the Warren Beatty/Annette Bening remake and it just falls flat. But between her falling in love with Cary Grant even though you know she knows better and that whole speech at the end--'I was looking up, it was the nearest thing to heaven'--that whole movie is on her tiny back. She's so good in it you almost forget it's Cary Grant on the other side, and that is not easy to do. My five year old nephew discovered 'Laurel & Hardy' at his grandparents' this summer and can be heard giggling in his living room at the DVDs. His mom calls us and holds up the phone so we can listen to him giggle. If you like 'An Affair to Remember' keep checking TMC schedule for 'Love Affair". Not the Warren Beatty/Annette Bening version but the 1939 one with Irene Dunn & Charles Boyer. I love Irene Dunn & take about making your toes curl..... Charles Boyer is so handsome & that accent!!!
