Movies I watch every time they are on Wed, 07/29/09 2:09 PM (permalink)
I just watched " Bringing Up Baby "  for the 212th time, more or less.  I will watch it again the next time I see it listed.

I don't know why, but it's like listening to a favorite song I guess- I just like it.

And there are others in that same category----seen 'em, love 'em, can't wait to see 'em again----Am I nuts ?

For Instance-----

---Anatomy of a Murder--Jimmy Stewart, Arthur O'Connell and what's his name Scott who played Patton
---Mr Robert's----what's this crud about no movie tonight ?
---The Train ---Burt lancaster against Paul Scofield
---The Mission-----DeNiro and jeremy Irons down South America Way
---Casablanca---- Play it again Bogey and Ingrid
---Notorious-------Ingrid again but with Cary Grant of "Bringing Up Baby" fame.
---A Bridge Too Far-----got so/so reviews, but I love it
---Midway-------Love to see the USA win
---Singing in the Rain------Joyful, I'm dancing and singing in the living room.
---Cap't Blood/Dawn Patrol & Robin Hood-----Errol Flynn fighting his way into my heart.
---The Thin Man----I like that high class Park Ave. stuff---Mix me a Martini Nicky
---Out of the Past----made me a Mitchum fan for life
---Mr Blandings Builds His Dream House------and it is still there in Greenwich Ct
---The Great Escape-----one mo'time
---The Clock----Just has great memories for me---Judy and Robert Walker and grand Central
---The Pirate---Gene Kelly at his best, with Judy-----no clock and no Walker though
---She Wore a Yellow Ribbon/The Quiet Man & Red River------John Wayne and the Usual Suspects

I have missed others, but if you have gotten this far you're one tough Hombre there Pilgrim !!!!!

    I always end up watching;

    Bridges of Madison County
    Steel Magnolias
    The Wedding Singer
    Dumb and Dumber
    Smokey and the Bandit
    Cannonball Run

And I always end up watching all the Christmas movies every year no matter how many times I have seen them.

My other half also always has to watch Duel and The Hitcher everytime they are on.

Some movies you just can't get sick of no matter how hard you try.

        One I never miss is
THE FINAL COUNTDOWN a Time-warp Military thing with Kirk Douglas and David Jansen. The book has a chapter that carries on beyond the end of the movie and explains a lot of the behaviors seen but not explained in the film.

Others I watch over and over
          Midway
         The Wild One
         In Harm's Way
         Vacation
         The Jerk
         L A Story
         Grease
         G I Blues
not many others get repeat viewing from me.

When it comes to Sci-Fi, it is definite 2001 (1968), directed by Mr. Stanley Kubrick.

                              http://en.wikipedia.org/w...A_Space_Odyssey_(film)

I watched 2001 in the year 1968, for the very first time, as a 12 years young boy, and I was deeply impressed, this movie changed my personal life.

I have seen it for sure more than 300 times, still fascinated, it is a masterpiece, perhaps the best movie ever...

                              R.I.P. Stanley Kubrick

                              Michael

P.S. If you have the chance, to watch 2001 in a cinema, on a wide cinema screen, do it!, you will be speechless...

These aren't the only ones, some of those listed also make my list.

                                  Grosse Point Blank
                                  Unforgiven
                                  Tombstone
                                  The Commitments
                                  That Thing You Do
                                  Groundhog Day
(IMO possibly the best film of its era)

There are more, that's all for now.

You know what makes 'An Affair to Remember' really great?  Deborah Kerr.  Because I tried the Warren Beatty/Annette Bening remake and it just falls flat.  But between her falling in love with Cary Grant even though you know she knows better and that whole speech at the end--'I was looking up, it was the nearest thing to heaven'--that whole movie is on her tiny back.  She's so good in it you almost forget it's Cary Grant on the other side, and that is not easy to do.

My five year old nephew discovered 'Laurel & Hardy' at his grandparents' this summer and can be heard giggling in his living room at the DVDs.  His mom calls us and holds up the phone so we can listen to him giggle.

Nancy----I loved that little Lady who played his mother or grandmother back home in the "old country" she was a love.  And the shawl ----but you are right Deborah was great, but then she always was----from a "hot babe" on an island beach with Burt Lancaster, to a lovely Nun on an island beach with Robert Mitchum---from a English Queen to an Australian Sundowner------

but she never once appeared in a Laurel and Hardy extravaganza--see what a fine mess you've got me in now.

Joe Dirt, Big and the Wedding Singer. I don't even like the Wedding Singer but it sucks me in every time. Might have something to do with the co-star.

In my case, there are hundreds of movies that fall into this category. I've seen some of them as many as 25 or 30 times. I'll just list my favorite film in each genre...

Crime film: White Heat ( "Top of the world, Ma!!" )
Western: The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
                                                          Comedy: Blazing Saddles
                                                          Drama: Coal Miner's Daughter
Musical: White Christmas ( the ONLY musical that I care about )
Holiday: Miracle on 34th Street ( the original, of course )
                                                          Animated: Sleeping Beauty
                                                          Horror: Bride of Frankenstein
American science-fiction: The Day the Earth Stood Still ( again, the original )
Japanese science-fiction: Godzilla, King of the Monsters ( the very first and the very best )

I have all of these in my DVD library, along with several hundred others, so I don't have to depend on AMC and the other networks in order to see my favorites.
