Mr. D's Donuts in danger?

Mr. D.'s Donuts is an institution in La Crosse, Wisconsin. It survived Krispy Kreme, which hightailed it out of town earlier this year, but now it may be in danger from the local government. http://www.lacrossetribune.com/articles/2006/03/28/news/00lead.txt I love Art Lotz's comment about political suicide: "They like my donuts a lot more than they like your government." That's a Roadfood call to arms if I've ever heard one!

"Members ate D's donuts during the meeting" Here's one of those only-in-LaCrosse tragic/ironic stories about D's: Back in the early 80's I guess it was, a couple college girls got run down by a hit&run driver as they crossed the street after stopping by D's window (where they serve just-baked donuts, mostly to boozed up young folks, in the middle of the nite.) As I recollect, one of them wound up dead. The crucial clue to the crime were the D's donuts embedded in the grille of Ray Lichte's daughter's car. This event marked the end of the much-hated-by-donut-eating-young-folks Lichte's tenure as police chief.
