Mr. Hotdog - Las Vegas

While in Vegas we dined at some wonderful restaurants but the highlite of the trip was a discovery I made tucked away in a strip mall on Flamingo Dr.. Mr Hotdog was the name and hotdogs was their game. A wonderful collection of hotdogs with regional twists. The New York dog came with a wonderful onion sauce that one critic claimed was better than Gray's Papaya in NYC. There was also the Chicago dog...(missing the poppy seed bun however) that was nice. A slaw dog which takes after the Varsity in Atlanta and then a local creation called the Rebel dog (UNLV Rebels) that came with a strip of bacon and chilli on top. My partner tried the special that day...a Mexican dog that included refried beans, cheese, salsa, onions and peppers. It resembled a mound of nachos. You can see the menu here: http://www.cuisinecapers.com/archives/mrhotdogmenu1.html

I've passed this place many times. I'll be in Vegas in 2 weeks, so might have to stop in and give it a try this time. Thanks for the review.

MadisonDining, Once upon a time in Madison, there was a hot dog stand called Dog Eat Dog. They sold Best's Kosher hot dogs on steamed Gonella poppy seed buns. Unfortunately, their standard dog(8 to a pound)sold for $3.00+tax. Way too expensive, especially for UWM students. Next, they expanded to a second location off State Street. They're no longer in business. To our knowledge, Madison still lacks an original Chicago hot dog establishment that sells Vienna Beef products. One of the goals in our original business plan was to vend Vienna Beef hot dogs & Polish on the front steps of the Capital(Madison)during the summer. CSD-Born in Chicago, raised in Chicago, moved to Wisconsin(90 minutes from Madison), selling original Vienna Beef hot dogs and Polish on steamed S.Rosen poppy seed buns with the real Chipico condiments.

CSD, You are correct, Dog Eat Dog is no more. My favorite place was south of town called Presto's. They served GREAT grilled Vienna Chicago Dogs. Unfortunately they too went out of business. It amazes me that a place specializing in Tubular Meat has not made it in Madison. I guess that's due to the Tofu-PETA-Vegan-Liberal bent of the majority of the population. Whats a Republican Dog Lover suppose to do? I guess thats why I am heading to Chicago for the 2005 Eating Tour. If you ever need an investor in a dog cart biz, let me know. You can get your cart here http://www.allamericanhotdog.com/.

MD, I believe a Vienna dog stand could do extremely well on State Street. Ella's Deli survived for years until their prices went up and their quality went down. Good marketing is the answer. One major problem is the high rent on State Street. You'd have to sell a lot of hot dogs just to pay the rent. If I were to sell hot dogs in Madison, it would be during the weekends, with a cart at a major shopping mall during the day and near the most popular bars from 9pm until one hour after the bars closed($2 for a loaded Chicago style dog, $3 for a jumbo Polish, and $1 for drinks). Location, great product, fair prices, and volume are the key to the successful Madison hot dog venue. Too bad no one's figured it out because Madison does have the population to support a good hot dog business. The great illusion of Madison is that everyone's a health fanatic. Don't believe it! They're tons of closet hot dog consumers just waiting for the right place to open.

There's a franchise that just opened in the North Atlanta area called BobbyGs. They feature the Vienna beef hot dog on the poppy seed bun, done any way you want it, except with ketchup on it. Apparently that's considered gauche. I can't stand ketchup on anything except burgers and fries, so I can understand where they're coming from. They do have a slaw dog, which is called a South Side Slaw Dog. All their sandwiches are named after streets in Chicago. My personal favorite is the Maxwell Street (Polish sausage with peppers, onions and mustard). They also have gyros, and pizza (not deep dish) which a coworker described in orgasmic tones as "ex-cellent", but I haven't tried it yet. I'm working my way through their menu before my inevitable bypass. Basically, they have everything except cheesesteaks, burgers and chicken wings. You can see their full menu and locations at www.bobbygs.com

I don't know what a post about a Chicago style hot dog operation in Atlanta is doing in a thread about Mr. Hotdog in Las Vegas, but Bobby G seems serious about doing Chicago right. I may have the opportunity to check this place out later this month, but the fact that they are somehow using fresh baked (maybe from frozen) Gonnella bread says it all. This is the bread that Mr. Beef uses.

Back to Las Vegas, which casino on the strip has that $0.99 foot long hot dog? I've seen it on the Travel Channel but cannot remember the name.

You can get a $.99 foot-long at the Frontier, but it's the worst hot dog I ever ate.
