Mrs. White's Golden Rule Cafe Tue, 02/10/09 4:34 PM (permalink)
I had lunch at this place last Saturday, after seeing it featured on the home page.  I had traveled to the area to go to a conference in Scottsdale, and stopped there on my way back to the airport in Phoenix.

I arrived about 1:30 p.m. -- just after the lunch rush, I suspect.  I got a table for two without a moment's wait -- and there were still plenty of seats at the counter.

The waitress was very busy, but very pleasant.  I ordered fried chicken, rice and gravy, and mixed greens (this is cooked assorted greens, not a salad) plus unsweetened ice tea.

The food took a while to arrive, but once it did, it was so blisteringly hot (temperature, not spicy) that I couldn't eat it right away. The chicken consisted of three pieces -- wing, breast and thigh -- very crisp on the outside and tender on the inside.  The rice and gravy was good, but I thought the gravy was a little watery and a bit bland.  The "mixed greens" were outstanding. The portions of the rice and gravy and greens were generous.

The waitress didn't bring me any corn bread, which is included with the meal. The manager noticed this while he was busing tables and brought me a piece.  It was obviously right out of the pan, and frankly, a little too soft -- it should have stood longer before cutting.  I think that's most likely the reason the waitress hadn't brought it to me with my entree.

I was too full to order dessert.

As the roadfood summary indicates, the meal is fixed price, unless you order all white meat chicken, which I did not.  I thought the price was reasonable, given the quality and quantity of the food.   The staff were very welcoming and made me, a total stranger, feel at home.

I was in and out in less than 40 minutes.  This is a terrific stop on the way to or from Sky Harbor airport (between 10:30 a.m. and 7 p.m., Mon-Sat).

I have only been to Mrs. White's on the one occasion, but was very impressed.  My mother was with me and she was a little thrown off by the writing the daily specials on the inside walls.  But everything we ate were fine versions of soul food classics.  On the way out, I asked where the owners were originally from, because there was no way they were from Phoenix.  I was told Tyler, Texas.  That makes a little bit more sense.

        Thanks for the report rumaki!
