My 10 Commandments Of Being A Member At Roadfood!

1. I Shall never buy Pizza from a chain.
2. I Shall never eat Fast Food unless traveling and no other choice exists.
3. I shall never eat a Hot Dog or any other food product from a Gas Station Roller Griller.
4. I Will not judge a place on one visit alone.
5. I Will frequent my local Mom and Pops during this economy.
6. When traveling I will first search roadfood forums and try recommendations.
7. I will try regional specialties no matter how strange they sound.
8. I Shall not give up until I find the place.
9. If it has been fried I will try it.
10. When a great place changes ownership I will try to accept the change.

I agree that you have every right to make your choices. They won't be my choices.

I will try to be less judgemental about those who sometimes eat fast food or chains and those who never, ever eat fast food or chains.

I will not be a hypocrite by criticizing someone who eats in a chain in one thread, then extolling a chain's virtues in another.

I will not pronounce a food "yuk" but rather politely explain I just don't care for that preparation.
 
I will not make lists of thou shalts.  We have enough rules already.

Me, too, espescially #2, and #4
...as I like a Krystal Burger when I'm in Fort Lauderdale... it's fast food, but I can't get that here in Jersey..
and I need a change from my White Castles!
(but I almost would never eat at a Mcdonald's or Burger King when traveling, as I can get them right down the street from me..
(unless I was stranded for 2 days in a storm, or something)
I'd rather go hungry on the road.... I could stand to skip a few meals lately!
 
And regarding #4, I can't say "never" to that, cause occasionally the food is so horrid (think "frozen food" heated up) , or the owner /cook is so nasty that I would not want to give them my return business...

I'm glad that you mentioned that because what I feel like you were trying to get at was something fun and were some of the General guiding principles that you follow when Roadfooding it up. I do find I can agree with some more than others and I won't personally follow some of them but still I think the general feeling of the list has something to say about what Roadfood means to portray.
 
My 2 cents on the list though.
 
I would personally follow 2 to even further and would rather go hungry with the exception of 5 Guys and Rally's/Checker's.
I have in the past judged places on the first visit alone if I felt like my experience was terrible enough to make me stay away for a long time if not forever. Few have matched this but still it has happened.
I personally will frequent anyplace that has food that I find to be of good value or good taste regardless of the economy or affiliation with a chain. While I traditionally like Mom & Pop places and find their flavors and value to be what I am looking for places such as California Pizza Kitchen, The Pub, and 5 Guys will get my business as I feel like their food and quality are what I am looking for.

Why is not eating "fast food" in your list?  There are hundreds of fast food places in the Roadfood.com approved reviews section.

My exception to #4 would be that if you walk into a place & it's obvious that it hasn't had a good cleaning in months (or years). That's not going to change unless there's a change in ownership.

You are correct MiamiDon. I was referring to the Big Three or Four. McDonalds, Burger King, Taco Bell, Wendy's etc...
Those who have read my many posts know that alot of this is tounge in cheek and is not a guideline for other members. But more as a thread for others to add to and add some of there insight and humor. Hey I like 5 guys, White Castle, and Waffle House. It was a thread to stimulate not to incite....well maybe a little...lol...Russ

I have to say that some of the best food I have ever eaten was not at the cleanest places. Much of the great street food in the world would not pass as clean. I will gladly eat Tacos from a street vendor in Mexico while many would never even think of it....Russ

See now you understand the thread. Something about the way Taco's from Jack in the Box cheese melts and tastes and leaves a big grease stain in the bag and on the napkins. I like the revision...Russ
 
I spent half my adult life in San Diego. While Roberto's is a chain I would pay $50 dollars for a Carne Asada Burrito right now.

I think I routinely violate 6-7 of those.

Great list, both the original commandments and the modified ones.  I suspect I am not diligent enough to follow all of them and do sin against some occasionally.  (My North Caroline heritage certainly supports number 9 about eating anything fried!)
 
If I could be so bold as to add a commandment, I would suggest
 
11.  I will be enthusiastic about a great place to find _____________  (fill in the blank with any food) but will not insist that I have found the best __________ (same food item as above) in the world and that no other place can match it, realizing that people have differing tastes and I may be in the minority with my opinion.

It is in Kettering near Dayton.  My lunchmate from that area is now going on a three week sojourn to Albany and VT and Reno so they will have to be back burnered til late January - really depressing!

Maybe put something in one of those Where to Eat in Ohio or Meet and Eat  threads and pick up a new lunchmate in the area. Now I am sad for you.

While I mostly agree with your list, I'd like to comment on #6. We are , of course, very fortunate to have the wealth of knowledge this forum presents us, one should not limit themselves to eating at spots mentioned here. 

In some ways this board is a victim of its own success. I certainly use the reviews and postings here to plan some of my eating when taking a trip, but I don't  plan each and every meal. I enjoy the serendipity of seeking out, or stumbling onto, a spot I've never heard of. If we all only ate at the "must do's" , there would be  no new finds - a trend I've noticed over the past few years.

Commandment of being a Roadfood member:

If I'm going to insult someone, or tick them off, I have to do it in such a manner as to not draw too much attention from the moderators, and in such a way that the person being targeted is unsure of or unaware that they are being hit. To do otherwise is crude and blunt and frankly, too easy and no fun.


I can't think of any other rules.
