My Sponge: RIP ...

I lost my sponge ... at least half of it, down my garbage disposal.

Should I be concerned?

Greg, I have read your post for as long as you have been a part of this forum. Always very good and to the point. Strange thread you created. Maybe an early cocktail?

Are you concerned about the disposal or the sponge? I don't think the sponge will hurt the disposal, but the reverse is definitely NOT the case. The sponge will be filtered out at the water treatment plant if it doesn't dissolve all by itself.

    Ode to a Sponge

I had a sponge named Bob,
    I knew him very well,
    He fell in my disposal,
It chopped him all to hell.

And now he's on a journey,
To where we do not know,
And with his passing through our lives,
He's helped us all to grow.

Services will be held at the Northampton Sewerage Treatment Plant on Thursday at 9:00am.

Darn, I hate when this happens. Especially if I don't have another sponge around. I end up half-sponged until I can get to the store and buy a new one.

My wife, the Nurse, said it could interfere with whatever social life you might have planned for the kitchen counter....but the replacement 'parts' wouldn't take long to install.

To be more specific, I was running water, I noticed my sink was filling up with water, I didn't notice/give-thought to the sponge floating in the water, I ran the disposal knowing it must have been clogged with the who-knows-what that might have been in there cuasing the backup ... vavroooom, the sink clears up and I see a glimpse of orange sponge dissappear, I quickly turn off the disposal, but not before half the sponge was no longer intact.

So, this means there is a half chopped up sponge somewhere in the deeps of my plumbing.

I am concerned that it might, I don't know, clog up something. (???)

To: Paul, it too late for an early one, but I think the time is right now.

To: CSD, it is always good to have an ode on-hand ...

Gregg, I wouldn't worry about it. My brother used to work at Polk Bros, a major Chicago appliance giant. Maytag had a working display in his store, where customers could actually throw nails in the disposal. It ground them up into fine pieces and they went down the drain. As long as the disposal is still functioning and your plumbing is still draining, that sponge is long gone. I won't begin to tell you the things my wife has sent down our disposal. If, per chance, your disposal has stopped, press the reset button under the unit. If that doesn't work, a key wrench can be used to manually turn the blades. OTOH, if the drain's plugged, use a plunger on it a few times.

Good riddance, now throw the other half away a sponge has no place in a kitchen.
Did you know that the kitchen sponge is probably the dirtiest thing in your home? Worse than the toilet seat. The sponge often gets used to clean other things, but does not often get cleaned itself. And sponges have the two things all germs love - warmth and moisture. Makes you think, doesn't it?

Most of these sponges , after only one day, have enough germs on them to make you sick. Top of the list are E.coli, and Staphylococcus aureus.

In a study conducted in the U.S, it was found that more than 70% of kitchen sponges had high bacteria levels and 38% had high levels of E.coli. Ironically, it is this very sponge that gets used to 'clean' other surfaces, but often this exercise merely serves to spread the germs around.

What's the most unsanitary spot in your house?

I keep my sponge in a plastic cup w/bleach and water solution near my sink at all time.
My watch fell down my drain in my bathroom sink this am (honestly). I had to go to work and will try to retrieve it after work. What to do? Can I take it a part under the sink and will my watch be there?

Most likely it is stuck in the u shaped trap under the sink. Don't forget to put a bucket under the trap before you take it apart.

Thanks fpczyz, you just put me off my feed for the rest of the dayI think sometimes living in ignorance can be a good thing (my wife tells me I've raised that to an art form) but back to Gregg's question. Check to see if it was the left or right half that went down the disposal. Then look at the package it came in for further instructions. Don't thank me, it's my job. Fred

Retrieved the watch - a little grimy, but still ticking (it's a Timex).

Hmm. I wonder whether it was your sponge that caused my Disposal to stop working two days ago.

I believe it was probably SassyGritsAL's Timex which takes a licking and keeps on ticking.

LOL, when i saw the subject line I was thinking of Elaine in that Seinfeld episode complaining about her Birth Control sponges being discontinued and whether a guy was "Sponge" worthy, since she had a limited supply of said "Sponges".

Nor I neither. Actually this thread has been educational as well as entertaining. Where else could you learn how to throw nails down a disposal or that a sponge could be the starting point for a new biological weapon of mass destruction? Fred PS. Thanks Chicago
