My favorite greasy cheeseburger

Mine WAS Lena Lous.. 5 minutes from my house also.. BUT, they quit serving food (temporary thing so they tell me).. Roadfooder (Phoenix9) went there on my advice and clued me in. Freinds now tell me the next best thing is the Choo Choo Cafe at Plainfield and Leonard.. But with my luck, they'll be done serving food also by the time I get there...

(as an edit, Lena Lous is a tavern in Ada, MI. The CC Cafe (which is an old train depot painted red) is on the NE almost NW side of northern Grand Rapids, MI.)..

Without meaning to create a deep spiritual analysis surrounding the choice of a Burger, I have to add my two pennies worth here.
When I saw this thread I thought, 'Another list of the same places from the same people...including my constant entry, Farmer Boy's in the Inland Empire of SoCal', with it's followup from my friend Engine Captain out there in California reminding me that Farmer Boys has slipped a bit in recent years.

But then a thought came over me.
It wasn't just the Burger that made this a special deal. It was the experience of going to the restaurant, placing the order with the counter-girl, exchanging greetings in 'SpanEnglish' with the grill-guys from across the counter and 'kitchen', Then sitting at the concrete picnic tables outside as the trains rolled by on the old Southern Pacific 'Sunset Line'.

While the Burgers at most of the Farmer Boys stands are pretty much the same, the EXPERIENCE that made this a favorite of mine was located at the stand that is just across the 10 freeway and RR tracks from the Ontario Mills Mall in Ontario CA. It was usually combined with the waiting time for my wife's (now and then) trip to the Mills mall for Shopping and HER visit to Her mother who lived nearby. Farmer Boys is/was my Oasis from the hassles that I found at both of the locations mentioned just above. It was enough of a positive experience that I would volunteer to drive her to those places, instead of sending her off by herself (a 75 mile RT and 4-5 hour time loss)

The Burger was good. The total EXPERIENCE made it GREAT!

I think I have mentioned this place before, but a must try for a good and I mean good greasy hamburger is Big Spring Cafe, Huntsville, AL. They have the small hand patted burgers that they serve with only mustard and onions (ask for an extra greasy one if desired). They have only one table and about 16 stools. They have great chili and red slaw dogs too.

I ate a kingburger w/cheese at Fatburger's on Saturday (charred, no mayo or relish), and it was pure heaven.

Try the burgers in Saranac, Mi. A place called Germaines. It's a very small place, but they have the best burgers. Make sure to order a basket of fries to go with it because they are homemade, hot and delicious.

My personal favorite greasy burger is from the White Diamond in Clark N.J. They've been there since the fifties and nobody's burger tastes close to theirs. They are truly addicting, and I can't ride past exit 135 on the parkway without stopping for a large cheese with the works and 2 small cali cheese the works. Anyone who has ever had them will probably agree.

Laurie... Didnt Germaines burn down a year ago? Or am I thinking of another place..

I would love to try all these places!

I chime in w/ Keller's in Dallas, the #5 special. I like a litte chili on mine but great even without. Get some tater tots to go w/ it! They kinda help cut the grease.

I have many favorite cheeseburger, but my favorite *greasy* cheeseburger (mainly because of the grilled onions) is from Wall Street Deli in downtown Richmond. 8th and Franklin.

Fat Mo's in Nashville or Memphis. The Super Deluxe with spicy fries is great (just bring someone to share it with you, it's big).

Kincaid's in Ft. Worth and Southlake, TX is my choice -or maybe, In and Out - or maybe Stamp's in Jackson, MS or maybe THe Beacon in Spartanburg, SC or maybe.............

White Mana in Hackensack New Jersey, and Mana Diner in Jersey City NJ would top my list of nominees. I haven't been to either in a long time, I wonder if they are both still there. The Mana has been on the threatened and endangered list forever, since it rests on a very dated section of Rt 1 where highway repairs are sorely needed.

Uncle Vic, Germaines is still there. In fact, I ate there last weekend. They just changed owners and they say they're not planning on making any major changes. Hope not b/c everything there is pretty good.

CSD: Kewpee's is a good choice. But out your way I prefer Big Star. The Velveeta cheese is irresistable.

A little farther out is Billy's in Jackson, WY. Big, flavorful, juicy burgers.

I myself, also like Big Star in Kenosha, Wi.

DAIRYLANE in Sandersville/Tennile ("twin cities") Ga. on Highway 15.

They have these half size burgers where the fat just kinda blends into the first third of the bun, but not enough to soak it or seem disgusting...Just right. Just enough to get the flavor and not the grease.

Coupled with a milkshake and you're on your way.

Again, the recently opened, "Twisted Root Burger Co." on Commerce Street in the "Deep Ellum" section of Dallas.
A full half pound of dripping cheesy Black Angus heaven (or, hell?) on a bun.
Don't forget the sweet potato chips and homemade vanilla rum root beer.
Oh, God, now I'll have to go back again for lunch today!

Da Billy Goat Tavern on Lower Michigan Avenue's Double Cheezboogie. We alway have lunch there wnen we are in Chicago.

Tsores & Anna, I prefer Velveeta on a Big Star over the cheese on Kewpee burger. If Kewpee's would only use Velvetta, It'd be cheeseburger heaven. Kewpee's made the "Restaurant of the Day" today. They're open for breakfast Monday-Saturday at 7:00am. The place is 5 minutes from my home and there's no better breakfas in Racine than a Kewpee's double cheeseburger to start your day.

I don't agree at all. Well, I have to admit I never actaully had one of thier burgers. The only time I was ever in there was about 10 years ago, I went in with my wife and son who was about 8 at the time. First we had to walk thru a cloud of thick smoke from the Good Ol' boys standing around talking to each other near the counter. Then, after waiting at least 10 minutes for someone to take our order (the cook and counterperson were too busy with thier conversation with the Boys), we just got up and left. Nobody even seemed to notice.

For good greasy burgers in tht area I go to the White Diamond in Roselle. Even when it's crowded I never wait more than a few minutes to place my order. ---Ken

I like Dyer'on Beal St. in Memphis. They cook them in a vat of oil that is supposed to be 50 years old. They serve them with a slice of onion and pickle. They are very good!

I was always a big fan of the Sarkis cheeseburger. Not cheap, but good, greasy, and better than anything close by, with the exception of a Poochie Char Cheddar Burger with well done grilled onions and a basket of cheese fries. Now that was a heart attack waiting to happen.

poochies would have 25 pounds of onions going in the corner of the grille at all times and a keg of cheddar warm next to them and then spread a huge chunk on your bun

White Mamma in Hackensack NJ is still around and better than ever. It serves what I think is the best burger. Small, made to order on a Martin Bakery potato bun, with onions and pickle.

HAMBURG INN in Iowa City Iowa. The original was around the corner from the Pentacrest, the #2 was a few blocks mortheast. A true greasy spoon, the waitresses had to wash their hair each night to remove the airborne grease. But the burgers were incredible!
