cecif - BBQ shrimp was invented by Pascal's Manale restaurant in NOLA, and for some unknown reason, the chef/owner called it that, but it has no connection to cooking shrimp on a grill or using a bbq sauce (at least the original version).  Mr. B's restaurant has an excellent recipe on their website with a little history on it:

You know, if the large Pennsylvanian had offered to buy the full size lemon meringue pie and swap it with the Southern Ladies for their small sweet potato pie, all may have been well in Dixie on that day.  And he might have appreciated the beauty of the experience, too.

We went to Doe's Eat Place in Greenville last night.  It's still just as great as it ever was.  Mmmmm........

Excellent!  What did you eat?

BB.......My oldest son is 40 now.  I sat him in a high chair in Doe's when he was a baby.  Most of the same folks are still there.  We had a group of 14 and service was a little slow because they were really busy.  We had tamales, broiled shrimp, meat balls, salad, steaks and fried shrimp.  Same thing all the time.  Split a medium rare T Bone with my wife.  It's 30 minutes from my home.  The tamales are better at Joe Pope's White Front Cafe in Rosedale.  I was born there.  I really enjoy your trip reports.  The one's in MS are outstanding.  I have been going to Hick's, Doe's, Lusco's, Giardinia's, Lillo's and Ranchero a long time.  Write up another MS trip soon.  We also were at Po Monkey's a few days ago.

Wow!  What a great meal that must have been.  With a group of 14, you must have made reservations ahead of time.  I didn't even know that they made meatballs, but I have seen people eating spaghetti there before, so meatballs isn'tmuch of a leap.  Can't imagine living only 30 minutes away from such a great restaurant!

The meatballs are best for appetizers.  Get an order of boiled or fried shrimp, tamales and meat balls and pass em around.  There's a great steakhouse in Merigold just N of Cleveland that you should visit.  It's owned by a guy who hunts a lot and the inside is full of wild game on all the walls.  Po Monkey's is just down the road.

I went to Ole Miss so your Oxford photo's are fun.  Taylor Grocery, Phillip's, Ajax and City Grocery are fun.

Naming a favorite town in Mississippi is difficult, a favorite bbq is easy.  I loved my visit to Leatha's in Hattiesburg and it is the best I have ever had in Mississippi.

BB.....where's your favorite BBQ.  Texas, AL, GA, MS, NC or where.  Thanks.

Oh, apparently I misunderstood your question.  Man, that is a really tough question.  I really do like it all, including Texas, Kansas City, Memphis and North Carolina styles.  I even love the yellow mustardy sauce in South Carolina.  But, since it was my first exposure to Southern bbq many years before I found Roadfood, if I had to choose one, it would probably be Memphis pulled pork sandwiches, with cole slaw on top and bbq spaghetti on the side.
