I noticed with the new look we got the ability to receive scores. Ok, I don't know whow it actually works but noticed my score had gone from 2, to -8. Ok, so what gives... how does this scoring thing work? Dennis in Cary

That is done by clicking on Message Options and picking the number of stars under Rate Post. This section does not allow for that action.

Didn't we deal with all this a few months ago?? Please do not wake this sleeping dragon. As for this being a limiting factor for posting trip reports, I can't recall seeing anyone give a trip report a poor rating...even during the period when people were abusing the rating system to be mean to other posters.

Gregg (I hope I am spelling your name right), I hope that you don't let someone's zinging you (for whatever reason) keep you from posting trip reports and other information. I have really enjoyed them and the other work that people put into this site. Please keep up the enthusiasm because it is a great help to many of us. From the reports on the western MA meet-up, it is clear that your hospitality is still quite large, and that type of response from you and others is what makes this site so great. Tony, Sorry to keep waking the dragon or beating the dead horse; I just wanted to drop a quick note.

I don't mind discussing the subject, I was just concerned about talk of "how I can really zing some people" and also disappointed to see some still seem to still use the rating system to grind some mysterious axe. If anyone who feels they are being "zinged" wants to know who is doing the zinging, drop me a note.

It's pretty hard to get all hyped up when finding all this great food. Just a growing family (and I will be growing out if I keep visiting all the places I want to).

Tony Bad If anyone who feels they are being "zinged" wants to know who is doing the zinging, drop me a note. I don't care who is "zinging" me, but some knucklehead just rated one of posts highly. There's someone who needs their meter checked - as I can assure you...I have posted nothing of any value here in weeks....errrr.....months. Who are we kidding? Years.

We had a four page thread entitled "Topic Rating Abuse" back here in February. Ironically, the last entry to that thread (as of this writing) was posted by Dennis in Cary on Wed, 02/25/09 at 10:37 PM. I guessed right that in a few months time some valued member of this forum would have his or her feelings hurt again because of the Rating System. The feature is undocumented by the software package itself. There were a few threads that explain how it works. The biggest "gotcha" is that if people think the post is only worth one or two stars, they don't realize that their score is assigned a negative number. In this system, a three star rating is a neutral or zero. So, you can't even automatically blame the rater because he or she may not know how the points system works. Psychologically, a rating of -2 sounds a lot worse than a score of 1 on a scale of 1 to 5. But in this software package, they are exactly one and the same thing. For all we know, the person knocking down Dennis' rating is someone looking to buy message board software, and is 'kicking the tires' of this software package's features by experimenting with Dennis' profile. In that four page thread, I proposed that forum members set their profile rating to private. Sure, if a reader wants to judge if I am a crank or not, they will have to read a bunch of my posts rather than just read my numerical rating. Here is a cut and paste from the steps I posted in that thread: Steps to Change Profile to Private. 1. Log In. 2. Hover over User Control Panel near top of page. 3. Click on "Profile". 4. Click the "Preferences" tab. 5. In the Fifth Section, Privacy Section, check the box next to "Hide profile from the public". 6. Clck on "Save" at the bottom of the section. I also started another thread in early March discussing ratings abuse on other message boards. Victims there fought back by deleting a bunch of their their posts or editing their posts to read: 'Message redeacted due to Ratings Abuse.'

Just to clear the air: I've never rated anyone nor, to the best of my knowledge, have I ever been rated. I think the whole idea stinks and should be excised from these boards Cheers, John

It is now further clear that whichever moderator rated the above referenced post as "helpful" is also in need of getting their meter checked. I would like to thank the OP for reminding me that there is a rating feature, though. I kind of forgot about it, but I have been going buck-nutty rating posts today. It is fun to determine other people's value.

I don't really understand the mentality of a Poster who often labels posts by others on several threads as "inAppropriate", keeping his identity as the 'Judge' secret and not giving any reasons for his comment... but then he starts a thread with an empty post, that he obviously considers that to be an "Appropriate" Post. Perhaps Miami Don would care to clarify his actions since he did not respond to my earlier request to identify himself as the master of the 'inappropriate' label-assigner..

OK, Looks like things are settling down again. We can all go back to griping about Ketchup on Hot Dogs or Mustard Based BBQ Sauce.

Ok, Mayor, I admit it...... I put ketchup on a hot dog. I like chili, onions, mustard, and a little ketchup. Can't help it, that's how I was raised. Dennis in Cary
