Mya's Sushi Logbook Entry

I always enjoy reading Chris and Amy's restaurant reviews, trip reports and logbook entrys. Although I was a little taken aback by Sushi- In connecticut???!!! I must respectfully disagree that Sushi is not road food- it definetely is, especially in Southern California where "roadfood style" teryiaki joints, noodle parlors and sushi bars abound- and of course where California Rolls were invented- if this isn't true LA Roadfood then I don't know what is. In fact the Stern's wrote about it in their Eat Your Way Across the USA book when they reviewed "Ichiban" in San Diego.

WJ, I know, I know..."sushi in CT" gets the same reaction from many of our friends. But Miya's really is a cut above, and they strive to push the boundaries of traditional sushi. I thought that sushi was RF as well, in certain parts of the country, but then Michael Stern himself (on the bus tour of the North Shore, MA) told me that it wasn't "exactly" Roadfood, speaking of sushi from our fine state... If ice cream can be RF, then sushi can be. You can at least deep fry some rolls in sushi.

Chris I agree, using the analogy of Italian food, there are many Italian restaurants that that could be considered roadfood and then there are some that are pricy, fancy, jacket required etc that couldn't be more opposite. I think the same applies to Sushi Restaurants as well. As you probably both know, there are many many more "casual" sushi joints in California than there are here on the East Coast.

As soon as I read that logbook entry, I knew we would be hearing from wanderingjew soon on this subject! BTW, I thoroughly enjoyed Ichiban P.B. also.

Hats off to Ichiban from us, too -- and to World Curry a few doors down on Garnet Avenue, since we had to eat at both places when we were last there... Chris

Also note that the Logbook section is a more free-wheeling, unedited neighborhood of Roadfood.com (but open only to Roadfood Insiders). People are free to post dining experiences both good and bad, classically Roadfood or not; whatever the poster thinks may be of interest to others.

In Atlanta we we have Ru Sans, a high volume, high energy, VERY LOUD place with a lot of sushi varieties including some creative rolls and the nigri is generally priced by the piece. Ru Sans has a big turnover and the fish has always been fresh in my experience, if perhaps a little below the highest grade. They also have teriyaki sticks and other Japanese items as small plates or snackportions as well as dinners. If it is not road food, as described by several on this message board, then I don't know what is. At the other end of the scale hereabouts is Magic Fingers (MF) sudhi which has some of the best around but with a very different atmosphere and price structure. I would NOT call MF Sushi "road food" but would recommend it to anyone seeking one of the best experiences that Atlanta has to offer.

Nah. Bait is bait. That some folks are willing to eat bait is their own fault.

Great more tuna for me. Hoffman, you can run off and eat your raw ground beef. I'm looking for a difference there.

Well Mr Hoffman When I go back to Southern California next year, I'm going to eat all the bait I can find and will submit restaurant reviews (not trip reports) for every "bait shop" I go to.

Great. I hope you'll get to review Ryan's bait Shop and Sushi Bar once my grandson gets out of the Army and opens the place.
