NASCAR/Gas prices

I read eleswhere on the net that NASCAR is going to shorten some of their races do to the riseing cost of gas. It was reported that those cars get about 2mi. to the gallon. I honestly can't see a significant savings. Less time raceing= less comercials and vendor sales. Chow Jim

I just did the math in my head ... say they shortened a race by 100 miles ... figuring 43 cars and a gas price of $5.00 a gallon ... they'd only save a bit more than $20,000 (less than the price of a single tv ad). I'd not worry.

A shorter race, less revenue. Like Gregg said, it ain't gonna happen. The longest race of NASCAR comes up this weekend. The Charlotte 600 comes on after the Indy 500. Great weekend of total racing for folks that like that and I am one of those. Paul E. Smith Knoxville, TN

jimeats. I sure hope there's no truth to what you read elsewhere concerning shortening the NASCAR race distances. However I don't doubt that the enlightened politically correct amongst us think this to be a major way to solve our fossil fuel crisis. God help us all! Ole Rouxdog

man they are going to shorten the taxicab races???? how the heck are they going to have time to fix the outcome with fake debris flags??!!! it makes the mind boggle at the thought. jack ps. real race cars don't have fenders, doors or wings and the last roadster turned out the lights at indy!!!! pps. for my 56th birthday the wife is setting down the cooler in front of me. sunday morning is the F1 race at monaco followed by indy. at least F1 still has real race cars!!! in the case of F1 wings are ok but never ever on sprints and midgets!!!! and go sarah fisher!!!!

Prisonchef, the subject here is FUEL consumption! I'll be tuned into the Brickyard event also, pulling for Danica Patrick from the Rockford Illinois area. Wish my wife would put the cooler beside my lazyboy.YOU ARE ONE LUCKY MAN! Bet she's gonna keep you supplied with hot wings and a trash can to throw the bones toward for practice shots! HAPPY BIRTHDAY! Ole Rouxdog PS. Bet you don't have the courage to let your wife read what you wrote. If you do there goes the birthday party!

I'm in the Washington DC area right now after a week off the grid at the Raccoon Holler campground along the Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina. We are heading to Indianapolis tomorrow for THE RACE and more pork tenderloin pursuing of course. We drive a diesel powered camper van and get better than 22 mpg. Diesel, just in time, is now rightfully cheaper than regular gasoline again.

Smith Knoxville, TN I love the 600 but mostly hate living close to the track. Watching the warbirds do their flyovers is kinda fun however. When President Regan came they brought out everything. B1's, B52's, F/A 18's, F16's, F14's, F15's, A6's and even a Gooney Bird in full Normandy invasion paint. I sat in my front yard and a flight of each would go over about every three to five minutes...Leica 7X50's came in handy that day. Today I have to drive into Charlotte and will add thirty minutes to the trip due to race traffic...and this is Tuesday. The family will NOT consider going into the city this weekend.

960- That's kinda how we feel about going into Louisville during the Pre-Derby Festival. We change any medical appointments and don't even think about Costco during that time !. Thunder over Louisville is the Airshow and Fireworks display that opens the festival. We watch the fireworks on TV and I sit on the deck watching the various aircraft make their turns, lining up for the pass up and down the Ohio River in their part of the show. This year we had a pair of F-22 Raptors fly over a couple of times, and the B-2 seemed to use our house for it's pivoting turn to return to the flight-route (not really, but it looked great!) We had more T-6's and T-28's than I could count. Race time anywhere, be it car or horse sure seems to draw a huge crowd of followers. While it is a bit inconvenient for us residents, it sure pours money into the community.

Have to agree about the money coming in...I turn down catering to NASCAR because I could not handle the size of these parties. We do a few things for small gatherings...200-300 people...but nothing larger. Due to NASCAR explosion and Dole Foods coming to the area my house's value has doubled in the past five years...so have my taxes BTW. Guess I'll sell my second row beach house soon and buy one w/ nothing but ocean in front of it. Just joking...I like being second row...hurricaines eat up beach front places like a second grader eats candy.

What NASCAR spends on gas is a drop in the ocean and the entertainment is a hoot. Personally, I enjoy it. Paul E. Smith Knoxville, TN

I was at the rain delayed Indy 500 and got to my sister's house after the race to watch the Indianapolis delayed replay of the 500 that was on at the same time as the 600. It was was to have a TV with a picture within a picture but the frustrating part is in trying to watch both you become acutely aware of how many commercials they run. It is getting rediculous to run commercials for 5 minutes or more.
