Flights are booked. Should I not tell any CASI or ICS judges that I know about this trip? " />

Ed, Ed. Relax. Everyone who knows chili knows this stuff isn't chili. It's good, but it's just Greek meat sauce.

I'll wait now for the appearance of TJ, who will blast me once again for speaking the truth.

I did an interview with the head of the ICS the other day. I'm surprised she's still talking to me-----she was NOT impressed a few weeks ago when I told her i was going to Cincinnati for CHILI!!!" />

OK. Now she's in trouble with TJ.

I'm looking forward to breaking pancakes with Dale in Ohio. I intend to pay him back with a meal at Olive Garden (Applebees is a little too high falutin for my tastes).

Cliff - Big Boy was (and is) my first choice. Unfortunately, SW Ohio has no Big Boy restaurants, I checked. (Insert crying emoticon here)

Wait, what?  I know I ate at a Frisch's Big Boy for breakfast just a few years.  Albeit, it was in Florence, KY.

Oh, there are a number of them in the Cincinnati area. Here's one:
Big Boy #1

Cincinnati, OH 45225
513-559-0555
You must have missed 'em.

Thanks Michael. That's great news for me, and Dale.

Googled a BB locator that must be for a different franchiser, Elias is up north & in Michigan.

If that is the same one from 50 years ago, then that would have been one of my old breakfast hangouts in college.

Frisch's Big Boy is different than other Big Boy Restaurants. I don't know how breakfast compares, but the "original Frisch's Big Boy" sauce is mayo and dill pickle based. For me, it is crack sauce. YUMMO!!! Big Boy sauce that I have sampled elsewhere in the country is like thousand island dressing, or Big Mac sauce.

Buddy Roadhouse,
The Lenten fish fry is legendary in Cincinnati at Catholic Churches (and some other places... Catholic based). Cincinnati has a large Catholic population.

Some are legendary. Some serve beer. Some have good side dishes, some don't.  Some serve pizza (of the cheese variety. LaRosas, which is not very good).
The consensus is the best fish fry is served at a Westside meat market.

It is in the same place, but the old building was torn down and replaced a few years ago.

Frisch's is indeed different than the "other" Big Boy restaurant chains.  While Bob's Big Boy was famous on the west coast and Elias Brothers had a lock on Michigan, Frisch's has been a Cincinnati success story.  Many other parts of the country had Big Boy chains that have fallen by the wayside.  Shoney's, a chain from the South, got its start as a Big Boy franchisee but moved away from that model.  St. Louis's last Big Boy closed a few years ago, and some former employees have opened a "continuation business" across the highway from the old location featuring a similar menu without the branding.  Even Elias fell on hard times a few years ago and filed for bankruptcy.  And like Soozycue says, it is the Frisch's tartar sauce that "makes" the Big Boy.  The others use 1000-island and it just isn't the same.

Actually, Shoney's was from Charleston, West Virginia. It was started by Charleston resident and former Ohio State All-America tackle Alex Schoenbaum. The company moved to Atlanta in the '70s after a merger, but it had already dropped it's Big Boy connection.

The only Bob's I ever went to was at Castaic, or Castaic Junction -- I can't recall which for sure.

Interesting. I don't even recall them having a location there and I lived in Valencia, 10 miles away. Must have been when Castaic was just a truck stop.

Could be. Although the only thing at the Junction many years ago that I remember was the Blue Moon Saloon.

It's not a guy.
IHOPE was giving pancakes away on what they incorrectly say was National Pancake Day a few days ago.

Hey guys,
I was able to get 2 days off from work on the Thursday and Friday before the crawl.  That means the chili train departs from Chicago on the morning of April 10th and I am the conductor!  See you all in Cincy.

BTW, have we decided on an itinerary for Saturday or at least a final list of places we are going to hit?  Please let me know.
