Signman,

The Helmand is my favorite Afghani restaurant. I've been known to drive to B'more on the spur of the moment at the mere suggestion of meeting friends from DC there. Birjani at 25th and 3rd is a distant second place, though they do a fine pomegranite chicken.

Khyber Pass on St. Mark's is imminently forgettable, but good for people watching if you can snag an open air table.

Sue and Signman - Crab Soup Buns. See my post in the "Manhattan July 23 and July 24th thread. It's a dedication to converting the great, unslurped masses to the wonders of this little morsel. So far I'm 37 for 37.

And I'm always thrilled to convert more.....

Laura

P.S. The Berghoff's stand-up bar was Men Only for many, many years. While I worked in Chicago's Loop for a decade, it was co-ed and yes, still has top notch roast beef sandwiches. The creamed spinach, well, I'd swim in that too.

I goofed. Bamiyam (Not Birjani) is at 26th and 3rd (http://www.bamiyan.com/).

Oh, and I looked, and learned that there are multiple Helmand locations run by members of the Karzai family. I was pretty certain that I remembered the food (I didn't remember the name) from a restaurant I liked years ago in Chicago. Shockingly enough, I was right on this one. See http://www.citypaper.com/news/story.asp?id=4804 if you're interested.

    I found the article even-handed.

Thank you so much, Signman, now I'm craving Kaddo Borawni and Sabzy Challow. Looking at their website just brought tears to my eyes and rumbles to my stomach.

I'm going off to count lamb chops until I fall asleep.

    Cheers.

Sundancer7, I am glad that I have peaked your interest in my culture! I have some recipes that I would be glad to post! I am not sure where to put them though, they are not Mexican and that is the only one I see for Spanish food. San Juan is a very beautiful place! The food is excellent too!

        Happy eating all!

We would enjoy your recipes along with some history would be great. You can post under recipes and cooking techniques.

I have traveled every mile of Puerto Rico. I think I enjoyed the western part, extreme south where it seems to be very arid and the extreme east. I love the noisey frogs and the extreme amount of roadside stands.

Bill Voss, I have been here my whole life. My family migrated here before I was born but I guess for me Puerto Rico is the home of my heart..., don't get me wrong, Iowa is pretty ok too! There is just something about the Island that is very much enchanting, hence the name La Isla del Encanto (The Enchanted Island).

Sundancer7, I appreciate your guidance, I will start posting recipes!

P.S. I haven't been able to not look at this site since I first found it! I'm hooked on cooking all over again! You all are awesome! Love the stories...makes you feel like you are among friends!

Mamma, you can cook for me anytime you want to sugar. Bacalao and malanga make my heart go pitter patter.

Welcome aboard mamma. My wife, son and I visitted Puerto Rico two years ago and fell in love with old town San Juan. My wife fell in love with mafongo. I look forward to learning more about Puerto Rican recipes and cooking. Again, welcome.

I live in San Francisco and travel a lot as a professional storyteller and giving seminars to teachers and librarians. I have been a huge fan of the Sterns and their work since SQUARE MEALS, one of the greatest cookbooks ever. It is sadly out of print, but I just scored five copies of the paperback for gift giving.

I enjoy most foods, and have used the earlier versions of ROADFOOD and EAT YOU WAY ACROSS THE USA as guidebooks, as Jane and Michael have rarely led me astray.

I just joined today and I am trying to figure out how to identify myself--I haven't seen a chance to fill out a profile.

I also am a new member as of today and work as an RN at a community hospital. When I was in nursing school 13 years ago, I had gotten Roadfood for my husband for Christmas, but I was the one who ended up reading it as an escape from the stresses of studying my nursing and science textbooks. Many were the nights that I fell into a peaceful and contented sleep, drooling on my pillow after reading the Sterns' mouth-watering descriptions of pies or seafood or barbeque or doughnuts or burgers as they traveled all over the country. I thought I'd give anything to have their lives!

We love authentic, old diners and we also love road trips, just for the day or longer, and we research diners along routes or research routes along diners. I often imagine I'm one of the Sterns as I try to order what they might-- always try the croquettes or in Maine, blueberry something-or-other. When we took a New England road trip in 2001, we went to Polly's Pancake Parlor which the Sterns had recommended and it was exactly as they had described and a highlight of our time in New Hampshire.

So I'm a huge fan and this is a really nice, wholesome, fun site.

Hi All..I am a new member..Just bought the book and can't put it down. Have been to some places in it being from Dutchess county NY. The wife and I made a road trip to New Haven last weekend to try Louis Lunch, but it was closed for inventory. You did say to call ahead! This weekend we were going to Bethel CT to try the Sycamore Drive-In. I called ahead around 1:30pm and was told they are open but would be closing at 2:30 because of a Honduran Festival???? Oh well there is plenty of time to try more places...Mike

I'm Jim, but you may call me Big Ugly Mich. It's a nickname I got from two friends I served on the Constellation with in the eighties and since lost touch with, so I use it for everything hoping they'll recognise it.

I was born in Milwaukee, WI, like the smiley face. I'm 47, but the smiley face is only 33. I served for 4 years in the Marine Corps, 6 in the Navy and got out. Not long after that, I was enrolled in Milwaukee School of Engineering and Reagan pulled my GI bill right out from under me, so I've worked labor and food service jobs, not counting a hitch as a Pinkerton security guard, which offered no overtime, and I donated their uniforms to where the Mrs. works.

I like to drive the wife nuts by going to restaurants simply because, "We've never been there yet."

I like camping and photography, and wish I had more time to spend in the kitchen experimenting.

I have two kids, Jesse and Ed are both seven. Jesse is a shepherd-huskie mix, and Ed is a cat, and my wife's baby. Jesse is everyone else's baby.

I currently live in the bustling megalopolis of Trevor, WI, JUST north of the Illinois border, which makes for VERY interesting football seasons, especially Packer-Bear weeks. I'm also a die hard Cub fan (as if there's any other kind), which makes for very interesting visits home to Mama and the brother and 4 sisters.

I'll post a picture of the Mrs and myself as soon as I figure out how.

I'll also post some pithy comments to other posters when I can. I gotta rest up for Milwaukee Ala Carte, and the Kenosha County Fair tomorrow. Bye all.

My name is Jim also,I've been lurking in the background for some time. The reason being is the nuns at school put on my permanent record that I don't get along well with others.I am currently retired, worked as a teamster then high rise construction and I do miss it. Always tended bar part time to get me by during lay offs and any other sneezes in the economy. I'm currently going back to school looking to pick up a degree in history also studing Italian. The Italian has come in handy here in the Boston area due to the number of great Italian restarunts in the area love the food. The old Italian women are alot like southern cooks, they can turn a sows ear into a silk purse. I,ll be checking in more often taking a road trip to old Virginia in a couple of weeks doing the battlefields and other touristy things the hell with the gas prices, might not be here tommorow.Any suggestions for local spots down there would be appreciated stoping at the Redding Termnial in PA. on the way down. This is a great site with some fine postings.Chow

Hi, all! I'm Evie, but you can call me Curlz; it's rather fitting since I have quite the head of long curly hair, after all!
I can't believe it took me this long to visit the site, but here I am. I originally logged on b/c I'm heading up to Cape Cod next week and wanted some suggestions, but I see that this site is not only helpful, but also friendly. I'll certainly be on and off before the trip and will post once I return.

I live in Wilson, NC, the "vatican city" of eastern NC barbecue. 4 barbecue joints (Bill's, Parker's, Mitchells, Cherry's) + 1 Wal-Mart. We even have one legendary joint, Cherry's, strategically located 6 miles out of town in case a disaster hits the town.

I travel about 60K miles /yr. doing self-employed travelling sales of Pharma equipment. Formerly "big shot" in Pharma industry who got tired of politics, buyouts, mergers, etc. Male, 48 yrs. old.

Typically, a highlight of the day is where we're gonna stop for supper after cruising all day. Always on the lookout for a good NON-franchised restaurant.

                                          Hi there!! :::waving:::

I live in Hollywood Beach, FL, and both my partner and I travel around the world in search of good snorkeling, and good eating. In fact, we base most of our trips on eating. LOLOL!

I will always post a log of where we have gone, and where we have eaten. We're not into full course meals, instead, we love to graze. Our thinking is.... we can try more restaurants with grazing, rather than eating a full course meal at one restaurant and missing out on 4 others.

We are devastated, like the rest of you with what has happened in LA/MS/ and AL. We are especially heartbroken that one of our very favorite eating towns has been desicrated. We were just planning a long weekend with another foodie in New Orleans in September.

We have a list of 1,000 places we must go before we die. Hopefully, I'll be able to post about some of these places before I become too old and feeble to travel.

Looking forward to becoming part of the Roadie family.

                                          Shirley

I thought it may be a good time to bump this thread. I posted here as "Caramel Copper" so I won't post stuff again (for now )

I do however think the newer folks might enjoy the opportunity to introduce themselves, and give new topics in misc. a break.[:O)]

I never posted on this thread; it was so long, I wasn't sure if anyone would dig through and read it. I found this site after a newspaper article about the Sterns and their books. Seemed like an interesting place, lots of good information and comradship among the posters, so after lurking for a while, I began posting.

My id, Berndog, is a nickname given to me by my work friends. My name is Bernie, and I love dogs, especially my cocker spaniel. I also love foods and the information here has been invaluble when I travel and look for a good local place. Unfortunately, with business the way it is today, I now do very little traveling, compared to about six trips per year for the previous decade. This limits my ability to post about new roadfood type places I discover in my travels, but I am always willing to help those traveling in upstate NY, or coming to Rochester with recomendations on where to find good food.

I also enjoy cooking and the recipes and discussions about how to make them are very interesting.

I miss some of the old gang who have decided to leave Roadfood.com, many due to their disliking of posts about chains. My feeling is that all food types are deserving of some discussion, and there are local/regional chains that I am interested in hearing about if it turns out that they are all that are available when I travel in a certain area. I do agree that these threads belong in a specific area. Maybe we need a chain forum.

I also used to wonder about those who would come here for a while, then complain that this site is cold to newcomers. I never used to see that, and the welcomes to new members throughout this post from Mayor Al show what a warm place Roadfood is. However, this seems to be changing. Lately, there has been a lot of flaming when posters disagree with each other. This is very different from the good natured teasing of a year ago. Also, some new posters seem to be very unwelcome because of the subject of their posts, and lack of grammer. In fact, there have been accusations that some of these posters are departed older members coming back and trolling, looking to start flame wars.

I suggest that if we dislike a post due to the subject, we just ignore it and not add to it, or make fun of or pick fights with the poster. Lets return Roadfood.com to the warm, welcoming place it used to be.

Hello.. I'm Paul from Lake Mary, FL origianlly from North Haven, CT. I've been in and out of this site for several months, mostly topic-ing about hot dogs, clams, pizza, hot dog carts, New England hot dog buns, etc. I usually end up reminiscing about foods and places to eat in New Haven, CT. Florida has nice places to eat, but you just can't beat New England for GOOD FOOD. Hope to meet some good people here.

My favorite places are Louie's Lunch, Modern Pizza, Glenwood Drive In (got their T shirt this summer).

Take care all! (Wishing hurricanes came in glasses with a straw)

Howdy! I'm Kai'leen (pronounced like Eileen, but with a K in front). Our family lives just outside of Jackson, MS. I've been married to my incredible husband, James, for almost 8 years. We have two wonderful children: Rick, 7, and Deirdre, 6. They are both first graders. We're extremely proud of both of them. They are the lights of my life.

I work in a call center, doing quality assurance. James is a stay at home dad. We don't get to take many trips out of town, but when we do, we love to find the off the wall diners and stops. We would much rather support the local establishments than the chains if at all possible.

I've really enjoyed this board, and I'm trying to get my better half to get his rear end on here too.
