RE: NEW POSTERS! Introduce yourselves! Sun, 11/18/07 1:57 PM (permalink)
Well, I'm not new either, but I'll take a few minutes to "introduce" myself.

I'm a retired x-ray technologist, now certified medical transcriptionist (there are only 3000 certified MTs in the US). I spend most of my day on the computer; I am employed by our local hospital but get to telecommute from home (one of the best parts of being an MT!). Needless to say, when I am through with work for the day, I can't wait to get out of the "office" and away from the computer.

I was born in Washington State but reared in the South so consider myself a Southerner; Southern cooking is what I know best and what I do best, though after having lived in the Pacific NW since 1993, I have become pretty good at NW cooking as well (NW cooking is still not nearly as good as Southern cooking in my humble opinion).

I am married to a retired Seattle firefighter, and yes, I am still hoping he will eventually agree to let us move to the South; I pray for that every day. If he would agree to move, we could both retire. If we continue to live up here, we will never be able to retire (he's 62). Sad but true.

I have three children (two girls and a boy), and DH has two boys. Our children are all grown. Terry's sons are married with children. My middle daughter just got married to an architect last month (a lovely Southern wedding, and she was GORGEOUS!), and her husband is really nice. My oldest daughter lives up here; she was living with us for a while but is now on her own. She works in a little antique shop. My son is a senior at Clemson University and will be graduating in May (yea, another trip home!).

My mother and father are still living, though Mama is not well. She has the use of only half of her heart and suffers from severe rheumatoid arthritis. Daddy has had a couple of TIAs. I worry about them both.

Terry's father will be 91 next week; he is still in pretty good health and may outlive my parents. Terry goes to see him almost every week (which is 2 hours one way). They are very close.

Well, that's about it, I guess. It was nice to read about all the nice folks I have gotten to know over the past few years. I generally only take time to write to you around the holidays, though I do occasionally check in throughout the year.

I wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving and a very Merry Christmas (or Happy Hanukkah) and Happy New Year.

I'm about to get some cheese on my burger and didn't know we had this forum! I'm going to turn 60 January 4, 2008 so I'll stick to the major stuff and try and keep this brief.

Call me Jim. I was born in Eighty-Four, PA, an unincorporated crossroads 27 miles southeast of Pittsburgh that is now famous as the home of Eighty-Four Lumber. Grew up and went to college in New Wilmington, PA. Moved to Charlottesville, VA to get my graduate education in economics. Taught economics for a decade at U.Va., Mary Baldwin Colllege, and George Mason University. At 33,found myself starving in a home I couldn't afford in Arlington, VA with a wife, an ex-wife, and four kids; hated to quit teaching, but the money wasn't there. Had some success in the printing and graphic arts business, had a failure in the franchised fast food business (Juicy Lucy's). Retired at 50, played at selling luxury cars for a country club buddy to get my two youngest through college without touching capital. Followed my investments in DFW-area commercial real estate to a new life in McKinney, TX - the seat of Collin County, TX. Unretired and returned to my first love, teaching economics, where I'm as happy as a pig in poop both with my career and my fourth wife who my students say is a dead ringer for the lead singer of the Pussycat Dolls. Better yet, she loves to cook and travel.

I've loved Roadfood joints my whole life and seek them out wherever we go. I'm a big fan of Eastern Carolina 'cue and I'm enjoying "learning brisket" here in the Republic of Texas. I enjoy reading and posting here on everything from broasted chicken to where to eat in Paris.

        Hello everyone.

I was born in New York City in 1954, and lived mostly in the city or near to it for my first 22 years, except for a stint at the University of Buffalo in the '70s, where I acquired a taste for wings and beef on 'weck. I am a paper shuffler for the local government here, and my wife is a computer network specialist.

I have lived in the Miami, Florida area for the last 30 years. I am fond of seaside, down-scale seafood eateries, but there are not as many as there used to be. I also (fortunately!) love Cuban food.

I have long been a fan of the Sterns' columns in Gourmet magazine, and have bought and enjoyed the whole series of regional restaurant books. I joined Roadfood.com over a year ago, but never looked at the forums until very recently. I see that there is a lot of good info here, and I look forward to doing some full reviews of the more funky restaurants and other eateries in the South Florida area, so that I can contribute.

If you know the area, I now live in Cutler Bay, which is about halfway between Miami and Homestead.

I'm from the south shore of Massachusetts. Raised 2 kids, worked in "fast food" growing up, was a waitress for a while when my kids were little. Have also worked as a cook for a few nursing homes.

            Welcome to all the newbies....

Miamidon, I am from Miami, and if memory serves me correct, "The Falls" shopping center is near Cutler Bay?...
I think that was 136th street...
My first date with my ex was at the Fridays there...Oh, way back in 1983....
I grew up in the Westchester area of Miami...

Cutler Ridge, I am very familiar with, but Cutler Bay kinda escapes my blonde brain cells....

Welcome Jim, Lou, Don and Kaylegh. BrightCopper, I think we've talked about this before but I grew up in SC but found out at 30 that all my birth people are from the Seattle area, so we must have been the subjects of some sort of karmic version of Red Rover or something. Nice to meet all you folks!

I am in Cutler Ridge. Cutler Ridge, and the area to the east (Whispering Pines, Lakes by the Bay, Saga Bay) combined and incorporated into the new town of Cutler Bay. I left out of the bio that I spent 3 years here, 9-11 grades. I mostly lived in Sweetwater, and went to Rockway, Coral Park and Southwest. So, I guess you know Arbetter's Hot Dogs?

Everglades Elem, West Miami Jr High, and Coral Park.. (Grad 1972)
Yes.... Arbetters, but I was in love with Royal Castle!
I remember when Sweetwater was the closest place you could go horse back riding!
That was when you still could "go-pick" out on Kendall drive near where Don Carters Bowling was...."sigh"...

Howdy.. I have lurked here on and off for a dog's age.. been posting for a week or so..

My home is central VA; though I find I know more about restaurants, especially roadfood ones, in other places because I don't get to eat out much when I am home.

Having worked at the big red X in the Rochester area for a number of years and traveling back there to visit friends, I have hit a lot of joints up in western NY and the Finger Lakes, so if you want my opinion I am not shy.

but I have also traveled around most of the country and even some in some other countries, and I have definite opinions there as well

Who knows it I will be around much , time will tell. I like this place though.

                      Hello everyone,

I am currently from Westerville, Ohio. I kinda stumbled upon this site by accident quite a while ago and have been just lurking and reading and figured why not join up. So here I am! I've taken some cooking studies in upstate New York long ago and never professionally used them. I'm just your average "wish I could own my own restaraunt" kinda guy. SOMEDAY!
Hope to learn and share here........

New California user here! I've been lurking for quite awhile, whenever I go on road trips or otherwise I always run a search on the forums for ideas. I love good food! Anyhow I finally figured I'd get in on the action. Howdy!

Hi..just asked a similar question elsewhere here. Just saw this thread. There's so much on Roadfood, sometimes you miss a thread or two.
I've been checking daily for about a 1/2 year. My wife says I'm a food nut!
I've lived all my life in New Jersey, both North and South Jersey, but in my 62 years have traveled all over the US and much of Europe. The best thing about travel is trying new food,or variations of favorites. Whether asking a Venetian chef for a recipe..or asking Waffle House who makes their syrup,I'm always trying to learn something about the food I like...I guess it's the teacher in me:I've been teaching for 35 years, but soon retirement will give me time to enjoy my passion for food!
Thanks to the moderators for giving us this forum. Good day or bad,it always is good when I start chating with all of you.
                          Thanks,
                          Lee

Hello my name is Brian and I am a Foodie, I have been a foodie for the past 20 years, But I can stop anytime.....Seriously, I use to cook at some of the great clubs and restaruants in the Palm Beach area and got out of the business about 10 years ago.

I love "international cuisine" and am probably best known for my pasta or rice dishes as well as my crab cakes. I am rather adventurous and I will try almost anything I see someone else eat.

I grew up in Marathon "the heart of the Florida Keys" and now live in North Palm Beach, I travel frequently to Ft. Myers and St. Augustine as well.

My wife Kelli and I would love to meet more locals for possible cooking clubs. I heard Bluemaxxracing makes a mean Peanut Butter and Jelly

Hi hi evryone, my name is George or gabbie (was trying for "gabby" but I guess that name was already taken). Anyhow, I'm in the upper digits as far as age goes but still continue my search for good food. I've lived all over southern Cal and the American southwest for most of my life, where there's a lot of pretty decent road food. However, I'm looking forward to branching out into the east coast when I road trip from Florida to New Hampshire this spring. Hopefully I can snag some good eatin tips. Thanks!

Should have introduced myself before, but I just saw this thread. Not very observant of me.

I was born and raised in Pittsburgh, still live in Pittsburgh but love to travel anywhere there is an ocean, and we usually do several times a year. The Outer Banks and Chincoteague are my favorite places and we have been known to drive six or seven hours each way just to get some good crabcakes on a weekend. Does that make me a Foodie, or just obsessive/compulsive?

I've been a lurker on this board for a couple of years. I especially love the Trip Reports; I hope to be able to post my own Trip Report one of these days. First I have to get the guts to take pictures in a restaurant.

I personally don't like to see a forum with a lot of stickies but a couple 3 or 4 are OK by me.

Hi y'all. I've finally signed up. I'd be the displaced person that MilwFoodlovers talks about - Grew up in Milwaukee, moved to New Orleans, and now I'm back in Milwaukee since Katrina. One day I will go back to live in the city that holds my soul - and my stomach!
I'm a single female - going to be the big 4-0 this year. Having a massive party down in NOLA, and anyone and everyone is welcome. Let me know, 'cause I'm getting group rates at the hotel and private tours. The weekend of Dec. 5th. I know it's a long way away, but I like to be organized about things like this.

Anyway - I love (and miss) my New Orleans foods and restaurants.

Hi - I am originally a half Italian half Polish native of Yonkers NY and have lived in SC, AL and OH. I am presently in the boonies of southern Ohio in Brown County 60 miles or so east of Cincinnati. I am 64 and retired and truck around with some buds weekly all over the Greater Cinci, Dayton, Wilmington and Clermont and Brown County corridors in search of great places to eat. I am partial to Italian foods and ribs and Asian food but down home Southern cooking is also a great passion of mine. I make paella regularly (had a Spanish uncle from Alicante Spain) as well as lasagna and love my crockpot for soups and chilis etc.
