Thanks for the heads up FBM! I have been reading Seftel for years.  Yeah, the bypass really hurt Wickenburg in a lot of ways. The tourists have all but forgotten about us out here.  G.F. says she will consider north Phoenix as a possible destination to look for work. We already drive there once or twice a week to shop. No trader Joe's here. LOL

I'v never understood the fascination of Trader Joe's but they're always busy! To each his own I guess.
There are plenty of restaurants on the North & West side.
North Scottsdale has plenty too!
What does your GF do? Maybe I can offer some suggestions.

Hey Everyone!

My name's Michael, I come from a small town in California, and I'm currently in college.  I'm not very good in the kitchen, (though I can make a fantastic panini!) but I love hearing peoples' food stories : )

Happy posting!

So, I've been posting on here the last few months and hadn't read this thread, so didn't introduce myself until now.  My bad!

I was born in DC, am a lifelong fan of American regional food and the beauty of this country, and have driven 5-1/2 cross-country round trips by car, primarily by I-80, I-40, and I-10, usually traveling with a dog.  My food heritage included my Jewish father from NYC and my Christian mother from Tennessee, and visits to my grandparents' subsistence farm in Tennessee, as well as great delis and bakeries in NYC throughout my childhood.  It led to a broad exposure and appreciation for many different foods and cultures.

I'm also a trained pastry chef (not working, though), and have served as a pie judge at the National Pie Championships in Orlando, FL the past 2 years. Prior to that I worked for NASA and took an early retirement to take care of my aging parents in DC.

So far I haven't attended any of the roadfood festivals because they tend to be on the east coast, and I live in the SF Bay Area and hate flying.  I'm trying to get over that, but I haven't gotten there yet. :(

i've so enjoyed reading the posts and comments from everyone--what a great sense of humor and adventure you all have!

Wow! A judge at the National Pie Championship. That's so great!

Are fried pies allowed?

I don't see anything in the rules prohibiting fried pies!  If they're really fresh they could be some interesting contenders.  In the morning, competitors can either bake pies on site (but there's no way to fry anything there) or drop off the pies that they made elsewhere, so it's unlikely that fried ones would remain warm, but with really tasty fillings, it still could be a very fun thing.  This year someone baked some pop-tart type mini-pies, I think in the "Open" category.  They didn't win, but with the amount of crust needed to encase a small (or fried) pie, it has to be really good, and the filling should balance with the amount of crust.  Hope that answer isn't too nerdy...

mar52:  I don't think of myself as a scientist--just learning by trial and error with a bit more knowledge upon which to experiment!  I guess I know enough to make some decent substitutions or choose (or reject) recipes on the basis of ratios of their ingredients.  It's definitely not 100% successful, though!!!

Thank you both for the warm welcome! :)))

Let me see----You worked for NASA but hate flying???
Guess you weren't an Astronut then huh???
You and Buffetbuster DEFINITELY need to meet somewhere 1/2 way between San Francisco and Pittsburgh and compare notes! There's a place somewhere that has a sour cream raisin  that he likes maybe in Atlantic IA?

Haha--foodbme!  I wouldn't be the only NASA person like that, either. :O  Actually, I'd rather go into space than fly across the country.  Go figure.

Yep--I've been in touch with buffetbuster about pies--told him he should apply to be a judge.  About half the judges are professional food people and half are people who just love pie.  What a deal. :)))

I'm a fan of Iowa--have been there several times.  I'll have to look up Atlantic, now.  KC is about halfway--I've hardly spent any time in Kansas.

Hi Jim, welcome to Roadfood. I lived in Lemont IL for a number of years, so I know your area pretty well. Since fried chicken is your thing, I imagine you've been to both Dell Rhea's Chicken Basket and White Fence Farm, both of which I really like. If you ever get the chance, you should check out the chicken places here in southeastern Indiana, such as the Old Brick Tavern, Wagner's Village Inn and the Fireside Inn... simply amazing fried chicken. Another place you ought to visit is Popolano's in Lansing ( south suburbs. ) It's my favorite chicken place in Chicagoland.

Thanks for the welcome, CB and mar52. I think I'm going to like it here.
Yes I like both WF and DR, and also Harold's. Rip's out west in Ladd is also in my top 5.
If ever in that part of Hoosierland I will check those places out. Poplano's would only be about an hour away for me. Sounds like it might be a nice ride on the scoot.

All this chicken talk has been making me hungry, so I headed up to Dell Rhea's Chicken Basket this morning. It had been a while, but it was still very good. I miss the Harold's that was in Bolingbrook, though.

Hello road food! My name is Joseph, and I live in north Carolina. Really good BBQ down yonder but I haven't had a real Italian meal, a good bagel, real pizza, or fresh bread since I left nj a little more than eight yrs ago. I am in the process of building a gourmet coffee truck. Am so thrilled to be getting into the food truck scene. Hopefully it'll be done in the next couple months. Glad to be here on road food.

Hi Guys,

How are you all? I am based in the UK and have been working closely with Fast Food / delivery based businesses for a while. I thought it would be good to stop by and say hi! Are the majority of you all mobile food vendors? Or is there quite a mix of restaurant pros on here?

One suggestion to everybody: If you are making a post about a specific city or region, put enough in the subject line so people know what you're talking about? "Looking for a German Restaurant" makes more sense if you say, "Looking for a German Restaurant in Nashville, TN". Or, "Tearing Down Smith Street" will not make much sense to 99.9% of the people here. Not too infrequently, I have to look up the poster and see their city of record to have a clue as to where they are talking about.

Hello everyone! I'm recently new on here I just discovered ya'll page today and I am hoping to get to talking with other chiefs/cooks about the way they cook and what inspires them to cook. I have been cooking ever since I was a little girl, something about it inspires me to learn more cultures of food and cooking. I went to culinary school my junior year of high school and wanted to go to school for it but I never got around to it. Now I am getting ready to start school and hopefully have my own restaurant/bakery. I really enjoy doing it all and would like to eventually pass it on down to my kids who also enjoy cooking just as much. My daughter is only 5 and she has learned how to cook, bake, grill, and make candy, my son who is only 4 has learned all of it as well! The kitchen is a great place for family to get together in my opinion. As long as you have a open mind and willing to try new things you cant go wrong in the kitchen!

RE: NEW POSTERS! Introduce yourselves! 2013/06/16 22:58:46 (permalink)
Hi, y'all!  I'm a native Floridian, married with 2 (teen) kids & 3 cats.  Moved around a bit earlier in our marriage as DH was in the Navy but now we're 'home' to stay.
I really do like to cook....it's the CLEAN-UP that gets me! (I guess I'll be losing the dishwasher when my 19 y/old daughter moves out?)
Do have a bit of a CRIMP in my cooking: my 17 y/old son & I were both diagnosed with Celiac Disease last fall.....no WHEAT, BARLEY OR RYE in our diet now.  But my DH & daughter (previously mentioned dishwasher) aren't on a gluten-free diet (I think DD has Celiac, too; but what can a Mother say to her 19 y/old daughter?) so I have what's called a "mixed kitchen".  It's working out ok; I bought new pots & pans (after 20 years the ol' Revere ware was looking pretty bad!) for the gluten free cooking (& they are RED so everyone KNOWS it's for GF)
The trickiest meals are those with pasta.  Have to cook 2 different pots & NOT let the reg. splash into the GF.  Also have to use seperate cooking spoon/fork for each & then when it's time to test I have to give DH or DD a piece of noodle.
And if all THAT wasn't enough, in Jan of this year I was diagnosed with Diabetes.....so NOW I've cut my carbs waaaaaaaaay back.
I've already posted my 2 favorite recipes stories out there (what to do with take home fried chicken, the NEXT day & a multi-pepper steak salad.)
Look forward to learning & meeting all y'all :)
