I don't work in the restaurant industry per se, but I do work as an Electrician that services mainly restaurants, fast-food outlets and service stations (Gas-station).
Really good site you people have here, so good in fact that I usually have to have some food in front of me while viewing this site as it always makes me hungry.
Cheers Guys,
Mike Trump.

I experienced your country on my honeymoon, specfically Nelson and Christchurch on the South Island. Wanted to get to Queenstown and Milford Sound but ran out of time. You are truly blessed living in that country. It's better there.

Hi there:

I am a cranky old guy from Southern Utah. I started and ran a place in Zion Canyon called Oscar's Cafe in '91. I tried to make the place as much like an old fashioned cafe as I could. We sold Burritos, Burgers, Beer, Enchiladas, fish tacos, Pozole, and deli sandwiches on rolls that we baked there, and you could watch your food being made for you across the counter; usually by me.

I sold the cafe a few years ago, and the new owners think that baked salom in dill sauce in a corn tortilla is a fish taco, and they are not even from California. They are big fans of Emaril, or whatever his name is. So if you happen to go there don't blame that on me. Or how salty the Guacamole is or how mild the salsa is. I never salted anything that didn't call for it, and my philosophy was, "If you don't like salsa picante there is always kechup, and if you want salt it is on the table."

These days I spend as much time as I can in Mexico, so that I don't have to put up with what is going on up here, and when I can't be in Mexico I try to do something else that agrees with me.

Nice to meet you all.

Oldskeptic.

Old Guy,
Where was/is your old cafe? We used to get up to the St George/Cedar City area almost every month..in fact we were in the process of buying land in New Harmony when we decided to come east in 1999. During those trips we usually stayed in Hurricane at the older Best Western. Were you near there?
Stop in again here anytime. Nice to have you as part of the site.

I am a retired State Park Ranger in New Jersey, a state that some say is the diner capitol of thw world. I'd say it's at least a contender for that title. I prefer diners and small unpretentious restaurants, but I am also a big fan of Cracker barrel. I also enjoy cooking my own meals, and collect regional cookbooks and cookbooks that are issued by churches, fire dept's, schools, etc as fundraisers. I enjoy ethnic foods, and can be adventurous up to a point (I've had haggis, whale and octopus, but won't eat brains or mountain oysters. The whale was before they were a protected animal).
I love this site, which I came to by way of some of the Sterns' books. Thanks a lot for the great books and website.

Steve

Haven't been "lurking" long, but have just found this forum. I'll admit, I've been a regular poster of a couple of other forums for the last few years. Interesting topics here on roadfood though, especially nice to read the reviews for traveling down the road.

I'm originally from Michigan, but now reside in beautiful Central Virginia. I have been in the restaurant game for 25 years, both FOH and BOH, Hourly, Management and finally an Owner. The most exciting thing I have to share is that my daughter has been accepted to College and we are in the process of selling our restaurant (Sweet Peas Neighborhood Bistro & Pour House) through a National Essay Contest in order to move to Florida where she will be attending school. It's an exciting time for all involved, and I am lookig forward to sharing a "gift" with someone who has a passion for the biz. I would love to chat with anyone who may be interested, and realize there are skeptics among us whe may have some tough questions for me. Most of all, I look forward to getting to know those of you on this forum!

Another casual lurker here...

My real name is Scott, but depending on the person, I also go by Huey, Hubert, Mr. P, Brainiac, Space, Oswald, or Bubba Ray. I'm a Texan by birth, and a Floridian by circumstance for the last 23 years. I was recently told that I'm diabetic, which severely cramps my eating style...save for that visit to the Mesa Grill in Vegas a couple of weeks ago. When I'm not working at my Dilbert-esque job, I like a decent meal, a fine cigar, jazz, poker, stand-up comedy, sports video games, a good World War II movie, and I'm convinced I should have grown up in Rat Pack era Vegas.

I'm a 31-year-old perpetual optimist...maybe to a fault...who would rather make minimum wage in a job I love as opposed to three times what I earn now in a job I hate. Call me crazy.......

I'm not so much a new poster as a rare poster. I am Charles, but most people call me by middle name which I hate, so I'm not telling you what it is. I am also called Cat by some people. It started out as Cat-Boy, but has since been shortened, I suppose because I am almost 40 and the use of "boy" is pushing it.

I am a semi-employed gardener (and by that, I mean gardener, not landscaper or something else lofty like that) who lives in Northern California. I like food and I like naps, which is probably why I identify with the cat so well.

I am single and that will not change without subterfuge or drugs.

I know that California is the subject of many negative comments around here, most relating to the overuse of cilantro and avocados (entirely true), but there is good food to be found in California. I live in the East Bay in an area with a huge and varied Middle Eastern population, and all of them are represented in restaurants. In addition, there are taco places in the Mission district of SFO that are top-notch. Oh, the restaurants in SFO . . . And in Oakland you can get decent BBQ or even chicken and waffles.

As I said, I do not post regularly, but I have benefitted from restaurant suggestions and recipes from others who do.

Hello all.
I'm 30 years old of Mexican descent, married and a mom of two who stays home. I don't like to say "I don't work" because for those of you who do stay home with the kids you know exactly what I'm talking about. I love it, though. I like being home and taking care of my kids and my husband.
I live in south texas and have a Bachelor's in Anthropology...i meant to go into forensics but kids and family kind of changed things around.
I LOVE food. I LOVE to eat. I can easily enjoy a meal of steak and potatoes with a salad as I will a homemade tortilla slathered with butter.
I try not to eat out too much though because it can be expensive especially on one income. So I really try to cook everyday, two or three times a day!! *whew* But when we do go out to eat it's usually hole-in-the-wall places--the best!
I love all fried foods, pork chops and fried chicken are tied at#1 and I can easily drink two quarts of sweet iced tea a day!! *bad girl!*
I don't remember how I got on this site but I'm still learning my way around it, please be patient if I post something that has already been discussed before.
Oh and my favorite foods aside from those I mentioned above; not in any order:

hot dogs
any kind of bread or roll
tamales
chicken alfredo
Manwich
pizza
juicy cheeseburgers
steak with fat on it
bbq: brisket and sausage specifically

Yvette

Another infrequent poster here...although in fairness, that may be about to change! My wife and I recently retired from our jobs as symphony muscians, so we now have time on our hands.

We both love to take road trips..most of our travels so far have been to Wisconsin (we both grew up there and are thinking of moving back) and our long annual pilgrimages to the West...usually the Rockies are the destination, all the way from Colorado to the Canadian border. Even traveling the interstates we stop in the small towns to check out the local restaurants...we have friends that think we're crazy to plan mileage, stops, etc. around eating, but hey...that's what we like! The Lake Superior Circle Tour is on the list for this fall, and the southwest and Maine won't be too far behind.

Anyway..looking forward to spending more time here, both reading and contributing!

Another newbie to Roadfood...

I'm 24 and a graduate student in Northeast Tennessee (Tri-Cities area.) I'm currently working on my Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences, most likely concentrating my studies in either forensic or clinical toxicology. We'll see. haha I was born and raised just outside of Indianapolis but came down here 5 1/2 years ago for my undergrad and never left. :-) Wonderful area! Anyway, I love to cook and learn new things... my favorite is baking, but I'm learning to make other things as well. Glad to "meet" everyone here!

YellowstoneLoon,

Welcome to Roadfood.com. I think you will enjoy the Lake Superior Circle Tour. Three towns you MUST plan to stop in for an overnight are Grand Marias, Michigan and Rossport, Ontario and Grand Marais, Minnesota. There are many others but plan those three as destination stops. You won't be disappointed for character and good roadfood stops.

The Circle Tour is a wonderful trip with so many interesting towns and places to visit. The only downside is when Minnesota widened and took some of the kinks out of Rte. 61, they took the road away from some of the beautiful views of Superior. Also this stretch of road is heavily traveled by large trucks flying along from the taconite mines. They can be pretty scary.

Hello to all, I have been visiting the Roadfood site for about a year but only to look at the reviews never went on the "threads" until very recently. Raised in CT and did 12 years in the Navy right after HS and then ended up right back where I started not that I mind actually I thought at first I would hate coming back home (14 years ago) but it all worked out, I had the opportunity to live in and travel to many places in my service years so I guess that's why I like this sight, oh yeah I love food too.

Well I wasn't feeling very creative when I registered and didn't see this so I guess after being registered and an infrequent poster over the last year or so, I'll make my late introduction.

mlinkinhoker - aka Music City Missy, Missy, Mel, or my given name, Melissa. Live in Brentwood, the southern suburb of Nashville. Moved here from the place I was born and raised, Jackson, MS in 1987. I am a construction project manager. Married to Jeff. One daughter almost 16 (YIKES!) and two stepsons - 29 and 31.

I grew up in firehouse kitchens, country kitchens and Greek diners. I started cooking early in life - everything from good old country down home food to trying anything and everything I saw in the magazines and my grandmother's McCall's cookbook. By my teens I had graduated and gone to even more gourmet cooking. At age 17, I had my own catering business and have continued to do a little catering here and there including my first movie (a short) last year - that was fun to see my name on the big screen!

I love nothing more than cooking for people - there is nothing you can do to show your care and love more than cooking for people. And the most wonderful things happen when people get together around food - look at how much fun we had the friendships made here and last Saturday on the RoadFood tour of Nashville!

A couple of years ago I decided to finally get a college degree so I am a couple of courses away from having my culinary arts degree and my first level of certification from the American Culinary Institute. And yes I was having a fit Sunday when we were checking in the chefs at the Sheraton Music City and the dogs were running around having their accidents everywhere - we had our trade show in the room where the dog show was as well as our lunch yesterday - I sure hope they shampooed the carpets Sunday night! That has been bothering me all week.

Hope to have a chance to meet more of you and if you are vern in the Nashville area - let me know

Mel,
Welcome (officially) to Roadfood!!!

Our two Scotties were very concerned about the dogs that were at the hotel for the dog show. We always walk them some distance from any human walk-way to 'exercise' them...but the dog show people took dozens of dogs to the edge of the sidewalk just 10 feet from the main entrance and "Let 'em Rip". That area did look a bit like a busy barnyard by Sunday Morning.
I will say the Hotel was way-more than accomodating for the pets in tow.

All those beige and white dogs looked down their show-dog noses at our Scotties. I am sure our dogs were the butt of many ethnic jokes by the dogs in the show! But that's ok. Our dogs were recognized as Official Roadfood Travelers, and that beats a dog show everytime.
Glad to meet you and hope your trade show went well.

Hi all. I've been reading threads and reviews for about a year now and over time I've really gotten hooked on this site and many of the folks who contribute to it. I've always been fascinated by food but only an average cook. It's really fun to read other people's recipes and try them out!

I grew up in Barrington, IL in the '40s and '50s. Went to college in Virginia and Ohio. Taught in Ohio for a few years and moved to Prescott, AZ to help my dad in his business (wholesale cut flowers). We have one son who is a LCDR in the Navy and is in the Middle-East right now.

Next year, when I retire, we would love to do lots of travelling and try out many of the wonderful sounding roadfood restaurants that I've read about here!

Welcome to Roadfood Lynn! I grew up in nearby Algonquin in the 50's back when all that was still "country". Did you ever go to Simonini's in Algonquin?

Klando - Yes, I do remember Simonini's, it was one of my mom's favorites! Do you remember Lucky Simonini and her harp? Someone once told me that they called her Lucky because she was the only girl and had lots of brothers. Do you know if they are still open? Thanks for the welcome!

Desertdog - Thanks for the welcome! Do you ever get to Prescott Valley? If you do, have you tried Zekes? The have wonderful burgers, especially the patty melt, and huge portions of everything!

Lynn, all the Simonini's had nicknames, Lucky's one brother was called Tubby and used to be a pitcher for the White Sox. Lucky was involved with show business so I always thought the name came from that. The restaurant burned many years ago and was never revived. Lucky and one of her brothers went on to manage a place in McHenry, Tubby worked for the Kane County Cougars, a class A baseball team in Geneva, Il as a goodwill ambassador. "Sims" as everyone called it, was very popular with Chicago sports stars of the time.

Kland0 - Thanks for the information about Simonini's. I haven't been there for about 44 years and always wondered! Along the same lines, do you remember Farman's in Lake Zurich? Always seemed to be a big hangout for the jockeys from Arlington Park. I got a bunch of autographs when I was about 12 (including Johnny Longdon's). Good to talk to someone from home! I left there when I was 18 and never really got back except for a few vacations. Also hung out with friends at Massi's in Dundee when I was home from school. Good pizza!

Is that the place at the far end of a shopping center on your left as you come in from the freeway? I went to a place around there for breakfast a couple years back, some great B&G as I remember.

I'll have to check it out. I am a huge Patty Melt fan, although I always seem to end up in the Prescott Brewing Company when I am up that way.

Desertdog - The Zeke's I'm talking about is in Prescott Valley, not Prescott, and is in its own building. They consistantly have the best patty melt I've ever had. I'll have to try the B&G. It's across from the Harkins Theater on Center Court. I agree about Prescott Brewing Company - it's my favorite! Specially love their crab cakes and fish n chips. We live in Prescott Valley but I work in Prescott so I have been to most of the restaurants except the newer ones around the plaza - they change hands so often I can't keep up!

When I grew up in Algonquin, we all went to Dundee High (which doesn't exist anymore) so Masi's was our hangout! Small world. I moved about 30 miles south in the early 70's but my dad was in Algonquin unitl 2002 when he passed away. Another good memory that is still there and going strong is Port Edward, wonderful seafood, right on the Fox River. Masi's still exists but only as a carry out in a different location.

I should probably have done this first thing off...

Catalase- the username is a biology joke. It's the enzyme that allows you to breathe oxygen and not die, by turning the hydrogen peroxides that tend to form into water and oxygen. Most of my online handles shorten to "Cat", which is my RL nickname to a lot of people, so there you have it.

Born and raised in Phoenix, Arizona, spent four years in college studying biology in New Orleans, now resident in Los Alamos, New Mexico. I didn't discover the joys of the roadfood ethos until I was in my twenties, but now my first question when traveling (and just about the only way to get me to do it) is "Where and what can I eat?" I have a mental checklist of regional specialties I absolutely must try if/when I get the chance. It's, um, long. As for cooking, I have a simple relationship with my husband- he does the cooking and I do the research. I can trawl for food porn as long as some young men can for the regular kind.

No kids, but we do have a delightfully psychotic Siamese cat and one Akita dog, plan to add another one of those when the right litter or rescue comes along.

Hello everyone! I happened to find myself here after googling "special edition M&Ms" and now I could spend a good hour just reading all the threads here. I feel like I might be one of the youngest ones here im 25.

Hi! My name is Phil Foreman and I guess I have been interested in food since Momma put her...; uhhh, we won't go there. I found this terrific site while looking for something or the other on Google and thought I'd give it a peek; glad I did! I've posted the adress informally on my own web site and the response has been very good. At Ohio Camp Cooks we strive to preserve the historic methods of gathering, processing, and preparing foods for the table as well as document the current technology and trends. We are a mixed bag of sportsmen, cooks, chefs, historic re-enactors who all share two qualities: (1) a love for the out doors (2) a love for good food. The staff and members here have done a terrific job with this site and I'm sure that our membership will appreciate their visits.

I visited your website. How about adding some food pics?

I'm going to go back and visit the forums and things when I have more time.

Oh, sorry, and WELCOME TO ROADFOOD!

Hey, all!

Sean here. I've been lurking for years now, but a back condition limited the amount of time I could spend online. Now my work station has an internet connection -- so much for the work part of work station.

I'm a wannabe writer/artist (I've had enough success so that it doesn't seem like a fantasy, but not enough to make it seem like a living -- if you want a taste of my older work, just Google Sean Craven and you'll probably find something.) and former manual laborer. I'm also that rarity of rarities -- a native Californian. My family's been here since it was all missions and Russians, and as a result I'm less the granola-type Californian and a bit more of a redneck type. I've been called a cryptohick...

I'm currently balancing school and personal projects (a novel and an online comic strip are in the works), have been with the missus for nineteen years, have two nieces, a granddaughter and a grandson, and play bass guitar for relaxation.

I don't travel much, but my dad and I hike all over the Bay Area and lunch goes along with the walk. We tend to prefer Roadfood-type places, particularly hamburger joints.

The real importance of this site for me is the inspiration for my cooking. I'm one of those nutjobs that likes to make things from scratch, likes to try and expand his menu from time to time. I owe my barbecue, my biscuits and gravy (I use both condensed milk and fresh sage. Sorry about that.), and my current approach to mac and cheese to this site and y'all.

I promise to be on my best behavior. Such as it is.
