NEW UPDATES AS OF THU 10/24....Roadfood Tour in New York City - Saturday, October 26, 2013

Greetings fellow Roadfooders!!  I'd love to put together another tour of the city I have called "home" for the past 10 years and I've been doing some research to create what I hope will be a great day of walking, sightseeing and epic eating!  Some possible dates that currently work for me are:  SAT 08/17, 08/24, 08/31, 09/07, 09/14, 09/21 10/05 and 10/26.  I also have dates in October and November but just wanted to put this out there and see who might be interested.  A number of these places open around 8am and others open at 11:30am so I figure we could knock out a few in the morning and some more in the afternoon.  Most of these are fairly small and don't take reservations but depending on the size of the group I don't think we should have any problems.  The only place that I think we should get to right when they open is Lombardi's as they usually have a line but getting there around 11:15am should make for a short wait.

Let the comments begin...

    billyboy-
NYC is a very inexpensive flight from PIT.  I am not ready to give a yes for sure, but if I don't already have another trip planned for the weekend you choose, then I'm in.

This is very interesting to me, but I can't make any specific commitments on dates. I know that we'll be unavailable 8/17 and 9/14, but we're also trying to plan some other trips in that time. But whether we can come or not, it sounds great.

It's possible to join you for part of the tour.
We'll be busy the weekend of 8/17 (visiting buffetbuster in Pittsburgh) and on Labor Day weekend we'll be staying local.

Late September would probably be best for us

I'd be interested...and I'd try to recruit folks to catch a Broadway musical while we're there.

My apologies folks.  I don't know why I put down 09/14 and 09/21 as viable dates.  I have my annual half marathon in my hometown the weekend of 09/14 and the NJ Hot Dog Tour is on Sat. 09/21 and I don't want to have conflicting tours.

I've added Oct. 5th and Oct. 26th as possible dates as well.

We are in if the dates work out - currently mid-august through 9/7 weekend are not available. I love NYC in the fall!

I agree, Tony.  Far too long!  I remember the one in Nov. 2010 was a beautiful day and the fall really is gorgeous here.  So, with that in mind, I propose to have this Roadfood shindig in October.  Either Saturday Oct. 5th or Saturday Oct. 26th.  Please let me know which date(s) are good and I'll see if one of them works for a majority.  Thanks!!!

Either of those dates will likely work for me.
I'll check with Sandra. We had talked about doing a weekend in Vermont in October but heading to NYC instead would be just as fine.

OKAY!  Let's go with Saturday October 26th.  I'm thinking 9:00am for a start time at Sylvia's in Harlem for some killer soul food! And then we can work our way south.

Lori, my girlfriend & I see many shows and the musicals we've seen and love (that are currently playing) are:  Jersey Boys, Pippin (Patina Miller & Andrea Martin are AMAZING!!), Kinky Boots (super awesome!!), The Book of Mormon, and Newsies.  I know you're Ralph's wife.  I live vicariously through your Trip Reports, wonderful pics and snappy writing.  You both inspire me.

agnesrob, no fee for the tour.  Just the cost of getting in and out of NYC, a subway pass and whatever food/drink you want to buy.

karilyn, so glad you can make it!

Billy, go right a head and walk by Yohan and tell him your not going to try one of his Knishes...... I bet you could run in and buy a few hot Knishes, cut them up in small pcs, with a dip into mustard....now the next block with Russ & daughters smoked fish OMG, thin slices of smoked salmon with soft cream cheese on a bagel bite, small bites with a great flavor of the area.............I think you need a person to run a head to set up some tasting trays..............The owner of Katz's is a great guy, real proud of his food, he s/b. I told him his pastrami was the best in the world. When I walked up to order, I thought about what you said about the beef brisket, I told myself, Billy knows his food. I was ready to order, the carver was looking at me, I yelled,PASTRAMI RUEBEN ON RYE WITH MUSTARD sorry Billy, I tried with all my heart, but I just couldn't say beef Brisket..........the fat on the pastrami has more flavor than most other pastrami has in the meat.....good food Billyboy, made from the heart....

pnwchef, I do love those knishes at Yonah Schimmel's.  I did go to Russ & Daughters last year with friends and couldn't stand the smell.  Of course, I didn't grow up eating "appetizing" and have been somewhat of a "fish frowner" for many decades so my reaction wasn't altogether surprising.
    Tasting trays, hmmm....
Love Katz's so much and I walk away from that place more and more impressed every time.  It IS hard to deviate at Katz's and when I was last there with The Travelin' Man I had to push myself to not get the pastrami reuben again and try the brisket.  Mustard on the reuben?  How was that?  I'd think it would get in the way of the sauerkraut and russian dressing!  I made the mistake of getting mustard on the brisket last time as I had forgotten they have squirt bottle on the tables so you can add it at your leisure.

"...the fat on the pastrami has more flavor than most other pastrami has in the meat.....good food Billyboy, made from the heart..."  Truer words never spoken.  How was the rest of your trip?  Are you and the family still traveling?

Billy, I order the Reuben with mustard not 1000 island, I know it's not a true Reuben but that's the way I like it...I always made them that way in our food services also. the only thing different was we grilled them. I am in Philly, loved the RT, the Italian mkt is a gem, feels like the 1940's in NYC, only it was in Philly....I liked Philly more than I thought. I would......We are off to Washington DC this morning.....we stayed at the Casablanca Hotel on 43rd bt 6th & 7th great place to stay, the suites are wonderful and quiet, walk outside the world is at your feet.........Take care Billy, your food sounds great for the tour, I just had to give you a hard time about the other places.........P.S. We all loved The Lion King, nothing like seeing it Broadway.

This does sound like so much fun. We can't commit for sure yet, but I think we'll be able to make it work.

Pippin tops my current list of "things I'd love to see on Broadway" because the circus staging just looks amazing. We've seen the Lion King on tour, but I'm sure it's even more amazing in New York! :)

The official Roadfood tour is and always will be my first priority.  But, I don't see any reason why I can't do both.  If you feel pretty solid about that date, then I will start looking into flights.  BTW, it would most likely be just me, since Mariton will be in the Philippines in October and Cousin Johnny would most likely have a hard time getting consecutive weekends off.

Billy, you might want to take this thread to private messages.

The longer it stays public the more chance there is that Mayor Bloomberg will push for an ordinance limiting the number of eateries that can be visited in a day...
