NJ Ice Cream Tour?

Has there ever been an "organized" tour of great ice cream spots in NJ? I just did the 4th Annual NJ Hot Dog Tour and had a ball.
I started wondering if there would be any interest in the same thing for the sweet stuff.

Sounds like this might be the place to debate the subject!
I see one vote for the Double Dipper...
I can't remember the name of the place right now on Rt 10 in Ledgewood but it's great.

I found this site online while googling for a Rutt's Hut Menu. Scroll past all the drool inducing pictures, and there is a NJ Ice cream review. Plus, alot of great NJ suggestions for food. Never saw this site before! Wonder if he is a Roadfooder, too! ?? Sue

    Hello all ,

This is certainly an interesting idea .
I'd be interested in attending , have some experience in the organizing but have no idea what places would be good.

I had found the Ice Cream thread on Off the Broiler a while back and just today I checked out Van Dyk (he spelled it Van Dyke, but the sign outside says Van Dyk) in Ridgewood. I had never heard of this place until that article. Totally bare bones operation, just a walk-in with a counter, no seats inside or outside. Ice cream was really good.

    Here's a better link:

    http://offthebroiler.wordpress.com/2007/08/17/nj-dining-2007-summer-ice-cream-parlor-guide/#more-1548

Another place that flies under the radar is Guernsey Crest in Paterson. It looks more like a check cashing place than an ice cream destination. Run down neighborhood, grafitti on the walls, and they serve you thru a plexiglass partition. It's been there for 75+ years. But the best Ice Cream soda I've ever had. Again, no seats inside or outside.

I'd probably pass on a all day Ice cream tour, I do like Ice cream as an occasional treat, but not to the extent that I like hot dogs, pizza, wings etc. After one or two stops I'd be about done. --Ken

I would love to do this tour. The only potential problem I see is it is winter and some of the places may be closed...BUT FOR SPRING, well, I will help plan it just let me know where we want to go...

Email me and I will start to plan for the spring...

I rarely post here, but this thread inspired me...a few suggestions:

Mark and Julie's on Pleasant Valley Way in W. Orange has THE. BEST. COFFEE. CHIP. Anywhere. And trust me-I've had my share of coffee ice cream!

Denville Dairy on the main street in 'downtown' Denville (off of Rts. 53, 46, and 80) still makes some of the best ice cream in NNJ in my opinion...and believe it or not, even their soft-serve is excellent!

Polar Cub on Route 22 in the Whitehouse/readington NJ area is one of my favorites. Also Hoffmans down the shore is very good also. Sundaes down in the South Toms River route 9 corridor is very good too!

Down-the-shore. Spoken like a true son of Jersey.

If you wanna do it all in one place, plan on July 19, Tom's Tover, NJ:

i grew up in Toms River from 6 months old until i was about 33 yo and was never able to make an ice cream festival in all the years that it has been going on. They also do a chili fest there that i miss every year too. Too much stuff going on in the Summer...

Down the road is Hoffman's.(another place, and their competition),that in several locations has been making their own ice cream on premises. My wife says their pistachio is perfect!

I'm up for an ice cream tour! IMO, it should only be places with HOMEMADE ice cream...
not places that have cute names , but just use Breyers or Jack and Jill...

    kozel,
I vaguely remember Dowd's (mostly through stories from my parents). I'd say it's been gone 20+ years now, been a McD's there for as long as I can remember.

I'd be interested in an ice cream tour. I agree with Hoffman's. There's also the Beach Plum in bradley Beach, Ice Cream on 9 in Howell (they have a rediculous amount of flavors at any time, possibly pushing 100 different ones, but I haven't been there since last summer) and all homemade. There's also Jersey Freeze on Route 9 in Freehold for great soft serve and great food. But I read the family sold the property and they will be building one of my all time Favorite!! restaurants (please hear the extreme sarcasm) the Olive Garden. (Dave get off your soapbox this is an ice cream forum. But it's NJ there's real Italian food here. Dave stop it..behave.) Sorry I'll try to be good. When I lived in NNJ several years ago there was a very good homemade ice cream shop on Bloomfield Ave in Caldwell called Gelotti homemade ice cream. It was really good and I think it's still there.

    Hi all,

A few friends of mine want to do a Motorcoach Bus Tour to Ben and Jerrys in Vermont . I would have to check the miles , etc , but I'm told it can be done in one day .
My thougths are a pick up in Jersey , get up to Vermont and back by evening .
If there is interest I will look into prices .
I also have access to a 8 pass van we can use if a motorcoach is to big.
So lets see what comes here and I will start a new thread if need be.

O'Dowds was on Rt 46 in Pine Brook.  It was near the old Pine Brook auction.  Both long gone.  I still fondly remember going there with my parents when I was young.  the sundae's were the best I have ever had.  Ice Cream ranks up there in my book right next to hot dogs.
