NW Indiana / Southern Michigan Mon, 08/17/09 12:39 PM (permalink)
Hi, All...

We've got a weekend wedding roadtrip to Detroit coming up in mid-October that will take us through NW Indiana and across Southern Michigan.  I'm looking for some recommendations of good places to eat along the way (we'd be going out on Friday and coming back on Sunday).

I've already pulled these out as possibilities:

Teibel's, US-30 & Hwy 41, Schererville, IN
Village Inn, 107 S Main St, Middlebury, IN
Angelo's , 1100 E. Catherine, Ann Arbor, MI
Jefferson Market & Cakery,609 W Jefferson, Ann Arbor, MI
Lafayette Coney Island, 118 W Lafayette Blvd, Detroit, MI
Northside Grill,1015 Broadway St, Ann Arbor, MI
Zingerman's Deli, 422 Detroit St, Ann Arbor, MI
Zingerman's Roadhouse, 2501 Jackson Rd., Ann Arbor, MI

Any feedback on those or any other ideas?  We'll likely take 94 from Chicago to Detroit, but if the stop is interesting enough, we could take 90 east and 69 north.  Thanks for any suggestions!

I have eaten at the Village Inn in Middlebury 3 or 4 times and the food is excellent.

The following is a variety of restaurants not too far off your route if you travel I-90 and I-69.  I will let you decide if any of them sound good enough for a stop.

If you like Mexican food, you really should exit I-94 at US 41 and head south several miles to Jalapeno's Mexican Restaurant in Schererville IN. It's on 41 and you can't miss the giant jalapeno pepper by the side of the road. They have the best Mexican food that I've ever eaten, and I'm a picky so n' so. Be sure to order their great homemade green salsa on the side; it's a buck extra but definitely worth it ( caution: hot! )

when in Kalamazoo, I normally get a burger at the Corner Bar.  Great burgers, good beer selection.  http://www.cornerbarandgrill.com/

and I always get some donuts at Sweetwaters.  http://www.sweetwatersdonuts.com/index.php

Clementines Too in St. Joseph is good.  Get onion rings as an appetizer.  Try the Red Rooster entre:  Strawberry glazed charbroiled chicken breast with walnuts and feta cheese with sides of broccoli and rice.

            Can be pretty busy.

              Angelo's , 1100 E. Catherine, Ann Arbor, MI
Good Breakfast Spot. It will be packed on a weekend morning. On gameday, forget about it.

Northside Grill,1015 Broadway St, Ann Arbor, MI
Absolutely not worth a stop. Completely unremarkable in every way.

Zingerman's Deli, 422 Detroit St, Ann Arbor, MI
An Ann Arbor institution. Expensive, but good sandwiches.

Zingerman's Roadhouse, 2501 Jackson Rd., Ann Arbor, MI
              Solid dinner spot. Barbecue.

I endorse your choice of Teibel's to start your trip. One of the places I immediately thought of when I first saw your post was Turkeyville, in Marshall , Michigan. Glad to know it is still around, since it has been a few years since we have been there. But  a place I would go out of my way to visit once again, if I were in the area.

All the other suggestions are great as well. But on your return trip, I would like to suggest another NWI institution that has not been around for as long as Teiblel's, but has been well established for years, never the less...... The Stongbow Inn, In Valparaiso, Indiana.

While in Detroit a must try is the Polish Village Cafe,2990 Yemans, Hamtramck. The Polish Plate is huge, with Sausage, piroge, and stuffed cabbage. They also serve good gulosh and chiken livers. Most expensive item on the menu is $8.00

Funny enough, I just took a trip from Ann Arbor out to Hamtramck and ate at Polonia (right next door to Polish Village Cafe) tonight with some friends. There were 4 of us, and we ate just about 1 of everything on the menu (a slight exaggeration, but we ordered a ton of food -- an entree each, plus 3 (near entree-sized) appetizers for the table, some sides, dinner came with soup... you get the picture) AND a couple pitchers of beer, and the total bill was $84 and change.

I mean, if we weren't drinking, that bill is $60, and if we didn't order WAY too much food, the bill for 4 would probably have been around $40-45.

                    AND the food was delicious.

We'll definitely be headed back to that area to check out the other Polish places. Next up will certainly be Polish Village Cafe.

Polish Village has a little bigger menu and a lot more atmosphere. I have never eaten at Polonia.  The one time that I tried, after eating and drinking at P.V. they were closing and wouldn't let us in. Another good food place is Under the Eagle on Jos Campo, like eating in Grandma's living room.
