NY Times Rates Kettle Brand Chips #1

In the July 4 2007 issue of the NY Times, Kettle Brand Lightly Salted Potato Chips were declared the
best potato chip in America as rated by the Dining Section staff's taste test.

The test was among national and strong regional brands. Nine of the top ten were kettle style chips.
Cape Cod Kettle Chips were rated number 2 in what seemed like a close race. Since the article came out, I have been conducting my own taste test between the top two and throwing in number 10, Wise Natural as well.

Wise, the only non-kettle style was disappointing, most of the chips were broken, tasted salty, with
little potato flavor coming through. Kettle Brand Chips were enjoyable with a huge crunch factor and
plenty of Russet potato flavor. A very good chip, but I am unconvinced that Russets are the best potatoes for chips. Due to the high starch factor in Russets, they come out looking burnt although they are not. It does detract from visual appeal though.

In my taste test Cape Cod was the clear winner, with better taste, use of a single oil (Canola), great visual appeal and a light salt profile.

The NY Times taste test is no longer online, but you can download the article in .pdf format on the Kettle Brand site: http://www.kettlefoods.com/

I would like to hear your thoughts and opinions, especially if you do your own taste tests.
