Nashville Hot Fish Sandwiches Thu, 01/18/07 5:25 PM (permalink)
My first hot fish sandwich in Nashville was in 1976. I was hooked then and I still am. I am not certain the type of fish but they sure are good. I am sure that Poverty Pete can expound on this.

My first one was just off Church St.

It'a nearly always whiting, not completely boneless, but nearly so. In some places you can order catfish, but I think whiting makes for a better sandwich.

          Dearfolk,
I'll be waiting to see what turns up on this thread... my mental hook is baited; my line is readied.

Poverty, I think Whiting is on the mark. What makes them so hot. I guess it is the sauce??

Where are we going to go in April??

Are the hot fish similar to the Hot Chicken I've read about here?? (been craving them big time)..

Vic, it's not at all the same thing. Nashville hot chicken is usually pan fried and heavily dusted with cayenne pepper. Nashville's hot fish is breaded and deep fried, then served on white bread with mustard, hot sauce, pickles and raw onions. it isn't fiery hot like the chicken. A good fish sandwich is easier to find. Right now, I don't think anybody in Nashville is making hot chicken to the standards of a few years ago.

I am very interested in trying a Nashville hot fish sandwich. I particularly want to see how similar or different it is from the fish sandwiches we have here in Pittsburgh.

Any recommendations on where to get a really good hot fish sandwich in Music City?

Buffet: That is Poverty's or Pogophiles expertise. Perhaps they will respond where to go to get the best hot fish. As I recall, there are several.

Pogo: Great pics and great article. Nashville is the originator of a hot fish sandwich. I had them first in 1976. Super.

Thanks Poverty... Now there's 2 southern meals on my wish list!
Now if someone from the south could translate the term ''crunkest'' to this northener...

"Crunk" is a word made by combining "crazy" and "drunk" or "chronic" and "drunk", depending on who you ask. I'm thinking that "crunkest", in this useage, would be a qualitative reference indicating "the good stuff" or possibly something you will crave when you're really messed up.

Thanks for the link. It is certainly different looking than what I expected. Since I am on the morning Roadfood tour, we apparently will be visiting one of these places, so I am looking forward to that.

I am going to be in Nashville for a few days this Spring. Looks like a fish sandwich is a must, along with Sir Pizza!

Would still like to see some locals chime in, on their favorites places to grab one.

I used to think "crunk" was the past tense of starting a car. It used to drive my family crazy.
We do have a couple of hot fish sandwich vendors(indivduals)here, only on weekends and on the roadside. I can never seem to get to the right place at the right time to try one. Haven't given up though.

Hey guys, I managed to find this post when I google'd "nashville fish sandwich". I'm a local (born and raised) but I'm young, only 24. I love seafood and I'm looking for a great fish sandwich place here. My fav fish has got to be Mahi Mahi + I just got back last night from the gulf and had a fish sandwich at LuLu's in Gulf Shores that was to die for! Any suggestions anyone!!?!?!?!
