Nashville and Memphis Wed, 04/21/10 11:17 AM (permalink)
I will be in Nashville for five days and Memphis for two. I have read mixed reviews on Loveless and I personally did not love Interstate in Memphis. Could I get musts for both locations. I am certain to visit the Rendevous again!

Thanks in advance.

From Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

    In Memphis

    One and Only BBQ

    Alex's Tavern for excellent hamburgers

Au Fond Farmtable for excellent locally grown produce and meats (breakfast and lunch)

We had an utterly splendid meal at Pancake Pantry in Nashville.

If I had five days in Nashville (doesn't that sound wonderful!), I would absolutely hit Pancake Pantry, Sylvan Park (the Murphy Road location) and Arnold's Country Kitchen.  All three are reviewed here on Roadfood and are outstanding!

My favorite bbq in Memphis is Cozy Corner and I love Barksdale for breakfast.

I'm impressed you still like Cozy Corner after they didn't have pulled pork on your last visit.

              +1 On Arnold's!

The roast beef will make you cry... It's all great country cooking, with nothing from a can.

If you want some excellent Italian, go to one of the Grisanti Restaurants.  There are two by the name of Bolla Pasta.  Best in town  If you want a meat and three, go to the Cupboard on Union.  Excellent

Yeah, all the Nashville locations mentioned are fine. Make sure you try Prince's or Bolton's for hot chicken in Nashville. IN Memphis hit the Gus's Chicken location that is located just off of Beale.

                      Memphis:
Cozy Corner (closed Mondays) for the BBQ Bologna
Germantown Commissary for Ribs & Pulled Pork (Skip the Rendevous)
Jerry's Sno Cones (they've got decent food but the sno cones & soft serve are great)
If you want good Italian then go with Fino's from the Hill (Lunch) or Dinos. Both small family run joints
Central BBQ is also good. So is Neely's on Mt. Moriah (great big pork sandwich) Theres some awesome Taqueritas up off the Summer/Macon area (Mikes is one of them even though its a very white name!)
Breakfast would be either The Pancake House or Bryants Breakfast (Three Little Pigs has a good breakfast too)
Awesome dive (although its very College fratboy now sadly) is the P&H Cafe (best burgers)
Alex's tavern is a great place to get a late night meal (I think they serve food till 4AM or later). I've only had their wings. They do a greek wing (and burger).
Theres also a ton of good Vietnamese places in midtown. Couple good Thai places (JaJa's in Collierville)

                      Nashville:
                      Prince's Hot Chicken
Theres a little BBQ joint right off Centennial Park that I found when I was working there last year & walking around the park. Its a walk up kind of joint that had decent food. Cool place
                      Rotiers (Meat & 3)
Hit one of the Taco trailers last week when I was there. It was right beside the Twice the Ice machine right off Nollensville Pike close to Harding Place. Awesome! You know you're at a good taco joint when you're the only gringo within 10 miles & they've got an old car blasting mexican polka music sitting there for entertainment! You really cant go wrong with any of the taco trailers up Nolensville Pike or Harding Place.

Just got back. Some thoughts. Top three were Prince's Hot Chicken, Martin's BBQ and Rendezvous in Memphis. Top three no doubt for where we ate. Rotier's is pretty good. Loveless had great jams and biscuits and Elliston had interesting fried bologna. We went to Prince's twice. Best Chicken and Beans I've ever had and the chef I was with agreed. Martin's, which is nearby, was also really good. We had Redneck tacos that were spectacular. Slaw and sauce with pulled pork on the top of a hoecake. Rendezvous was typically very good, but since we were only in Memphis one day, I can't comment on other places other than I didn't think Interstate was that good when I ate there two years ago. I wanted to do Cozy in Memphis and eat pimento at Henpeck. I did not do meat and threes since I have already had it.

Oh yeah, BE Scott's in Lexington was catering something on Saturday and had no food. Luckily, we only wasted an hour or so for that.
