Nashville to Harrisburg

First of all, we're from Texas, so we don't know this area.

Secondly, we have to travel from Nashville to Harrisburg in one day, so we don't have much time for lunch.

Any suggestions about which route has a better lunch stop and/or is more scenic?

I-65/71 up through Louisville, Cincinnati and Columbus?

Or I-40/81 up through Knoxville, and Roanoke?

Thanks!

I-81 thru the Shenandoah Valley is a very nice drive. But the parallel Blue Ridge Parkway is magnificent this time of year- or any time of the year. Trouble is it has a 45mph speed limit so you need to give yourself an extra hour or two - but it is worth it. Pack a nice picnic lunch and eat it at some scenic overlook along the Blue ridge...

    Karen,
If you elect to take I-81, get off and go into Morristown, Tennessee and stop at The Little Dutch Restaurant on South Cumberland Street - the old U. S. 25 business route. You'll thank me.
By the way, The Ridgewood isn't that far from I-81. You'll find their writeup in Tennessee.
Closeby, Ort. Carlton in Athens, Georgia.

I'm not familiar with the I-65/I-71 route, but I am familiar with I-40/I-81, and I can tell you that there are a number of good places to eat along that way. If you have a taste for some good barbeque in Knoxville, try Calhoun's at 400 Neyland Rd. (865-637-1780). I can also recommend without reservation Dude's Drive-In in Christiansburg, VA. for hamburgers, shakes and fries and Mrs. Rowe's in Staunton, VA. Both are just off of I-81 and are reviewed by the Sterns elsewhere on this site. In addition, for recommendations for places in and around Roanoke, VA check out http://www2.roanoke.com/entertainment/food/

From your feedback, it seems like I-81 will be the best route.
Thanks for help with the area and with the website for us newbies!

I just drove most of this last week and let me warn you it is a long day. I went from Memphis to Winchester Va in 14 hours and I don't drive slow. Memphis to Nashville is 3.5 to 4 hours or about 200~ miles. Winchester to Harrisburg is about 120 miles or about 2 hours.

When you get to mile marker 4 in West Virginia, wave to your right at me. My house parallels 81 about there but I'm behind a bunch of trees.

When you get to Knoxville Tn. use the bypass around it, 640? Definetely NOT 140 though. 40 thru K-town is all tore up.

Watch for cops especially around Bristol Tn and for the next several miles into Virginia. They are usually thick through there.

Flying J truck stops are always nice to me (clean facilities) and there is one East of Knoxville and if desired/needed use the one at mile marker 80 in Va. Not the one at MM 77. MM 80 is bigger and easier to get into / out of. I have no clue as to why they have 2 3 miles apart

What part of Texas are you from?

    Good luck,

    Mike

If you take 81...be sure to stop in Staunton, VA at Mrs. Rowes...or in New Market for Southern Kitchen!
    Hope you enjoy the ride...
