You're absolutely right Al. I went to the Bohemian Cafe about 14 years ago while passing through Omaha, and I wish I had time for one more meal in Omaha cause I'd go back!

When I was living in Seattle, I knew quite a few Nebraska transplants who were of Czech descent.

I know this topic is a little dormant, but I am leaving for the next part of my summer ballpark tour in ten days....and I have one foot on the plane already. Plans are firmed up for lunch in St. Louis on Wed, June 16. Dinner will likely be at Busch that night, with Ted Drewes the post-ballgame stop. The next day we fly to Des Moines and then drive to Dyersville, IA for the "Field of Dreams." I understand there is some incredible road food in Iowa, and we are sure to sample some of it. I will report back when done. Then, we have Saturday, Sunday, and Monday in Omaha for the College World Series. I know Johnny's is on the list for a return trip. If it has fallen off, I will report that, as well.

I may have to take in a minor league game at home this week, just to get ready. Think it is 2-1 beers and dogs Tuesday night!

I just finished a baseball trip through Chicago... I hit Gold Coast, Superdawg, Mr. Beef, and Billy Goat Tavern.

Billy Goat Tavern is a must for Cheeseburgers and is on Michigan Avenue. Gold Coast has many locations and serves a fine Vienna Beef Chicago Dog. I was a bit dissapointed in Superdawg, and Mr. Beef was excellent with excellent service.

I've also been on a baseball trip in KC (Kauffman is a great stadium) and hit Arthur Bryant's. One of the best BBQ sandwiches I've ever had.

The Chicago dogs in Wrigley are not as authentic as the roadfood places listed here. Have fun!

While in Seattle, you could try Uwyajamyas (Okay, it's spelled phonically, not sure of the proper spelling) near the stadium in Chinatown. It's a fun Asian Grocery Store to tour through and the have all sorts of small little restaurants towardds the back to try (Philipino, chinese, japanese, veit, etc) All really good food.

There's also a place in Pioneer Square called the Iron Horse. I haven't been there in awhile but they used to have really good burgers and beer there. All brought to your table on a model train.

Don't waste your money in the stadium! Too little food, too much price! But if you have to, the Ivar's Fish Taco is pretty good.

I ate at Johnny's last week, and the chateaubriand was as good as ever. "Melt in your Mouth" steak is hard to find, but this cut at this restaurant comes close. The cottage cheese they bring as a spread (instead of butter) is very refreshing. I even use it on the baked potato. And their house wine is reasonably priced and very good, if not a widely known vineyard.

The Roadfood gang gave me a lot of excellent suggestions when I was in Des Moines a few months back. Check out that thread in the archives.

I already got my "paperless" tickets to Chicago which is where I'll start my trip, and I'll be taking this route with the following overnight stops. Almost 100% of this trip will be interstate driving due to time restraints. Chicago-Omaha-Cheyenne-Salt Lake City-Reno-San Francisco-Portland-Seattle-Bozeman-Denver-Kansas City-Owensboro KY- Chicago.

I have quite a bit of my trip pre planned as far as where I'll stop to eat, however I am always looking for suggestions strictly on great regional food, so in other words, I'm not looking for a great burger in Portland, or good Chinese in Denver.

Specifically, I would love to know where I can get the best Hot Dog in Chicago, The Best Steak in Omaha ( I am planning on Johnny's but if there is another must try place, then I'm open to suggestions) and the best Chinese and Cioppino in San Francisco.

              Thanks again in advance!

Oh, for those who were wondering, I will be stopping at the following Ballparks.
              1. Wrigley Field- Chicago
              2. Rosenblatt Stadium- Omaha
              3. Covey Field- Salt Lake City
              4. Pac Bell Park- San Francisco
              5. PGE Park- Portland
              6. Safeco Field- Seattle
              7. Coors Field- Denver

In San Fran - House of Nan King at Kearny & Columbys. A dump that you'd walk by if you didn't know better. Always busy.

In Chicago - Hands down the best hot dog in the city is Super Dawg at Devon & Nagle. I'd fly to Chicago for a Super Dawg. I've been known to pack them on the plane to bring home to friends.

Portland is the land of great food. Both of these places are nicer and pricier than Super Dawg or House of Nanking, but you can't heat like a college student everyday. Try Wildwood on NW 21st. They use the freshest local products and it shows. The Heathman Restaurant in the Heathman Hotel at Broadway & Salmon. The chef won a James Beard award a couple of years ago.

Seattle - Ray's Boat House. Right on Puget Sound on Seaview Ave in Seattle. The best salmon in Seattle. I don't even like salmon and I liked theirs. It was a revelation. Quintencial Seattle seafood restaurant.

You can't go wrong with any of these places.

Don't forget WJ, if yer on I70 in mid-Kansas around lunch, its only a quick detour down Ninth St in Salina to the Cozy Inn [down 9th St to Iron..left then 7th is the next left north]-perfect lil burgers to keep you until ya hit the BBQ in KC...

In Omaha, another great steak place is Gorat's - where Warren Buffet eats. ALso, the whisky steak at The Drover is the best.

Welcome to Omaha and have fun!

While in Chicago, why not stick to the baseball places to eat .. Find a Kosher stand inside Wrigley Field and get a Chicago dog ... For Ballpark food it is one of the best. In the city of Chicago there is Harry Carry's which if still there has pretty decent food and a lot of photos. Why not head up to Milwaukee for if not the best smelling parking lot, then the best Stadium food out there .. A tasty Brat at Miller Park... There is nothing better than a Baseball Road Trip .. Enjoy!!!

We went to "Gorat's" saturday night, and it will not make it on to my "top 10" list. But it is obviously the strong choice of a lot of other people. Our reservation, made early in the week, was for 6:30 (so we could get to another event by 8:30), but we weren't seated until nearly 7:30. The pre meal bread basket consisted of supermarket sliced loaf bread; the salad was small chunks of iceberg; the creamy blue cheese dressing (with an unlisted additional $1.25 charge) looked and tasted like it came out of a Kraft's bottle; The sides were "choice of potato" AND "spaghetti or green beans" (potato AND pasta as sides seems weird to me); good, but not outstanding steaks. The "Spumoni" was refreshing, the wine was good and the service was attentive. The dining room was like an undecorated add-on filled with cheap wooden tables and chairs, loud an totally lacking in atmosphere.

I can't imagine going back to Gorat's when the EXCELLENT "Johnny's" at the stockyards (which IS on my "top 10" list) is only a couple of miles away. Johnny's is everything you could expect a steak house to be, in ambiance, food and every aspect of the dining experience.

I too am glad to see the Red Sox win. Thats a long time to go without getting to go to the World Series. I'm a Braves fan , but since they didn't make it, I will switch to the Red Sox for the Series. We have a friend in Iraq who is a big Red Sox fan and I sent him a Congrats e-mail this morning on his team winning.
