Need suggestions for Orlando.

I need a couple of suggestions for dinner joints. Working in the area next week. Any places that arent listed on the site that you suggest? Also something downtown or close by for breakfast.

Toojay's Deli is a regional chain with several locations in the Orlando area, with a wide variety of choices for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Their prices are reasonable and the food is quite good. They do have a location close to downtown in Colonial Market Plaza, 2400 East Colonial Drive.

You'll get a lot of advice to do a search ... but the reality is Orlando is not the epicenter of Roadfood by anyone's accounting.

    Hopefully something new will arise.

We've enjoyed these BBQ places many times over the past twenty years.

And, things change over the years; for example, my favorite family steak house since the mid-'80's (The Kissimmee Steak House) is now closed.  I had recommended it several times on previous "Orlando' threads.

It wasn't as good as it had been on my last visit there in 2010 and evidently went downhill fast thereafter.

While I wouldn't call this place "in" downtown (you would need a car, but it is close), Dixie Belle's Cafe has been a staple for LOCAL residents in Orlando for quite some time. It is far enough off of the tourist trail to attract regulars - mostly blue collar crowd - every day of the week. It is a on often stop for me when I have a red-eye arrival flight into MCO before heading home.

Travelin Man that looks like breakfast one morning for sure. Thanks. Gotta be in the tourist/convention center area for a couple of days also. A couple of touristy meals are unavoidable.

I couldn't get the link to Dixie Belle's Cafe to work at all.  No idea why, either.

Hmm...try cutting and pasting www.dixiebellescafe.com into your browser. It looks like the link re-routes to a landing page.

chickenplucker - I get it. It is almost unavoidable to go to Orlando and not eat corporate.

If you are going to be in the area near the convention center, two of the places that I like nearby - when I just have to - are Vito's Chophouse and Cafe Tu Tu Tango, and they are right next door to one another and not far from the convention center. In my opinion, the steaks at Vito's are the best in Orlando, if you are looking for something in the way of a high-end steakhouse. Cafe Tu Tu Tango is more appropriate in a group setting, as they are mostly small plates designed for sharing. The more people you bring, the wider the variety in what you order.

While Vito's is not a "chain," it is part of a restaurant group called Talk of the Town, which is usually pretty highly regarded in the Orlando area. Again, these places can be corporate and touristy, but they're among your better choices from that group of restaurants.

I will be driving. Half work/half play. Leaving there Sat AM and staying in St.Augustine. Lots of choices already looking at there. Thinking of hitting Old Spanish Sugar Mill in De Leon Springs heading out Sat morning.

Copying and pasting didn't work, either.  Grrrr.  I use a Mac, but that shouldn't be an issue. I googled it and it worked fine.  What the heck!  Anyway, thanks for the tip.

That's weird with the web site. Of course, it is weird to me because I have it on my screen and just copied and pasted the link, but I am glad you all were able to see the site...eventually.

The Old Spanish Sugar Mill is excellent. Just be prepared to wait. They have a lot of activities in the surrounding part of the park while you wait, so the time will pass relatively quickly.

The breakfast stop on Saturday is hopefully a good way to avoid the Bike Week frenzy at Daytona. Cant avoid it completely though.

Now St. Augustine I know (my sister lives there). Old Spanish Sugar Mill in DeLeon Springs is a must, as is another Roadfood recommendation, Schooner's Seafood. Not on the list but worth a visit are Ned's Southside on US-1 between St. Augustine proper and St. Augustine Shores, the Wildflower Cafe on A1A between St. Augustine Beach and Crescent Beach (especially good for breakfast) and Red Frog & McToad's, also on A1A in the Crescent Beach area. Also while in St. Augustine, I would highly recommend a splurge at The Columbia (go for lunch, the prices are lower). Although it has locations in Tampa (the original in Ybor City), Sarasota and St. Augustine, I wouldn't classify it as a chain, but a family-owned restaurant whose popularity outgrew its original location. It's actually Florida's oldest continuously operating restaurant, the Ybor City location having opened in 1905, and is hands-down the best Spanish/Cuban food I've ever eaten. Go for lunch and you'll save money (many of the same items as the dinner menu). Most dishes are priced in the $15.00-$20.00 range, some seafood items are more. As for TooJay's, it's a chain, but a Florida-only chain — you won't find it in any other state, so it's worth a visit while you're here. I'm told Orlando has a few good local places, though I'm not there enough to try them, but when it's No. 1 restaurant on Trip Advisor is a Disney venture touting $180/oz. caviar and Olive Garden is rated No. 8, you know you're in a culinary wasteland.

Keysey42. I was lucky enough to eat at The Columbia in Ybor City a few years ago. I keep promising the wife that I will take her someday. It is special. I may just have to check out the St. Augustine location.

I have eaten at the Sarasota - St. Armands Circle location of the Columbia for over 20 years and it is fantastic!  I love it for lunch and dinner (prices are less at lunch) and have always had great food!

    TooJay's is good.
Th Columbia I ate at in St. Pete was very good.

Just off I-Drive in Orlando ... the closest thing I've found to a local joint is a place called Cheers ... as I recall, I can't call it a family joint.

Roz and I had dinner at the Columbia in Celebration which is just about 4 miles south of Orlando.  I had Paella and a Cuban sandwich.  Double outstanding in a quite adult community developed by Disney.  A lot of old folks reside there and it is very very nice.  If you have never had Cuban food, I suggest this location.  You will like it.

IMHO, the burger at the Brickyard is very good, but it is not worth putting up with the nightmare that is Daytona during Bike Week, if you are not a biker.
