Need your help... Kidney Stones

Hey all,

Do any of you have any home remedies for kidney stones? Something that you guys or gals have seen that actually works? I have been battling these things since Jan of this year and am about out of my mind. One surgery under my belt for left kidney and going in on the 12th to hit the right kidney which is killing me. It feels like a LONG 8 ga needle sticking in my back while a boxer kidney punches me 24/7. I need to get to work but am in too much pain and am losing my mind! And yes, I have pain killers, but they aren't moving the stone. I need something to move this stone out of me. Right now it is heading in the wrong direction.

I'm slamming fluids, water, cider vinegar, cranberry, Gatorade, Miller Lite all per doctors orders and popping percocets. Am I missing anything?

When it is hot, you guys keep the fluids flowing, drink allot of fluids. The doc believes my 100 to 130 degree trailer is the cause of these stones along with me not drinking enough water and or Gatorade. I have never been in so much continual pain in my entire life, even worse than my last marriage!

And yes, I AM WHINING!

Mike

Why not try lithotripsy? It's non evasive way to break the stones down. Ask your doc, it's a very common way to get rid of them.

I'm scheduled to have that done on the 12th of April, just can't wait that long as I am going broke not being able to work, I can't even drive more than a few miles before the pain doubles me over.

Right now I guess you could say I am just shooting at the moon and frustrated to no end. My customers are calling wanting to know where I'm at with money ready to spend. And I can't even hook up my damn trailer.

Mike, I have been there.  I had 5 kidney stones about 25 years ago, it is a killer.  They said I probably had built them up for about 5 years.  I had to have surgery to get mine out because they were too big to pass, one looked like a whole cashew nut.  Anything that creates a dehydration, ie, lots of soda, alcohol, heat, is what causes kidney stones.  I was drinking 8 sodas a day and those were my late teen-early 20 years so I was in the bars too, never drank water.  Since then, I have been good.  Cut the soda down to one a day and drink lots of water, still have beer on occasion.  I have a brother who still gets them all the time because he still drinks a lot of soda and no water.  I was told coal miners and people in places like Florida get them a lot because of the heat.  Just make sure you drink plenty of water, people can say fluid, but water is what it is all about.  Good luck, hope you feel better soon.

You have my deepest sympathies. I had several kidney stones during the 1990s, and they were excruciating. Fortunately, I haven't had any since a lithotripsy in 2001.

I remember when I was a wee little lad and my uncle came home from a hospital stay, he showed me his stones, he carried them around in a small glass vile.

Good luck to you and I hope you recover SOON.

I appreciate you folks discussing this, and a needed reminder to drink more water.  Sometimes I don't drink any before work as a bladder control measure.  I've just done a little reading and they are saying the low fat dairy in my morning cereal is good, too.  I sure do wish you the best Mike.

    LocalNet,
When I had my kidney stone surgery (oh, the pain!) afterwards the doctor suggested two things to keep them away. For fluids, he suggested club soda instead of regular soda and water with a half lemon in it. These days I may have a six pack of club soda (or seltzer water) a day but it keeps my water intake up there.
    Good Luck!

Hey thanks guys, I appreciate the support.

    Mike

Well, here it is a week later, and I am wondering what you did TO ME????  I have had an excruciating pain in my lower right stomach for over a week, and my Other Half finally insisted I go to the doctor.  We don't HAVE a Doctor so we went to the local Emergency Room, and they took me in immediately.  It was feeling like someone had kicked me between the legs, and that pain was causing me to vomit.  They gave me a couple of shots to lessen the pain, gave me some liquids intravenously, and they ran some small tests, then an ultra sound to see if I had twisted one of my ... um ... testicles, nope, nothing there, but an extremely high white count (20,000) said there was an infection and that prompted them to send me to a specialist in Lake Havasu City (90 miles away) via Ambulance.  I don't remember much of that ride, I think I finally fell asleep (first sleep in three days) IN THE AMBULANCE and when I woke up they were putting a mask over my face.  They introduced a shunt (it's still in there) and found that I had a kidney stone that was 9mm by 7mm by almost 6mm.  I am pissing blood like I never would have believed possible, but they sent me home today, I only had to spend one night in the hospital, and I have to make an appointment for this coming week to drive all the way back to Parker (120 miles) to the Doctor's office to have this thing removed.  Actually they are telling me that they can blast it with sound and make millions of tiny stones rather than the one big one they found in me.  That should help them pass.

The pain has lessoned to the point where I don't think I am going to die during the next several days, but the doctor DID give me his "private" cell number and asked me not to give it out, he thinks I'll be OK for a few days, but to make sure I come in to have this done.

I don't think my Other Half will let me get away with NOT going back, though it may well mean another nights stay in a hospital.

Mike if you ARE still having problems, get it taken care of man.  I was so sore that at times the pain caused me to vomit, sometimes just clear fluid, other times things I had forgotten I'd eaten a few days ago came up.

I don't want to be too graphic here, but PLEASE take care of this, it could kill you of you don't, that's what all the nurses and doctors are telling me.

Sorry to hear that Photto.  If someone can tell me how to post a picture I can show you what one looks like.  I have had this stone saved since I had six of them in 1985.  They didn't  have the blasters back when I had surgery.  It is pretty big 1" long by 1/2" wide.  I have tried to copy and paste the picture from my computer, but it isn't working.  I have done that before, but I don't know why it isn't working this time.  I only have one kidney that works because the other one that had the stones has deteriorated over the years, but I am luckier than my brother in North Carolina who has Kidney Disease and is on dialysis and needs a kidney.  Kidney Disease runs in our family.

Photto, going in for surgery on the 12th, next week, been dealing with this since the first week of January, had one surgery in Feb and going in for the other kidney. And trust me I know how you feel. I spent the entire day on the couch today sleeping. Still pissing blood but not as bad as a week ago. Popping pain killers and slamming fluids. I hope you are feeling better and they get that stone down to a passable size.

Here you go Missy, this is one of the stones I passed, this was BEFORE my first surgery. It took about three days to get out of me and was not the least bit of fun.

The is the small one, they are going to break the one in my right kidney up next wed. The funny thing is, at least with me, the smaller the stones, the worse it hurts. The gravel that comes out after the surgery feels like I'm pissing glass. And the pain killers really don't do much other than decrease the pain to that of a bad tooth ache with the occasional knife in the back pain which will still double me over, they barely make it bearable. I think after 3.5 months of this my 8 cylinders are now down to 3 at best. These things have sucked the very life out of me.

I would not wish this on anyone.

Mine didn't look anything like that, it looks like a cashew nut.  This is what mine looks like, hope this works.  I saved it to an online album.  If it doesn't work clicking it, it did work for me when I copy and pasted it in the IE address.

Localnet, this morning when I got up, I found the following note, 8 1/2"X11", large letters laying across the key board.

    "IMPORTANT:
PLEASE TAKE ONE OF THESE AND NOTE THE TIME HERE:

    _:__AM

    DR. PHOTTOETTE"

I had requested that she be in charge of me taking my pills.  She DID wake me last night at midnight just as they did in the hospital, I took my pills then and will now.  And I filled in the blanks to read 5:20 AM.  She'll be VERY happy with my co-operation, I know.

Re:Need your help... Kidney Stones 2011/04/09 10:45:21 (permalink)
Localnet, that sure is interesting reading.  I'm going to have Phottoette look more into that when she gets up.  I have to look again, is this an over the counter or order on line sort of thing  (answered my own question, order on line).  And are YOU recommending this?

And here's something interesting, weird, but interesting.

Phottoette called the Doctor's office yesterday to make an appointment.  I don't think she told the person that answered who she was calling for, just that she wanted to make an appointment.  Remember, this is Doctor's orders to call and make an appointment.  I have a shunt in me, and it needs to come out after they blast these little buggers with sound to break them up.

The appointment has been made, but for MAY 4TH ?!?!?

I'm supposed to put up with this for almost another MONTH?

I told Phottoette I'd call back and see if that was correct.

On the good side, the blood seems to have lessened to the point where it all "looks" normal now, no pink in my urine, and the pain has either diminished or I am getting used to it.  It is still uncomfortable to be in one position for very long, makes no difference if I am sitting, standing or laying down, after about thirty minutes it is downright uncomfortable.  I've been faithfully taking my pills, and doing everything the Doctor has ordered, but I am getting VERY bored and want to get back to work building my cart.

Re:Need your help... Kidney Stones 2011/04/09 12:03:16 (permalink)
    Photto,

The Kidney Complete has helped, but it is pricey, way more than what I would pay. But, you know moms, she saw it and bought four bottles and had them shipped to my house. It does seem to settle down the stones and relieve a bit of the pain. Is it all in my head, I don't know. The main ingredients in this stuff are Cider Vinegar then apple and cranberry juice. Maybe something you can mix up in your own kitchen.

As far as waiting until May, tell the wife, or you, get on the phone and tell that doctor of yours you need this surgery now. There should be another lithotripsy machine somewhere in your state that you could get access to. Around here there are three machines plus a traveling one within a 50 mile radius of my house.

And I hear you on the pain. I was having a good day yesterday until I went and filled up the truck for near $100. On the way home they started moving and I was howling in pain. Said screw it and stopped by the corner store and bought some beer and went home and took a pain pill. This is a friggin nightmare.

And don't worry about me taking pain pills and swilling beer, I have been on the things for nearly two months and they now have little affect. The beer helps with the pain, and gets my water flowing, if you know what I mean.

Good luck Photto, and get on the horn to that doctor of yours, especially with that shunt in you. The last thing you need is an infection.

We looked again at the page on the website, but that isn't where we are going to go with this.  As Phottoette said, we're paying a crap load of money for the doctor, and he hasn't said anything about this or any other holistic medication.

I just tried calling the Doctor's office, they are closed until 8:30 AM Monday morning, so that will have to wait though the weekend.  I DO have his "private" cell phone if things get REALLY bad, but I don't want to abuse that YET.  I'll see if I can wait it out till Monday, then call the office again and see what that does for us.

Thank you for your information and your concern, please don't think I am lessening the information you gave, it is greatly appreciated.

I am off to bed with a pain pill, this came on rather suddenly just a few minutes ago, and i have a good book I am trying to get through.

UPDATE:  OK, I just got off the phone with the Doctor's office.  It seems on questioning Phottoette, when she made the appointment, she never mentioned that I had been in the hospital, nor that I had a shunt, nor that I was told by the Doctor that I needed "followup."  The date has been changed from May 4 to April 19.  That's just a week from tomorrow.  I think I can "last" until then.

Also, Localnet, just so you know how appreciative I am for your info on holistic remedies, Phottoette did do a big search on using them or not, and especially on this brand you recomended.

Well, it turns out that the medico's are either FOR or AGAINST these.  It seems that the opinions are pretty evenly split, even within the same hospitals.  They are either FOR these treatments or AGAINST them.  There is no way to know what's right or wrong when you look at the info she found, so just to be on the 'tightwad' (or "safe") side, I think I'll wait until I see the Doctor and see if they (the remedies) can be used as a means of preventing future occurrences.

I never meant to steal your thread, but thank you for the concern and help you have given.

Hey Photto, no sweat... That stuff was not cheap, but I would recommend the cider vinegar, it does help with the stones, and heart burn if you ever get it. I use Bragg Cider Vinegar. Its all natural and should not kill you. Just make sure you rinse with water after drinking, as vinegar will eat the enamel off of your teeth.

And good to hear they are getting you in on the 19th, I'm going in tomorrow at 10:30am for the surgery. And I cannot wait, if I could rip this kidney out with my bare hands right now I would, damn thing is killing me. Popping percs and swilling Miller Lite right now and p-ssing like a race horse. Feels like a K-Bar in my back sucking the life right out of me. I think I know how a terminal cancer patient feels right about now. This is going to take a good two months to recover from, I've put on 20 pounds and swear I have aged 20 years. God this sucks!

Photto, I hope everything goes good for you.

Well, I never got back on here yesterday and this morning it dawned on me, today is YOUR day to get this all taken care of.  I wish you the VERY BEST of every good feeling I can imagine for your surgery today, Mike.  I really mean that.

I had a few questions yesterday afternoon that I had forgotten to ask when I called in the morning, and actually got to talk to the Doctor.  He had seen the scheduling snafu and was about to call me when I called.  He moved the appointment up one more day, since he has three others on that same day, so now it'll be on the 20th, but I feel a LOT better knowing it was the Doctor that made this change.

It's very possible as I write this that you are under the knife now, so I want to be the first here to wish you well when you come back and read these threads.  You opinion has made a GREAT difference how I feel about all of this and I too am excited and looking forward to a week from tomorrow.

Rather than gain weight it seems I have lost some.  Pants that didn't fit now do.  I had my shirt tucked in for the past two days, something I haven't done in months, and Phottoette noticed immediately.  I sure hope everything else goes well for you.

And thinking of you and the percs and beer, almost (not quite) makes me wish I still drank.

    Skip,

Here is how your big day should go... And glad to hear they bumped you up.

We left the house at 10am, got to the hospital, checked in, and was in X-Ray at 10:30. Shot a picture of my kidney to locate the stone and off to pre-op... By 11:20 I was in my gown and getting the IV... At 11:35 they wheeled me back to the surgical suite... Next thing I knew I was back in recovery, waking up around 12:15... We were home around 1:15 and I was fast asleep on the couch watching the Golf Channel... Not a bad day.

Skip, I believe they got the bastard! NO PAIN! Sore as hell, like I went a round with Mike Tyson, but that will usually pass in a day or two. They gave me a collection funnel with a screen in the bottom to catch the sand and stones that will come out. They should give you one of these too. And don't be alarmed when you go to the bathroom for the first time after the surgery, there will be ALLOT of blood. I have much more than before, but I told them to turn that machine up and really do a number on that stone. I guess they listened. Right now just sore as hell, but not kidney stone sore, God it feels good!

Now maybe I can get my head out of my ass and get back to working! I have been a miserable and cranky sob since January and useless as teets on a bore. Going to rest up a bit for the next two days and get my butt in gear and go make some money.

Skip, I hope all goes well for you, and you should feel like a new man after the surgery. Just make sure they shoot the correct kidney.

    Mike

Mike, you have no idea how helpful you have been, and I want to say thank you for keeping all of us up to date.

It sure sounds like it went easy for you.

We'll chat later, I just took a pill and can't type for crap.  And I'll answer the PM also.
